Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Sennheiser PX 100 Lightweight Collapsible HeadphonesCustomer Review: Comfortable, Portable, and Great Sounding Summary: 4 Stars
I am pleased with these headphones for many reasons, all of which have been said already. First, they are very comfortable. The cans themselves have a ball and socket type action that comfortably flexes over the ears. There is also vinyl(?) padding on the top where the band goes over the head. The two wires going to the cans could be tightened closer to the chin to keep them secured. I took these running (not jogging, hard fast running) and they stayed on comfortably without coming off. Very lightweight. When not in use, they can fold up like sunglasses and be stored in the very stylish hard carrying case it comes with. There is a marking "#1" and "#2" for which side to fold in first, and braile like dots on the left side to help you orientate them. In regards to sound quality, these are as great as headphones this size get. Sounds good out of the box, and even better after a little regular use. My only complaint is that the bass is unexpectedly strong (but warm) sometimes, and the highs could be a little sharper. No big deal though, there is an EQ on every kind of gadget, computer, stereo, car and so on. Those are the features that sold me, but these headphones lack some things, like a gold plated connector. It does look kind of flimsy for being so lightweight, but I expect that Sennheiser's renowned quality is solid yet decieving in this case. I would have also liked it to have only one wire on one side going to the headphones (less cluttered). Eventually, the foam cups will wear out and become torn with use, and it looks like it would be strange trying to replace them. They give me very slight squeeze head, but nothing like cheap headphones that come with CD players. Finally, they're not noise cancelling, and you can hear things around you, which is good or bad, depending on what you want. When loud enough, a person sitting next to you can hear the sound too. On my ipod mini, I can hear the sound audibly when I hold the headphones in my hand with the volume on maximum. Overall, I say 4.5* because it balances comfort, portability and sound quality so well. I went through many head/earphones before I found this, the best replacement for my ipod mini.
Customer Review: Good Headphones for the price you pay Summary: 4 Stars
These are good headphones for the sub $50 range. I just got them today for my iPod Photo and am listening to Beck with these on right now..very comfy. Good design and the sound they deliver is fairly decent for the price. Warm with a decent bass. However, I will not say they are the best around for audiophiles who may rather go in for Grado SR80.
I did some research before buying them. I had my fill of the Apple provided headphones with the iPod and had narrowed down to the noise-canceling Etymotic 6i, the canned Grado SR80, Sony MDRX81 and the PX100. The PX200 and 250 tho' more expensive, I read somewhere, were not any better. My usage is mainly in office or on my home treadmill. Now, I did not want to be lost into oblivion while in office with my boss shouting out instructions or at home with my wife calling out to me or my daughter crying out to play.(Yeah, you guessed it right..I do get shouted at a lot). So that eliminated the Etymotics (also the thought of something sticking into my ears for such a long time was not very comforting) I wear specs and then I thought the MDRX81's over the ear design may not be too comfortable for me either tho' I really wanted to buy these. Also, I read in a couple of places that the Sonys are not too durable. (BTW, the X81 is far better than the X51/X71 and is not a bad choice as noise-canceling headphones) The Grados?..well, tho they sound fab..everyone said so..they may make me look like a weirdo and get shouted at more. Also, I did not want to disturb my folks in office because they supposedly leak a lot of the sounds. So, it was the PX100. (These also leak but not to that extent). I did not do any more research else I was getting all confused. There are a lot of good headphones and it is upto one's budget and personal tastes. So, in short, buy these if you answer Yes to ALL of these:
1. Budget is sub-50?
2. In-ears don't sound too comforting?
3. Wear specs/weird shaped ears and can't have the over the ears MDRX81s?
4. Don't want to cancel out external noise?
5. Get shouted at fairly often?
6. Don't want to disturb the outside with too much noise leaking out of the headphones but a little wil do?
Customer Review: PX 100 is the Way to Go Summary: 5 Stars
If you're looking to buy quality headphones at a cheaper price- look no further, these little babies are certainly worth it. I bought mine two and a half years ago, and they are still lasting perfectly fine- just one single pair lasting more than TWO YEARS! That has to say something about the higher quality of Sennheiser. I know one of the reviews says that they went through 3 pairs in 18 months- must have had a run of really bad luck with defective pairs (or handled them carelessly).
I am an extremely heavy music listener. I have my headphones on A LOT. I take them everywhere with me- on road trips, on long walks, for watching movies on the computer, on the way to and from work and school, and these PX 100s have NEVER failed me. I use to go through 2 to 3 pairs a year, but not anymore. You have to use common sense and treat them well, they are only going to last as long as you take care of them. They come with a storage case, use it and they should perform fine for a long time as they have for me.
