Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Sennheiser PMX 70 Sport Earbud Line Stereo Neckband HeadphoneCustomer Review: Great for Runners Summary: 5 Stars
These are the best headphones I've tried for running any distance. I've run a half-marathon with these on and they stayed in place. Also, when doing speedwork (running), they don't bounce. I've worn them while doing crunches and other core work. I've worn them while lifting weights.
If you're like me and you sweat a lot while working out, you can't wear in-ear or the twist-to-fit types because they just don't stay in or your sweat gets between the ear plug and your ear.
The PMX70 headphones are different. They stay in place. And if you are doing an intense workout (causing you to sweat profusely), you can actually scoot the ear pieces back just a little bit (out of the ear canal) without sound degradation and without having sweat trapped between the earpiece and your ear canal. Even when I do this the ear pieces stay in place. The headphones have just the right amount of tension to keep them in place while you barely notice them.
If you're not fmmiliar with the fit of this type of headphone it takes a couple of days to get used to.
They are water resistant to the point where when I get done sweating all over them, I can clean them by rinsing them off in the sink. I usually put them by a fan or a heat vent afterward to dry them and they're ready to go the next time I need them.
The sound is great. They reach the full frequency range of human hearing, so no frequencies are cut out of your music. They are easy to hear in busy city traffic during ice storms as well as in the middle of the health club with 40 treadmills running on all sides of you (I'm sure a little of this is dependent on your MP3 player too - I use a little zen stone).
I've owned these for over two years. They've run a few thousand miles with me. Needless to say, they are well made and extremely durable.
I would recommend these to anyone serious about running that would like a pair of headphones that are completely functional in this capacity.
Customer Review: Great for exercising with.... Summary: 5 Stars
Really great headphones, especially when you go jogging or any other type of exercise as these seem to be the only headphones that I have ever purchased that actually stay on your ears when causing great physical moment. For example, the other week I was hit by a double-decker bus whilst jogging and they still stayed on! Even the paramedics were amazed...
Seriously, great headphones. Even the lime colour grows on you and gives the brand a unique quality (like the original i-pod white headphones). I suppose there is a practicality to the colour, for example they stand out and may give warning to others that your hearing maybe impaired to due to listening to music. Or maybe the designers were on mind-bending drugs, who knows?
The wire is long enough to make it comfortable when jogging, and the wire is also great as it is very good at remaining slack and doesn't hardly 'curl' up.
The sound is great, with good bass - which isn't normally good in regards to in the ear headphones. But the sound can only be great if you have a good mp3 player, CD player to go with it (and vise versa).
Two problems I have encountered, first they do hurt the ol' ears a bit after a while but I have never had a pair of inside the ear earphones (and I have had loads) that DO NOT ache/hurt after a while. But this problem only depends on when you were them. If you wear them for exercising, then an hour or so is probably the average time you spend wearing them.
Secondly, the ones I purchased seem to have a slight static/hiss problem from the connector to the mp3 that becomes obvious when the wire near the connector moves, but I think it was just a one off problem with mine, and it really isnt THAT noticable, but it is there.
All in all, a great set of headphones, Sennheiser always seem to be above more famous brands when it comes to quailty and comfort. I bought these after buying a set of Sennheiser ear muff type headphones for my PC, and the sound was amazing.
Customer Review: Good, not great. Summary: 4 Stars
I do like these headphones a lot, they are not perfect, I doubt there is a perfect pair. I use them for running, stationary cycling, and gym workouts. They are the best headphones I have used for these purposes.
Other headphones I have tried include:
-Sony sport head band (over the top) with forward facing buds like this model
-Sony sport over the ear - ear buds
-Philips neckband headphones rests on the ear (no bud, just a padded speaker)
-Philips over the ear - ear buds
-Apple iPod ear buds with and without the foam covers
I always have a problem with buds falling out, so I need a headband or neck band to keep things more stable. The Sony with a headband never felt comfortable and often slipped out anyway. The Philips were simply too heavy and were uncomfortable after a short period of time.
