Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Sennheiser PMX80 In-Ear Sport Series II Behind the Head Earphones

Customer Review: Honestly good
Summary: 4 Stars

They are my first Sennheiser headphones and first sport headphones at that, previous to ackquiring these i used regular ear buds... i was used to spending 10-20 dollars on the ear buds and they would usually last a few months.... but i don't know if it was from the sweat exposure/physical stress during workouts or why they would either stop working or fall apart.... i bought i think 4 different earphones in 2010...i just figured i'd ask santa( by giving him my credit card) to get me these.... i was a bit unsure at first but i thought i'll take a chance and spend more upfront in attempt to save money.... after a long 13 days of waiting i finnaly got them yesterday.... the past 2 days i have been wearing them nonstop! The sound is good on 2 levels : 1 i am able to listen to music louder than previously with the cheaper brands, and 2 the sounds distortion level is much less. It does have a nice overall design , even if i am not the fan of bright outlines... The comfort is the only thing i would make sure people are aware off.... After about 30 minutes my ears tend to get a bit uncomfortable... but when you are working out at an intense level it really doesn't matter because within seconds you forget about it and just get used to it... from some other reviews i read i was aware of the possible problem of discomfort, but all the other benefits like water resistance seemed to just be too good to pass up. overall i would say 4 stars and above average... a should buy for anyone who likes music to get through a tough workout

Customer Review: Simply the Best
Summary: 5 Stars

Finding a good set of earphones for exercise has, until now, been a challenge for most people. Ear buds tend to jar loose when you're running or doing aerobics, and with over-the-head tension earphones, it's too easy to hook the cable on a weight machine and pull them off. Moreover, the sound quality of both typically leaves many dissatisfied.

I have a set of Sennheiser headphones that I've used for years, but, of course, they aren't designed for use during exercise. I bought them because of the Sennheiser reputation for sound quality, and I wasn't disappointed. So when the Sennheiser PMX80 came out, I didn't hesitate to purchase a pair.

I've been using the PMX80s for more than a month now, and I can say without reservation that they are simply the best. The behind-the-head design provides superior stability. Also, unlike many other brands, Sennheiser provides a cable that is long enough to allow placing my iPod wherever I want. The tension is good, ensuring that nothing short of a major collision will pull the earphones loose. Even so, they are comfortable. My workouts run about two hours, and I never experience any discomfort. As for sound quality, fantastic. The size of earbuds and earphones makes it hard for most sets to produce satisfying bass, and the result is often tinny output. Not so with the PMX80s. The bass is full and rich without diminishing the mid-range and treble frequencies.

I'm not easy to please, but I give the PMX80s my highest recommendation.

Customer Review: Great Running Headphones!
Summary: 4 Stars

Ok so first to get the only slight negative out of the way. I wish these headphones had a little more bass. I went from the Bose earbuds to these headphones and I'm really missing the sound quality.

Why'd I switch? Although the Bose earbuds have great sound, they're pricey and the cords are NOT sweatproof. After several months of use and even carefully making sure to wipe off sweat after each run, the Bose earbud cords started cracking. Even though the Bose earbuds did a decent job of staying in my ears during my run, every so often I'd have to give it a little nudge back in to make sure they didn't fall out.

So after a few weeks of using these new headphones, I'd say I'm quite pleased with them. Initially, if your head is a little bigger, they can start hurting your ears a little after prolonged use. But I started "stretching" them out a little by just pulling the band open and holding it for awhile. After about a week of doing this after each run, it no longer feels like the headphones are putting too much pressure on my ears. After adjusting to the sound quality, you'll quickly realize it's perfectly fine. The unit is also very light so you practically feel no extra weight while running. Also, as many other users have commented, these stay in your ear very securely.

So far, the durability is great. I plan to update this review in the future if for some reason this does not remain true. But overall currently, I am very very pleased with these headphones!

Customer Review: Lasted Less Than 30 Days
Summary: 2 Stars

About a month ago, I got a little tired of my Sony behind the neck earphones popping out of my ears. They served well for over 8 months of hard use, but I wanted a more snug fit.

After lots of research, I decided on another pair of behind-the-neck headphones: the PMX80 SPort Series II from Sennheiser. The brand name was familiar from our wireless mics at work, so I assumed high quality. I liked that the ear units were waterproof (you can rinse them under water), and that other users found the fit to be snug.

On my first run, I found the plastic on the frame to be sharp and uncomfortable, but got used to it because I liked how they fit snugly in my ears. The fidelity was fine, with more bass response than the Sony set they replaced, but nothing fantastic.

A couple of weeks later, the downside of the fit became clear. At the risk of being gross, on longer runs, my ears filled with sweat causing a distracting thumping noise.

Then this week, after less than a month of use at about 25 miles/wk the cord developed a short near the plug. The sound began cutting in and out with every stride -- a major bummer. I almost went on the Apple boards to find out what was wrong with my iPhone 4 before testing the phones on another iPod.

Anything marketed as "sport" phones should last much better than these. On the upside, Amazon is sending a replacement pair right out. Glad this problem didn't show up a week later or I would be out of the replacement period.

Customer Review: Great Sport Headphones for Working Out
Summary: 5 Stars

These are great headphones for working out and outdoor activity. I use these daily for running and have also used them while snow skiing, weightlifting, lawnmowing, and hiking.

If you are looking for excellent sound quality, then go explore Bose and Shure Earphones. The Sennheiser PMX80 headphones are intended for sports and activity. The sound is good/solid but not excellent, probably due to making them water resistant. It is not quite noise cancelling, but just enough to get you focused on your workout.

I used the original bright green PMX70 regularly for 5 years before accidently washing them in a load of laundry. Oops! Unfortunately, they didn't fare too well immersed in water for 30 minutes.

I just recently upgraded to the orange sibling. Compared with the 70 series, this is built slightly better. The plastic used is durable and better balanced, fit is improved, sound quality is enhanced, and the added shirt clip is helpful.

Pro - good sound for a rugged sports headphone
Pro - durable, lightweight, comfortable, stays in place, fits securely
Pro - good construction, one piece wraps around back of head, single long cord with shirt clip
Pro - sweat, rain, and water resistant and can be washed under tap water

Con - Can become uncomfortable after a long period of time
Con - Excessive sweat can sometimes hinder sound
Con - Does not compare in sound quality to Bose and Shure Earphones
