Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Sennheiser PMX 70 Sport Earbud Line Stereo Neckband HeadphoneCustomer Review: The standard for excercise headphones Summary: 5 Stars
Pros:
- THEY STAY PUT
- Good sound
- Good build quality
Cons:
- Cord is WAY to long
- not comfortable for long periods of time
I run regularly and do high-intensity workouts (CrossFit) and wanted dedicated headphones for these activities. For my purposes these fit the bill perfectly.
For starters, these will not fall out of your ears. Period. These are the only headphones I've tried that I can say this about. I've tried 4 different types of workout headphones and these are the best at staying put. (I've tried the in-ear type, the earbud type, ones with metal hangers that hook around your ear, ones with rubber hangers that wrap around your whole ear...)
Sound and build quality are what you expect from Sennheiser. These feel like a pair of $60+ headphones. Also, the label in the back doubles as a reflector, a nice touch.
The negatives aren't that big, for instance, the cord on this thing is WAY too long - I have it coiled up under my arm band. Also, if I wear these for a few hours the pressure they create on my ears becomes annoying. However, this is less and less the longer I have them.
As a side note, something to be aware of more than a negative: when you are doing exercises on your back you need to keep your head straight or cocked back. If you put your chin to your chest with your head still on the ground then the band that goes around your neck may push against the floor/bench and they could pop out of your ears. While I'm aware of this, it hasn't even been an issue for me and I do a decent amount of floor and bench work.
I love these headphones, I look forward to putting them on before my workouts!
Customer Review: excellent jogging headphones Summary: 4 Stars
Before purchasing these headphones, I read some of the reviews and remember seeing something negative about the cord retaining a coiled orientation. I didn't think anything about it at the time, but now that I've broken mine out of the box; it came back at me. Here's a solution to the coil, if you have this problem:
Hang the headphones somewhere with plug end up, so that the headset pulls cord straight. Next get a blow dryer and go up/down over the entire length of the cord (may need to repeat this). Let the cord cool while still hanging and the coils should be a thing of the past.
Thinking about this condition, I suspect the product may have been manufactured and packed so quickly the cord cooled in the packed/coiled position. Sometimes fast is not always a good thing.
About the headphones, they sound awesome compared to the cheap $12 Sony over-the-ear headset they replace. I was dissatisfied with the sound quality of the Sony, but wanted a headset specifically for jogging (earbuds headsets just keep falling out). This headset fits well, doesn't fall out and sounds great. Since my jogs are under an hour, the tight fit I read about in other reviews shouldn't be an issue.
*** additional comment ***
After a little over 3 months of light use the clip internal spring broke rendering the clip useless. This was commented on in another review here on Amazon; I'm guessing low quality raw materials and lack of quality control in China.
Doing a 'McGyver', I replaced the broken spring with a lighter-weight spring that fit on the metal dowel holding the two clip pieces together. Back in business again; the clip is a very nice feature of this headset.
Customer Review: A little flimsy, but great quality for the money Summary: 4 Stars
I recently purchased the Monster Turbine High Performance In-Ear Speakers from Amazon, and while they are absolutely superb when it comes to audio quality, I found them unsuitable for use while running since they kept slipping out of my ears. Plus, being so expensive, I did not feel so comfortable running with them for the fear of invariably tugging at the cord. Hence, my search for sports earphones began and I bought the Sennheiser PMX70. The reason I went with this choice was Sennheiser's reputation and the great reviews for the product on Amazon.
I have used the product for about 3 days now, and its been 20 bucks very well spent. While the construction seems a little flimsy (which automatically makes you handle it delicately), the sound quality is great for the price I paid. It obviously sounds nothing like my Monster Turbine High Performance In-Ear Speakers, and neither did I expect it to.
The sound is crystal clear without any disturbances. I have not crossed the 80% mark of volume on my iPod because that has been enough for me. Bass is moderately thumpy, somewhere around 3.5/5, but the lack of distortion is a big plus. Mids and highs are nicely reproduced. Sits comfortably on the ears, wraps around the neck. Stays in place while I run, which is the primary purpose of the earphones for me. The green color is actually very nice looking. Does not look overly gaudy at all.
I would highly recommend this to anyone who's looking for sports earphones. They are amazing value for money.
Customer Review: A Sweaty Runner's Dream....No Joke!!! Summary: 5 Stars
I am a runner. But to say I am a runner who sweats profusely would be a gross understatement. To give the reader the scope of my "sweat condition" - The only reason why I would even venture near a treadmill(and have had to do so of late)is when outside temperatures reach levels where I am unable to replenish my fluids at the rate which it is being lost. So this brings me to the headphones. Every so often a product comes along that fulfills a yearning that you have pretty much given up on. I have tried every headphone out there - you name it! One thing always happens after a few drops of sweat roll down to my ears - they fall out!! I had stopped running with head phones, and completely given up all hope of ever being able to so again, until I put on the Sennheiser PMX70 Sport Line Stereo Neckband Headphones. Two, three, four miles later, the headphones remained in place, with no change in the sound quality. Simply AMAZING. You know, one thought comes to mind as I type these words: You can say what ever you want about the Germans, but what no one can dispute is their ability to deliver quality products. I was so blown away by the quality of this product that I went looking to see if the company is publicly traded - Private, unfortunately.
In terms of the complaints other reviewers have with regards to the pain -- it was non-existent for me. I have small to medium size ears, so that could be a reason why I didn't experience any pain. And even if I did, it would be no problem whatsoever bearing the pain until my ears got use to the headphones. I am very pleased.
Customer Review: Best headphones I have used for running. Summary: 5 Stars
I have been cycling through different kinds of headphones for working out, especially running, not finding something I really liked. iPod earbuds, Shure earbuds, Sennheiser PX200s closed headphones, and a few others not worth mentioning. I tend to have very small ear canals so, even using the smallest inserts, buds never work and slide out. Same with the iPod's included ear buds, they always fall out. Regular headphones tend to slide around as I work out and can be difficult to keep in place.
The PMX70s were exactly what I was looking for. They stay in place without any fuss and are water resistant. I haven't had the complaints of some others about them being uncomfortable, in fact I forget they are there.
Perfect sound quality isn't really what I am looking for workout earphones and I do find them to be a bit tinny, but otherwise quite good. Bass is adequate and they have more than enough volume using an iPod Nano at 3/4 volume while running outside in the wind. They aren't anywhere close on sound quality as compared to my Shures but they are just a fraction of the price. They do sound better than iPod earbuds obviously.
Another advantage is that since they don't seal the ear canal you don't hear the little things like the swinging of the cable or your own body's sounds. A definite advantage over in the ear buds while running.
The cable is a little long for my tastes, I wouldn't mind it being about 6" shorter, but it's about average on length. I do very much like how the cable only comes off one side of the headphones, another big plus for workout headphones.
Highly recommended, especially for the price.