Pros of the Sennheiser PMX70:
-Comfortable neckband that holds on the head near the ears (I have a smaller head, this may be uncomfortable if you have a larger head)
-Good sound quality. I use these at the gym where there is a lot of noise, so it is good enough. I'm not really listening anyway.
-Stays in my ears where I can hear them all the time.
-Can be use running, cycling, or with weights (benches, free weights, machines) with out any problems.
-Rinse them off in the sink after a sweaty workout.
Cons of the Sennheiser PMX70:
-Not adjustable - my ears are slightly different shapes, so it sits differently in my left ear and does not sound as loud.
-Sweat runs off my head, down to the ear bud and in my ear. At this point it sounds like I'm in a swimming pool. I use a towel or my shirt, dry the bud and my ear off, and continue with my workout. This happens maybe 1 out of 4 workouts, and is a problem I have will all ear buds.
Overall, this is the best solution I have found for decent sound, comfortable fit and few problems with a set of headphones for working out.
Customer Review: Good for running Summary: 4 Stars
These headphones are just fine for the average runner.
Sound quality: Lows are great but highs are definitely missing. For $20 you get what you pay for here.
Fit: They do put a bit of pressure on the ears, but after a few runs, I have forgotten about them.
Cord: It coils - I didn't get this from the pics and reviews, but it is almost like a telephone cord, but with much larger loops - this keeps the cord from bouncing all over the place - a great feature!
Ambient Sound: These do occlude the ears more than other out-of-the-ear headsets so you do miss some ambient "traffic sounds". I guess this is good or bad depending on how badly you want to hear cars before they hit you...
Quality: So far, so good (two weeks ownership). Feel well made and solid.
I gave them 4 mainly because I couldn't justify a 5 with the sound quality. However, you are getting what you pay for - frankly this is a very good value - I bet you would have to pay 10 bucks more from another brand to get the same audio quality. I also bet if you spend another 10 bucks for the next model up you'll get the highs that these are missing.
--UPDATE-- I've loved these headphones for 2 years, but they finally bit the dust. One ear failed. On the one hand, I got two years of heavy, sweaty, rainy use out of them. On the other hand, I've had a few other headphones that lasted much longer through similar abuse. I pulled apart the headphones in a last ditch effort save them. The speaker housing was caked with corrosion and perhaps... 2 years of dried sweat and ear wax! The culprit was a hair-thin copper wire between the main line and the coil (irreparable because I had pulled apart the diaphragm to get to it). Now, while it seems like 2 years of use isn't bad, I could clearly see how the housing was very "open" to the elements. Perhaps if Sennheiser had used some rubber or otherwise sealed off the speaker compartment, these would still be working.
Customer Review: Great headphones for running. Summary: 4 Stars
I've been using Sennheiser headphones for many hears. So when I bought an iPod Shuffle to use when running I looked to Sennheiser for headphones that would sound great and stay put.
I settled on the PMX70 due to the behind the head band design and their reputation for great sound range. I was a little concerned when I read some of the reviews about these being uncomfortable, or causing pain. But there were numerous reviews that said they worked great for them. So I decided to give them a try and if I didn't like them I'd return them.
I am very happy with the headphones. The sound quality is much better than the earbuds that come with the ipods. Also they stay put when I run. I was concerned about sweating and so far it doesn't interfere with the headphones or at least hasn't hindered their performance. They don't get in the way of my sunglasses either. That was a concern for standard over the head style headphones. The headphones let in ambient sound which is good. I haven't been caught by surprise by not hearing sounds around me. I consider myself to have an average size head, these fit me well and do not pinch my ears or cause pain at all.
The only cons I can think of would be that the design wouldn't work for everyone. Although I can appreciate some of the reviews where the fit was not so good. All I can say to that is make sure you ask about the return policy when you purchase these. The bass response is a function of fit, a better fit means better bass with most Sennheiser headphones. I also have a pair of Sennheiser PX100W Supra-Aural Foldable Mini Headphones (White) which also require proper fit to get the best sound. Besides these cons the only other con is the cord, which is wrapped around a plastic insert when it is manufactured and shipped. This causes it to coil up. This isn't too much of a problem as I run the cord through my T shirt and tuck the excess into the waistband of my shorts.