If you have never heard better sound quality in headphones and have been sticking with the cheaper $20 and less pairs, you will be in for quite a treat. And you will most likely never want to listen to the cheaper headphones again (I sure don't). I know they are not the $500 pair of studio headphones, but they are a HUGE step up from the cheapos you see people everywhere using- people who have no idea just how valuable good sound is.
I listen to a very wide range of music- from opera to metal, ethnic fusion to movie soundtracks, and R&B to even a tiny bit of country, and these headphones really improve each song I listen to- it's like they let these songs breathe much freer. I can hear aspects of songs I never even knew were there (because of listening through cheap headphones).
Don't go back to the $20 headphones, these Sennheisers are worth every penny. I'm actually very surprised that they are sold for this cheap. Once these finally stop working (I'm starting to wonder just how far into the future that will be), I will certainly come back to Sennheiser, maybe even buy another pair of PX 100s, but Sennheiser is IT.
Customer Review: Incredible headphones for the price. Summary: 5 Stars
I purchased these headphones second hand, for a small fraction of the list price. However, after having used these headphones for a few days, I've decided that I would gladly pay full price for these, if not more. Hands down, they are the best of anything I've tried in their price range. The closest comparison I could make to these, would be the Sennheiser PXC 250 Active Noise Canceling Headphones, which is pretty much the noise-canceling variant. I chose these, simply because I wanted something lightweight, and didn't want the external bodypack. I have a set of Audio-Technica ATH-ANC7 QuietPoint Active Noise-Cancelling Headphones, if I need noise-canceling. Personally, I've almost gotten to the point where I prefer headphones without the noise-canceling circuitry.
These are going to be my new carry-around headphones. Previously, I had used a pair of Bose TriPort In-Ear Headphones - Headphones ( ear-bud ) - black for portable use, with my iPod. I think the increase in sound quality is worth the small amount of extra weight to carry around. The sound is so much more "separated," when compared to a pair of earbuds. Listening to a recording from the London Philharmonic, you can easily pick out the different sections. There is a surprising amount of bass, from such small headphones, but it keeps from being too overpowering. The treble is bright, without being overly harsh. Overall, everything blends well, without being muddy at all.
I wouldn't call them studio-reference quality, but if you have a bad recording, it will definitely stand out when using these headphones. If a track has been mixed with too much bass, I've found that it distorts slightly - this is not at all a fault with these headphones.
I really can't find anything bad to say about these headphones. They're small, comfortable, and sound incredible both for their size, and their price. I would highly recommend these to anyone who wants a good, lightweight pair of headphones.
Customer Review: I have read many of the reviews here and expected a lot... Summary: 3 Stars
2.5 STARS.....I was into recording a few years back - 1992-95 and have listened to only AKG headphones. (i think they were 240's and I liked them and did not know any different)..UNTIL now.... I decided to give these phones a shot with my brand new U2 ipod (the reason I bought the U2 edition is because I like the black and red color scheme and figured it would look cooler with some matching black and/or silver headphones). I purchased these foldables along with the senn HD-202's ($19) all based on reviews. All I have to say is that as far as sound quality goes I like the 202's a lot better...
They are more comfortable by far, more meaty, and deliver much more full bass. I found the 100's kind of tinny and boosted to much in the mid range. Yes they will go loud, but the quality was not there for me. On the other hand the 100's are portable, and are small...(probably why most people buy them....) As far as the case is concerned i thought it was cool but too awkward and seems as if it would be easy to get the headphone cord stuck (possibly cut off when closing the case) I listen to my ipod at home mostly... so portability is not an issue....
I want high quality. I will say that the HD 202's are about 25% better in overall sound quality. Bass was a big factor here. The 100's bass is weak. just not there like the 202's (mabye due to the closed ear design).
Anyway, my point here is if you are looking for pure quality DO NOT GO WITH THESE HEADPHONES.
I am keeping the 202's the 100's are going back ---
I am so thrilled with the 202's that I am
now looking for another higher quality closed ear design for my ipod.
Now realizing (after trying these both) that headphones do make a HUGE diff in sound quality with the ipod. The phones that come with the ipod are junk.
*Look for a low Ohm rating when it comes to headphones for the ipod because the ipod does not have "super power to drive them" mabye 10-50 ohms??
I wonder how the Sony V600's or V6's would sound?? My quest will now continue for even better sound for my ipod.
Goodluck, rp
