Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Sennheiser RS110 Over-Ear 926MHz Wireless RF HeadphonesCustomer Review: Good but nowhere near great Summary: 3 Stars
Price being important in all ratings perspectives, I will say I paid $39.99 for these through Amazon in December of 2010. So the 3 stars is based on that pricepoint. Anywhere near the $89.95 MSRP, I would be giving this item 2 stars or less.
Pros:
1. Very good quality sound (most important of course).
2. Comfortable for long periods of use. Seemingly (I say "seemingly" because you never know until you drop them a few times; and I haven't...yet)sturdy design using thick plastic.
3. Box included both a larger size headphone plug and an RCA-to-headphone converter piece. So you are geared up right out of the box for just about any equipment hook up.
Cons:
1. Tuning knob is directly below the volume knob on the left ear. When wearing the unit, I have a hard time not turning that knob accidentally when I adjust the volume. Very small complaint there.
2. Even after experimenting with all three channel settings for the signal, I find that I still need tuning while listening, albeit fairly infrequently. This is while sitting stationary, not moving around; I will experience static and/or loss of audio with no reason. A quick twist of the tuning knob in either direction fixes this but gets annoying to do after a while.
3. Most annoying to me was a serious delay between starting playback and receiving audio. Whether using these on a PC or HTIB, there is often a good 30 seconds between, say, playing your game or Blu Ray/DVD to the headphones and the headphones picking up the source. I tested this in areas of movies I know, where I knew there was loud, obvious noise. You can play the source first or turn the headphones on first; it doesn't matter, sound from the headphones is still delayed. Like the headphones don't see the source, but do eventually--and to be fair they HAVE always recognized the source eventually. Unplugging and re-plugging the transmitter back in sometimes picks up the source instantly...other times not.
I might be able to overlook this except the noise you hear while there is no source/waiting for the source to get picked up is ear-drum cracking STATIC. So you have to turn your volume down but leave it up enough to hear when the signal comes in, every time you lose the source. Since I have to constantly start and stop my source (I use these at work in an office), this is REALLY annoying, and all but the quickest pauses seem to lose the source and require it to re-establish. If you put these things on and watch a movie/listen to an album straight through, this probably wouldn't affect you. But even one bathroom trip can lose the signal, leaving you waiting to hear the audio (while listening to that lovely static!) while your movie plays on, then you have to rewind to hear what they said while you were listening to static, etc.
My previous pair of cordless headphones was the RCA WHP141, and used them in the exact same situation on the exact same equipment. They had none of the issues detecting audio that these Sennheiser's have for me (hit play and the RCA headphones had sound within 2 seconds), and also seemed to "hold" a source for far longer; that is I could pause the source for much longer than with this pair, then hit play, and get instant playback again.
That is not to compare the sound quality of the two really but just to show that where one pair had issues, in the exact same situation, the other did not. The sound and durability of the RCA is NOWHERE near those of this pair. But frankly, I'd gladly sacrifice some of the Sennheiser sound quality to not have to deal with these issues. Oh, and the RCA set charged on the cradle--a big advantage IMO at a similar pricepoint (the RCAs are $39.99 on Amazon as of 12/8/2010).
So bottom line: Very good sound quality; but a few technical drawbacks keep me from enjoying the headphones and their sound as much as I would like. If you can live without the fancy Sennheiser name, I personally think there are better units our there for less money.
