Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Sennheiser PXC 350 Active Noise Cancellation Headphone with Vol Control (Black)

Customer Review: great at reducing low-frequency noise
Summary: 4 Stars

First off, I can't compare these to any other active noise-canceling product, since I've never tried another. I have tried various passive noise-canceling products, like foam ear plugs and shooting-range ear muffs.

As compared with my Peltor Ultimate-10 earmuffs (which have a passive NRR of 30 dB), I was pleasantly surprised the Sennheiser PXC 350's are better at reducing low-frequency noise. In fact, the main reason for my purchase of these was my annoyance at the noise of the air-conditioning/heat-pump units located outside my apartment, directly adjacent to my living room. My Peltor earmuffs are quite formidable at blocking out noise, but they fail to block out the low humming from these units. The Sennheiser headphones don't block the noise out entirely, but minimize its effect to an almost unnoticeable level. So I imagine they would minimize the humming of airplane engines quite well too, though I haven't tested this.

However, do not expect them to minimize all kinds of noises equally. It seemed to me that higher-frequency noise wasn't reduced nearly as well as low-frequency noise. The Peltor earmuffs are much better than the Sennheiser headphones at minimizing mid- and higher frequency noise.

I should note that the Sennheiser headphones are so comfortable that I've often fallen asleep in bed with them on.

I found a problem similar to one described by a previous reviewer: "...the earcups on the PXC350 are quite large. This permits a very comfortable fit but this may have also contributed the noise leakage due to the earcup not completly sealing against my head. I was able to adjust them so that they were fairly snug, but after time and subtle movements, I could feel that they were not making tight contact at the bottom below my ear." My own head (and ears) are, I think, average in size. But I found that, no matter how I adjust the headset, the ear cups don't fit tightly enough around the entire ear, especially not just behind each earlobe, and especially not when I move my head to the sides, even very slightly. To maintain a great seal, I have to actually press the ear cups against my head with my hands. The Peltor earmuffs, on the other hand, have quite a tight seal on their own, even when moving my head around. It seems to me that it would have been a relatively simple matter for the Sennheiser headphones to be designed without the problems just described, though I suppose some would, in that case, have complained that the headphones fit too tightly for comfort.

With the active noise-canceling turned on, the sound-quality from the headphones is quite good. But I did notice another issue described by another reviewer: "...although you can listen to music with the noise canceling off, the sound is entirely different, and by different I mean worse imo. The sound just isn't as crisp as with NC on, though still great (just slightly muffled)." I myself would say that, with the active noise-canceling turned off, the sound is actually *much* worse - so bad that I don't think I would ever want to have to use the headphones with the noise-canceling disabled.

Overall, I'm pretty satisfied with these headphones, since I haven't found a better way to minimize low-frequency ambient noise, while also being able to enjoy music or other media.
