Customer Review: Excellent headphones for portable electronics
Summary: 5 Stars

The Koss Portapro and Sportapro have long been the most recccomended budget headphones. However, the PX100s certainly give the Koss phones a run for their money. The PX100 have the typical Sennheiser sound, with a slightly reserved bass. These phones work best on jazz and classical music and even classic rock. But those listening to bass heavy music such as rap may prefer the Koss Portapros.

These phones are extremely comfortable because of the foam cushions that rest on your ears. They are very lightweight and have a very clean response that does not fatigue the listener so they can be worn for hours at a time. They also fold down nicely and fit into a case only slightly larger than those used for sunglasses for carrying around. These are therefore ideal phones for the home or office where there is a quiet environment.

One of the reviewers gave these phones a bad review because they don't block out outside sounds, but they are not designed with that in mind! If you want to block out outside sounds because you are using the phones in a noisy environment, then look at the PX100's siblings such as the PX200 or PX250, or in the ear canalphones such as those made by Shure, Etymotic and Ultimate Ears.

The PX200 uses cushions to isolate external sounds. The PX250 go a step further and use active noise cancellation, in which a small microphone samples outside noise and creates a signal 180 degrees out of phase to cancel the noise. The PX200 and PX250 are designed for use in noisy environments, while the PX100s are not.

In summary, these are an excellent set of headphones for use in quiet environments; don't expect them to block out any outside noise and you won't be disappointed. These are an outstanding value made by one of the top manufacturers of headphones. However, if you want phones for use in the subway or on an airplane, look for active noise cancellation such as the PX250 or canalphones.

Customer Review: Perfect for everyday useage and more!
Summary: 5 Stars

I bought an mp3 player and needed more comfy headphones than the supplied buds. After researching and visiting enthusiast forums I heard about the px100's and I bought them here (marketplace). They are delish in their sound quality.

Comfort- They are so light and airy I feel like there is nothing on my head. My ears also don't get hot after hours of wearing them (it's summer)

Sound- I didn't expect the quality of bass from these phones.I can hear the reverberation of the bass drum, and very low sounds clearly. Throughout the range of volume the sound stays balanced- the bass doesn't drown out voices and at high volumes the high end doesn't make you cringe. You can turn it way up and it doesn't sound harsh or grating and hurt your ears, it really does just sound louder. You can hear surroundings, which is good for me since i can have it at a lower volume and be able to talk to people and it's not a problem. But if I don't want to hear sounds around me I can comfortably turn it up and drown it out (that's a good thing for me). The open-style is what keeps the sounds so warm and realistic. I'm hearing little sounds in songs I'm not used to. Walking I'm often faked out by voices.

style- Okay, so I'm wearing these in public. And the other headphones suggested in this area ( sportapros portapros etc- I read all these reviews)- they're just plain old ugly to me. For everyday phones to wear while at work, school, anywhere you're seen, you need something smaller and sexier. They fold up into their little case keeping them safe in my bag or purse- I like the case but I could put them in a little pouch or something.

The cord doesn't seem flimsy, I'll just be nice to it. The cord doesn't tangle. It's not super long or super short. Also my mp3 player isn't turned up all that much louder than with my earbuds to get the same volume. I think I turn it up because it sounds so good.

Customer Review: Best headphones under $50
Summary: 5 Stars

Sennheiser does it again with value-priced headphones that still sound great in most environments!

Although I would not consider myself to be an "audiophile" I do have an ear for fine sound. I can easily say that if you're under a budget and would like to get the best quality sound out of your computer or ipod for under $50, this is your ticket.

Sennheiser's open-backed headphones terminate to an 1/8" (mini) plug and include a very handy and protective carrying case. If you travel a lot or just want to put your headphones in your gym bag, this protective case will prevent your PX100's from any sort of reasonable impact damage. Although it takes a little practice to wind them back up in the case, it's well worth it.

