Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Sennheiser PXC150 Active Noise Cancelling HeadphoneCustomer Review: near perfect value Summary: 4 Stars
I got these as a gift, but even so the price would have been right for me. I'm not one of those people who has to have music playing all the time, nor do I own an ipod or walk around like a self-absorbed zombie with headphones on everywhere I go. However, noise cancelling headphones can be appreciated by those who aren't interested in alternative noises, but none at all. With these headphones, no entertainment is needed to reap the benefits. You can wear them on a plane and turn them on without even plugging them into anything and get instant peace and quiet - a rare treat these days. Makes me wonder if it's possible to have a "noise cancelling room" set up in the house. Hm - Sennheiser, are you listening?
I first discovered noise cancelling headphones in the business class section of Air France. Even without turning on the music or movies, noise cancelling headphones immediately took away the surrounding noise, making the transatlantic flight much more pleasant. Sennheiser was the supplier of headphones for that plane, though a different model. These perform as well or better than the ones the airline used.
I don't know if there's any evidence to support it, but it would seem that noise cancelling headphones would aid the listener in appreciating music at lower volumes than with ordinary headphones, since one need not jack up the volume to abnormal levels just to compensate for background noise. If so, these might help prevent "ipod ear", which many young people are developing through incessant use of in-the-ear headphones.
Although the battery stick is a little bulky, these headphones aren't meant for jogging, but sitting quietly. Though made in China, German quality control is evident, as the units are well built. It would have been nice if the center headband folded, making the unit more compact and easier for travel. Even so, they are manageable and less bulky than an over-the-ears design. Great value for the money.
Customer Review: Solid Performer, somewhat bulky Summary: 4 Stars
Overall quite an excellent overall performance!
Used in on long flights and they noise-cancellation in very good. 2xAAA last for more then 20hrs, although once the red light starts blinking the performance is slightly decreased.
Used them in a car, 1.9L TDI continuous churning at 160km/h.. makes a car quiet as a Rolls or a Caddy. Once you take them off; sounds like you are in a middle of a busy machine shop. Therefore, Great automotive noise-cancellation as well. These have Audio Pass-thru so they can be used as regular headphone while in quiet environment, albeit this feature still needs the batteries to be inside even if dead. Headphones are comfortable for up to 5-6hrs continual use.
Very solid performer and the only small concerns are: bulky battery holder due to 2x batteries, battery lid lock broke but after more then 100hrs of use. Cable tangles due to too much cord and would have been nice that the in/out wires were not placed on the same end but rather on each side of the battery case. I would say bulk is the worst for these, but the noise-attenuation more then compensates for that. When the battery pack in next to a phone it pick-up interference. Trying now the Panasonic RP-HC55 to see how they compare to these.
Sound quality is excellent through the whole spectrum; Sennheiser afterall.
Use these during long-travels (>30min) and FATIQUE will not get you as bad.
Customer Review: Well worth the money Summary: 4 Stars
I'd been laboring under the impression these last few years that the whole 'noise cancelling' thing was a gimmick - then a friend thrust her Bose NC headphones on me for a trip.
I was amazed.
But at $300 the Bose units were just too pricey for me. I waited a while and bought my PXC150 with the Bose experience firmly in mind.
Comments: The tubular battery pack/control unit is a little clunky. Yes, the earcups don't envelope the whole ear, but rather sit on the ears. But the PXC150 has in my judgement 80% of the effectiveness of the Bose unit for 1/3 the cost. They work well and they are less bulky than the Bose units. They have a quality feel (as do the Bose) and it's just plain fun to put them on in a noisy restaurant, a clattering diesel, or any row higher than 24 in an MD80, and sit there like a grinning idiot flicking the on/off switch and marveling at the difference it makes.
An Ipod and decent NC headphones like the Bose or Sennheiser units can transform the business traveler's life.
Customer Review: Good quality for the price Summary: 4 Stars
I bought this pair of headphones for my birthday because i was too cheap to buy the $300 Bose headphones. I have not used these headphones in a travel environment, but I have found them useful in the home setting. The noise reduction quality is fine, though I don't find it suitable to turn it on without having some music playing, since the noise cancelling causes some pretty annoying noise on it's own.
It is good enough to cancel household noise as far as I know, and it definitely enhances the quality of my music. Despite the noise, my only other gripe with this product is that it hurts your ears after extended wear because it compresses them so powerfully. However, since I don't use it for very long stretches of time, I have no problem with it.
This is just a good buget noise reduction system that will definitely satisfy you if you don't expect the world of it. It does its job adequately and does its best to reduce the effects of its shortcomings.
Customer Review: Comfort - average, Performance - good Summary: 4 Stars
These headphones are very good at cancelling noise on an airplane, which is what I use them for.
I found the earpads to be a little small and the plastic headband to be uncomfortable. The plastic headband is flat on top instead of curved, which is strange. I would not recommend these headphones for anyone with a large head!
The other feature which is kind of annoying is that the on/off switch for the noise cancelling is inline on the wire. It's a tangled mess when I take is out of the case no matter how carefully I put it away.
My friend bought some noise cancelling headphones from Radio Shack with the battery and switch in the plastic headband, which is much more convenient. The earpads are larger and more comfortable too. The noise cancelling is good, although not as good as these. You may want to try the Radio Shack headphones first, as they are not as expensive.
