Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Sennheiser MX500 Lightweight In-Ear Headphone (Blue) with Carrying CaseCustomer Review: Sennheiser MX500 - Pish Summary: 1 Stars
Can't believe I need to put a star on this to say my piece. I'm not the altruistic sort that helps others make an informed choice on the basis of my own bad experiences. No, this is a rant driven by selfishness so that I can feel a little better. It starts with the ipod 30G. My rationale in choosing this system was that with 30G of memory, surely there was a method of conversion from CD format that would allow me to experience the clarity of CD in an MP3 or similar format - say apple lossless: no appreciable difference; and I've got excellent audio perception, I was off the charts with that audio test they do in school as a kid. I'm like the audiophile with neither the money nor inclination to become an obsessed toss*r. Obviously the earphones aren't gonna be the best so I figure I'd upgrade them. Sennheiser are supposed to be specialists in this field, and the guy in the HiFi shop says you'll get the best out of your ipod with the MX500. Sh*te. These are considerably worse than the ipod freebies. No bass. Tinny. Crap. Crap. Crap. I'm goin on the grail quest now for decent earphones that deliver some base. And I'm not listenin to any more reviews. Half you folk think these earphones are gods gift. Maniacs. First things first, I'm gonna beat that assistant about the head and shoulders for spinnin bullsh*t, and reclaim my £25 (cannae believe how much they charged for these). Feel marginally better now.
Customer Review: No bass, no treble, no midrange, no volume, no good - these things are junk. Summary: 1 Stars
I bought these bacause of the good reviews; I was amazed upon getting an iPod that the 'phones included with it have so little volume and so little bass. (I am especially annoyed with that, the whole 'no bass' thing; I love rock and roll and I love it loud and punchy as I ride that mountain bike). Anyways, I got these and found that they fit well in my ear, looked forward to comparing with the other phones I purchased at the same time, to test them out against the inexpensive Philips phones, the best I'd found thus far.
A horrific comparison. These phones are trash. No volume to speak of. Junky midrange, junky treble, muddy, soft bass, no bass, really; it's like listening to music under water, maybe if you have a radio on when you take a bath and then dunk your head under the water - that's how these headphones sound.
I'm sending them back for refund but even if they didn't refund the dough I'd not keep them, I'd gladly cut them up with a smile on my lips, a song in my heart.
Buy the Philips HS500 Behind-the-Head Headphones instead. They absolutely rock, great throughout the entire range, loud as can be (though I'd have them louder if I could - LOUD is best on that mountain bike), clear, thumping bass, great highs, great midrange, all clear. And nine bucks, to boot. I have tried at least twenty pair of phones, the Philips HS500 stand alone, the best.
Customer Review: Surprisingly Nice Summary: 4 Stars
I got these to go with my first flash MP3 player. The ear buds that came with the player were white and silver and looked neet but beyond that they were not worth the plastic they were made out of.
The Sennheisers were my first choice. I have owned two other pairs of Sennheiser headphones and have always been a fan. Like another reviewer I didn't see the foam pads at first and tried to use them without the pads. It doesn't work. The pads hold them in your ears and keep them in a position for great performance. The bass is just right for casual listening. I can't take them bike riding or jogging but they are great for just walking around or sitting back and enjoying the music. I can even take them on the treadmill at the gym. They work with everything from classical to techno. The volume control on the cable is an added bonus when my player is in my pocket. They are not my main listening headphones and they are not ment to be. These inexpensive buds are worth more than what I paid for them but I didn't pay very much. When I just want something to listen to I pull these out. When I want to seriously listen to music I get the big headphones out of the drawer. The kids don't like the MX-500s because they aren't white so I don't have to worry about having them stolen. The blue and black show that you are not a slave to trendyness and that you are serious about music.
Customer Review: Decent headphones... Summary: 4 Stars
I've owned these headphones for over a year now, and they're still going strong. The audio is only decent, not great, and I'm no audiophile. Probably better than the standard ipod headphones though. The build quality is very good - I've been pretty rough on them, yet they're still in very good shape. The in-built volume control is a very handy feature, though I've noticed that when put above the minimum setting, it tends to distort the sound with slight hissing in the background. Nothing terrible, but when I have a choice, I'd much rather increase the volume using my mp3 player, and not the headphones, because that doesn't cause any sound distortion. These headphones have a high max sound volume - I can't imagine anyone wanting the sound any louder than its max possible volume. I haven't tested the sound quality at very high volume settings due to not wanting to damage my ears, but I imagine, like the vast majority of other headphones, there are rather sever sound distortions at the upper sound levels. I find these headphones to be very, very comfortable, to the extent that I often forget I'm even wearing them. Overall, I think there are probably better headphones out on the market for the same price range, especially if you care a lot about sound quality, but if you value comfort, and a hardy design, these headphones are for you.
Customer Review: Great sound! Figured out how to get them to stay on. Summary: 5 Stars
OK, this is my second review for these earbuds. I deleted my first review and upgraded my rating for these earbuds, because after looking around and trying to figure out some ways to get these earbuds to stay on better, I saw that a number of other ear buds come with these wire or plastic loops attached to the earbuds. Instead of attaching a loop to the earbuds, I wondered, why not just put these MX-500's on upside down and loop the wires over and behind the ears?
And it works! I can twist my head all around now and jump up and down and these buds won't come out. I'm sure other people have already figured this out also, but then I've never seen anybody wearing earbuds upside down.
The MX-500 has that classic Sennheiser sound - a gorgeous, rich clarity in the mid-range and highs, without an excessive boost in the bass. The bass tends to be somewhat variable, and depends on how closely coupled the earbuds are to the earhole. The more tightly fitting these buds are shoved into place, the louder the bass. This is true for all earbuds that are not designed to completely seal the earhole like an earplug. The big advantage of these open earhole buds, of course, is that you don't have to deal with issues like ear wax on the sealing plug, etc.
