Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Sennheiser PMX 70 Sport Earbud Line Stereo Neckband HeadphoneCustomer Review: Best sport headphones I've owned Summary: 5 Stars
Note - This model has been replaced by the Sennheiser PMX80 Sport Series II Behind the Head Ear Phones For Sports.
I am a runner. I go through headphones almost as quickly as I go through shoes. About 3-4 pairs a year used to be average for me. When I originally purchased these headphones, on June 26, 2007, the price was almost $50. That sounded absurd for headphones that would probably die in 3 months, but I took a chance on them based on the reviews here. I was sick of running with crummy headphones that hurt my ears, died too quickly, and didn't fit right. I decided I wouldn't write a review on these until they died, and 20 months later, it is finally that time.
First, I am not an audiophile. I did not buy these for sound quality, even though I know Sennheiser is one of the most respected headphone companies around. I needed something I could run with, and as far as the sound goes, these are just fine. Bass sounds great and is not too loud, and the treble sounds just fine. Out of past headphones, they probably sound the best because they fit best in my ear. They don't completely block out outside noise, but they do a good job of it. That could be good or bad depending on what you're looking for. If I run with someone, I can't hear what they're saying unless I take a phone out. So if you run in areas with a lot of traffic, consider this when thinking about safety issues.
The design of these phones is excellent. My main problem with previous "sport" headphones is awful design. I don't like phones that go over the top of my head because I wear a hat. With some phones this is okay, but in the winter I wear a skull cap, and that makes anything other than this design impossible to wear. The green color looked ridiculous to me at first, but grew on me. The back of it has a reflective piece over the logo that is great for running, because other than shoes, most runners have no reflective material on their back, which is the most important area. It's small, but better than nothing. The speakers fit perfectly in my ear. My previous phones always slipped out of my ears when they got sweaty, and I was constantly pushing them back in to get better sound. The design of these makes the speakers stay in your ear, without too much pressure (so they don't hurt). They are very comfortable and I barely notice them. If I happen to cross a street or need to hear someone, I can easily pull out a speaker and just pop it down so it rests on my neck, while leaving the other one in. The speaker wire is attached to the left hand speaker, so if you use your music player on the right of your body, it's easier to let the wire run down your back then to cross your body. Letting it run down your back also keeps it completely out of the way for other activities.
The best part of these speakers is the durability. Every sport headphone I have bought in the past has claimed to be "sweat-proof" or "sweat-resistant." Eventually, after enough miles and sweating, ALL of them have succumbed to it. It is very familiar to me. After a couple hundred miles or less, the sound turns a bit tinny. Eventually, one of the phones will go, then shortly after, the other one. These headphones lasted me 923 miles before "starting" to give out; five times the distance I normally get. A couple months ago, the speaker jack started to come unglued and get loose, but I was able to push it back in and it still worked. The outside of the speakers rusted a little half a year ago but they still sounded just fine. Only recently, the sound has become a little off. But this is not because of failure from the speakers, but failure from the jack. I can fiddle with it a little and get perfect sound if I try, but ultimately, I know it's only a matter of time and probably best to upgrade to the new model.
For the price, you really can't beat the Sennheiser PMX70 as a Sport headphone.
