Customer Review: best earbuds period.
Summary: 4 Stars

ive tried almost every earbud available and done a lot of research. these are probably the best ones you can buy, and they're cheap!

Highlights: There is nothing seriously wrong with them. this may sound like a silly highlight, but most cheap earphones have serious dips or peaks in frequency response that can make treble harsh, or shrill, or can make vocals sound really far away and quiet. these dont exhibit serious problems that hurt my ears or ruin the music. they are fairly neutral. well, except for the bass. the bass is detailed and punchy, it is NOT boomy or bloated. but it just doesnt go very low...

Weaknesses: the cord is about an inch too short. it constantly tugs at my ears from the ipod in my pocket. bad design. but for shorter people it might be fine (im over six feet tall). The bass doesnt go very low with these. it doesnt make music sound bad by any means, you just dont quite hear everything in the recording.

Conclusion: great for grooving to tunes on the go. But if you are an audiophile and intend to do super critical listening, these are not going to cut it. you'll have to go to a canal phone like a Shure or Etynomic.

Customer Review: Recommended to all of my friends
Summary: 5 Stars

Yeah, they are cheap, but they are good. Sennheiser has other buds which cost more, but these are my favorites (don't confuse this with the MX550. The MX500 has much better sound.)

The base and treble are well balanced, the sound level is good and the clarity is better than anything bundled with a walkman or mp3 player that I have ever purchased.

I have the B&O buds which sound a little better and don't fall out of the ears. I have bought other buds including two Sony's which were around $100, an expensive Panasonic, and the Sennheiser MX550. Only the B&O sounds better (and only a little better) than the Sennheiser MX500 and none match the value!

I also have the Sure E4C which is my best headphone purchase ever. The Sure E4C is great for travel because it isolates the music from the aircraft noise without injecting white-noise. It may save my hearing since I can enjoy the detail of the music without cranking up the volume.

I own two pair of Sennheiser MX500 so I can listen to great sounding music at home and at the office without blocking everything else I need to hear. For the money, I don't think you can go wrong with these.

Customer Review: Volume control problems
Summary: 3 Stars

I agree that these sound better than the stock iPod headphones, with a fuller sound. However, almost from day one, the volume adjustment gave me problems. Perhaps it's because I used them to run with in extreme conditions of temperature and humidity, but the control itself got messed up, so I was generally fooling with it to make sure I had a clean connection. Sort of annoying. It would cut out the highs, or a channel, or weirdly distort the music. It took me a little while to figure out what was happening. Usually sliding the control up and down vigrously, then pressing down on it, fixed the problem, but not always. The volume control produced an intermittent sound-quality problem. I couldn't understand why the control is necessary in the first place -- whatever you may plug it into has a volume control. Besides that it worked great for years. I'm switching to the MX400, no volume control.

By the way, don't do what I did and attempt to cut out the control by snipping the wires and trying to reconnect them. There are four wires total, each comprised of hair-fine individually insulated strands twisted together. Reconnection isn't going to happen.

Customer Review: This skeptic was impressed...

Wow.

I didn't really think you could get good sound out of earbud-style headphones. I mean, they're so *small* -- how could they sound good?

Well, I was pleasantly surprised by the Sennheiser MX500's. I upgraded from an older pair of same-style headphones made by Sony, and could immediately tell the difference. I was amazed at the amount of bass they could produce. But the sound isn't muddy; you can still appreciate the high treble and middle-tone sound stages.

Volume is good, too. Some of my music (mainly MP3s, but I also listen to high-bitrate Internet radio) was too much for my old headphones. They'd just crater trying to reproduce the levels. The Sennheisers work great; they deliver the levels effortlessly.

I was also initially skeptical about the price. Like I said before, I didn't think these guys could live up to the other glowing reviews people had left. Certainly they weren't *really* worth the price. But as I listen to my music for a significant portion of my workday, 5 days a week, I thought they'd be worth trying out. I'm glad I did -- I think they're worth every penny and then some.

Really appreciate your tunes? Try 'em. You'll like 'em.

Customer Review: Sennheiser Mx500
Summary: 4 Stars

I got these buds to replace the stock buds on my MP3 player and the Ipod Nano. I had read reviews about them here and they were helpful in my decision to purchase them. Although I only needed only 2 of them, I ordered 3 as the shipping with 2 was about the same cost for 3 with free shipping.
The ear buds are comfortable with the included covers and actually do sound better with the covers as well. The frequency range is very good as I was able to discern the bass lines of the music and the highs are very clear. The Midrange is somewhat recessed. This, of course is compared to listening with Sennheiser HD 600 earphones or listening to good loudspeakers. Compared to the stock ear buds however, they are so much better and the inline volume control is convenient to reduce the volume to hear some person speaking. Sound quality is reduced with the inline volume reduced so I usually maximize the volume here and reduce the volume on the player. The earbud foam covers are easy to lose so be careful about making sure they are secured on the buds and the included case is a nice feature as well.
