Customer Review: Short comparison: Sennheiser MX500 vs MX550
Summary: 4 Stars

I own the MX500, which I thought sounded pretty good out of the box, but I've always wished for just a touch more air and detail in the treble. I picked up the MX550 which is avaiable in warehouse123.com , and hoping it would basically be a slightly improved MX500.

The best way I can compare the 500 and 550 is that the 500 seems like it was voiced by the same team that designed the HD580, while the 550 sounds like it was voiced by the HD280 team. Take a 280 and cut off all bass below 60 Hz and you have a general idea of what the 550 sounds like. The 500 and 550 do not sound like they come from the same family at all.

I think I can characterize the MX550 as being on the bright side with a more forward midrange than the MX500. I personally prefer a warmer, more laid-back sound, but I can see where some people might prefer the MX550.

To me the MX500s have a great deal of value relative to their price. The MX550s also, and they seemed like about what I would like to pay for extra $20 bucks for them.

Customer Review: Disappointment!!
Summary: 1 Stars

I I was looking for a good pair of headphones for my IRiver CD Player for quite a time, as I'm usually very thorough with such stuff.I listen to a lot of drum n bass and goa trance so i needed something that would give a a good deep sound with great bass. Well, this was not what I needed as the headphones broke only after 2 weeks of use. To be excact, they just started to play very, very quietly! I commute to work, take two buses so i needed something that would eliminate all the noise from all the people on the bus, well, because of this quietness of playing I could hear everything BUT the music itself!! And then a miracle happened, the headphones started to play loud again, but with a slightly worse sound, but even that didn't last long. So I threw them away and was sorry for spending money and (what more important to me), my nerves on something bad as this. Do yourself a favor, save a bit more money and buy good, even if a bit expensive but reliable headphones. I'm myself, considering Sony for that matter.

Customer Review: great for the price
Summary: 5 Stars

I got these to use on my Zen Touch. I find the length of the cord on these to be perfect, while the one that came with the Zen Touch was a bit long, constantly got tangled, and even a little weird for its U-shaped "necklace" construction.

As the other reviewers pointed out- the sound on these are nicely balanced, and I agree. I have been able to experience all three shades (trebles, mid, and bass) without feeling that one over-powers the other.

I actually like the volume control on these. The Zen Touch actually comes with a protective pouch for its player... and leads me to have to "uncover" my player in order to change the volume when it gets too loud (and accordingly have to tolerate the loudness until I can finnagle the thing). Even though some reviewers may say that the volume control on the ear buds are redundant, I find having to handle the player in plain view to be another way to mark yourself to get mugged, and am glad I don't have to do that anymore.

Customer Review: Mixed
Summary: 3 Stars

Pro's:
handles bass well, altho it doesn't have good bass by default. (especially contrasted with the sharp higher ranges.)
highs sound very good, vocals great. larger stage, more live than my ipod 3g earbuds
volume slider (limiter) is very convenient

Cons:
smaller earbud than the ipod earbuds, which are a bit larger. (these don't stay in my ear.)
weak bass, unless you increase from your output device which it will handle well. (*fit is crucial with earbuds - if you can get a tight fit to your ear canal, which I can't, you will get much better bass)
cord is about 4-5" shorter than ipod's

Overall I would probably love these - setting my ipod to 'bass booster' gives it a very rounded live sound - but they simply are too loose in my ear, which of course is going to vary for everyone. These buds aren't a sennheiser panacia that you may be hoping for with the sennheiser name, but I think they can be much more than worth it for some people, just not me.

Customer Review: Great sounding earbuds, and a great value
Summary: 5 Stars

I've tried any number of earbuds, and these are the best I've heard by a wide margin. I think the bass is quite decent for an earbud -- but since bass response depends quite heavily on fit, I suppose some others might have a different experience. Overall, I find the MX500's sound to be clear and warm compared to other earbuds I've listened to. I disagree with the reviewer who said these are the same as the MX300. I have both and I can hear a moderate but definite difference in sound quality. On the other hand the MX300 is quite decent and at about half the price of the MX500 might be a good choice for some. It should be noted, however, that the MX400 and MX500 *are* the same, differing only in that the former doesn't have a built-in volume control.

Everybody hears headphones and earphones slightly differently, but the MX500 is consistently rated as the top value in its category in headphone chat rooms and is probably the place to start if you're looking for a pair of earbuds.