The headphones themselves are very lightweight. You can barely feel them on top of your head, and the cushons located on the top keep the metal from digging into your head after prolonged use. The earpads fit comfortably on your ear, and because its light weight it stays comfortable for hours on end. Combine that with an open-backed design that allows ambient sound to come through and you've got headphones that are perfect for work.

How do they sound? FANTASTIC. There are bright and clear highs and punchy, developed lows and mids. Getting better quality sound this cheaply is just not possible. If you purchase these headphones for their quality you certainly won't be disappointed.

Although this headphone performs spectacularly in most situations, there are a few cases in which you ought to consider a closed-ear or in-ear headphone instead. The open-backed design does allow sound through, so these headphones will not perform well in areas with large amounts of noise, such as the gym or in an airplane. DO NOT turn up the volume to play over any loud ambient noise. Listening to ANY headphone at too high of a volume will damage your hearing.

Customer Review: Wish I had got the PX 200 instead
Summary: 4 Stars

I bought these to listen on my iPod. I got the white model, which was clearly marketed for the iPod.

The PX 100 don't quite have the sound quality you'd expect from a sturdy pair of cans for home, but that's okay because you're listening to them on transit or around other people and don't want big ear-muffs on your head.

But the problem is that they leak too much sound in public settings. They don't block any of the noise around you and, worse, they let out a lot of sound to annoy the people around you. I'm always reluctant to listen to music with them in my office because I know how annoying it is to hear that tiny muffled sound from someone else's headphones.

I wish I had bought the next model up instead, the PX 200,
Sennheiser PX 200W Collapsable High Performance Closed Headphones. They have better bass response and close over your ears to keep the sound in and the noise out. You may not be able to wear them comfortably for more than several hours, but for that you'll want higher-end headphones anyway. For travel, I expect the PX 200 to be perfect.

I do like the travel case for when you collapse the PX series. It's a bit of a pain to fold them up and wrap the cord, but my last pair of headphones (Sennheiser HD 202 Headphones broke because I took them everywhere and they weren't designed for that. I look forward to these PX 100s lasting a long time in their hard case. (Though, again, I wish I could look forward instead to longevity with some PX 200s.)

Fwiw, the sound on the HD 202 (cheaper) was noticeably better than these PX 100. I don't know how they compare to the PX 200 but I'd bet they're comparable.

Customer Review: 4 1/2 Head for these Phones
Summary: 4 Stars

As usual, Mr. Chell writes a wonderful review of these headphones. I, too, found the sonic quality very impressive, with excellent reproduction of lows, mids, and highs. I am a bass lover, and these did not disappoint. Music sound live and "present," yet lives up to the advertised "natural" sound.

That said, they're just a bit tight around the ears. You can adjust the over-the-head headband to loosen that, but then you lose just a little stability and comfort. However, lenghtening the headband is the most effective adjustment; it makes a substantial difference. Sennheiser should have added thicker padding under the headband, but that would have gone against the goals of foldability (works pretty well!) and light weight. I also wish they had indicated which is the forward direction, and distinguished the right from the left earpiece, but perhaps these are irrelevant.

To sum, these are great-sounding, lightweight earphones that hoop up easily to an Ipod, but not to one's laptop (at least, not my Dell). The slightly tight fit may ease after more months of use, or adjusting the headband length. Therefore, sound is a 5*, comfort is only a 4* (though heavier, the heavily-padded SONY MDR V6 is far more comfortable). At this point, I doubt I'd buy anything else in this price range--all the phones have their problems, and sound is heavily valued in this review.

Unfortunately, most of the manufacturer's at this price don't include much in the way of specs, so you spec-heads out there may want to look lover the following:

Frequency response: 15-27,000 Hz (most phones at under $40 cannot beat that)

Impedance: 32 ohms

THD (harmonic distortion): <0.1%

Transducer principle (type): Dynamic, Open

Cable length: 1.4m
