Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Sennheiser PMX80 In-Ear Sport Series II Behind the Head Earphones

Customer Review: Short-lived
Summary: 1 Stars

I had high hopes for the PMX-80s being an avid runner and constantly having to have to replace my previous headphones after the left channel would go out. The sound quality was decent. However, I found I had to turn down the base using the EQ on my ipod. In addition, when sweat builds up in/around the ear canal, it can create an effect like one is listening to music under water. The snug fit can also drown out traffic and I found myself running with one earbud out while on crowded roads.

Simply put they are just not rugged enough to withstand the constant use and abuse that sports headphones need to endure. All of the stress when the cord is pulled inadvertently is placed on the left earbud/ driver. Therefore, if the cord gets snagged on anything, say goodbye to the left channel.

For almost $50, I expected a better made product. My previous set of headphones was the Sony Mdr-As20J Active Style Headphones with Soft Loop Hangers (Black). I had the same problem of having the left channel go out, but for $15 I'm more inclined to just buy 3 pairs of these for the same price.

Customer Review: It'll do for now

Well, first the good news: as advertised, it has not shorted out from sweat during a workout yet (I've destroyed a couple of sets of Apple iPod earbuds this way, so this is a big deal to me). The nominal sound quality is pretty good, and the comfort is pretty good as well; the sound and comfort are good either with or without the foam covers for the earphones.

The one big flaw with these earphones is that they make an extremely good seal in my ear. This means that sweat collects in my ears as I work out. This is a comfort issue, but it's also a sound quality issue: as the workout progresses and I sweat, the sound quality gets poorer and the frequency response shifts (in some cases I also get a bit of an echo or reverb effect). It's tolerable for me, but I only run for about 35 minutes at a time; after that I can dry off the headphones and dry out my ears, and then I can do the rest of my workout with reasonable sound quality. Also, this means that when I am sweaty, the sound quality will vary as I move my head around, since moving my head changes where the sweat runs; so if I bend over for a minute the sound will change, and when I straighten up it will change back.

Customer Review: Great workout earphones.

Tried the original iPod earbuds at the gym--but my sweat would cut-off the right one and they fell out. Bought a pair of JVC Marshmallows, and they fell out and cut-off on the right side when I sweat.

Decided to try the Sennheiser because they are water resistant and over-the-ear. Couldn't be happier at this point. They are very comfortable and never feel loose or pinch. I have a larger head, and was a little worried about some of the other reviews, but I have worn them a couple hours with no issues. When I put a towel around my neck, it can move them around a little but its never uncomfortable and I don't loose the music. I actually prefer the one piece design--makes them easier to put on, and I can drop them around my neck to talk. The sound is better than my first two pair, and they don't cut off. As for durability, I have only used these a month so its too early to judge.

This design doesn't isolate outside noise much, which is good if you are running. You can still have a conversation, or hear some noises around you(if the music isn't too loud). I still use the iPod or JVC earbuds under mufflers when I mow.

Customer Review: Much better than the sony or motorola...

I've gone through quite a few different headsets: the bluetooth motorola s9, the Sony 50G, some from bluetrek, and a variety of earbuds, earclips, etc. These are by far the best headphones around for running and general workouts--they are light, they stay in place regardless of how sweaty you get, they sound great, and they are easy to store. Plus, you just can't beat the price.

The Sonys sure seemed like they'd work well--but after 30 minutes of sweating they'd pop out of my ear. Dry, they work great--sweaty, they slide out the same way every other earbud does and the flimsy behind the neck band doesn't do much to keep them in place--great sound though. While the motorola and bluetrek stayed in place, they were both heavy and syncing was, at times, a pain, as was battery life. I don't know how many recharges they each take, but both sets lasted under 3 months for me before the battery life dwindled to under a 1/2 hour.

I kickbox, do punching bag workouts, aerobics, p90x...and these stick with me regardless--they don't pop out, they don't make my ears tired, and they don't feel heavy. Very glad I purchased them.

Customer Review: One regret...

If I had waited another month, I would have gotten them at nearly half price! Today when I checked the price, they were $32.49 - I paid nearly double that ($59.99). But they are definitely worth it!

These headphones provide much better sound than the average headphones. They stay comfortably in your ears no matter what you're doing (I've never worn them for more than an hour straight, mind you). They look pretty cool in my opinion, and come with a handy clip to prevent the cord from getting in your way while working out.

The only suggestion I might have for improvement is a retractable cord that you can adjust depending on whether you have your mp3 player/iPod in your pocket, on an armband, or elsewhere. I run the cord under my shirt so that it doesn't dangle around and possibly get caught on anything. Still, that would not be a problem at all if the cord were retractable. But I suppose the retraction device would add weight and maybe a little bulkiness to the headphones.

Nevertheless, this is a comfortable headphone set that is ideal for running! At the current price, they are a steal, for sure!
