Customer Review: Sennheiser MX500 vs MX450 & MX550
Summary: 4 Stars

Here's my impressions of the Sennheiser MX500.
I own a Sony NW-HD3 mp3 player for quite some time now and from the beginning wanted to replace the bundled Sony earbuds with something better.
So I've bought from one to the next the following Sennheiser earbuds:1)MX350 (sucks bigtime!) 2)MX450, after burning them in I thought that they must be on of the loudest and fun to listen to pairs on the market. The high frequencies are very accurate and strong to the point that cover many times midrange response(bad thing that I realised later when bought the MX500).Midrange is from average to good though a bit harsh.Bass
is not the strong point of this pair but isn't absent as others say.Fit and wearing comfort is excellent.Quality is average compared to other Sennheiser earbuds, that was the reason that after the right driver unit died,I bought the next pair. The 3)MX550
is the MX450 with a volume control slider. After crashing that one I wanted to try the MX400 since I don't need the volume
control slider of the MX500 but it wasn't available in a store neer me,I thought of getting the hyped PX100 but did't try it
at the end cause I wanted something more descreet since I use my mp3 all the time when I move around the city.So I got the 4)MX500 it's bass and midrange response is far more accurate and warm than that on the MX450 & MX550 pairs while it's high frequencies could be described by fairly the same accuracy but not so emfasised as to the MX450 and MX550,which is a good thing cause it allows you to enjoy sounds in the low end and midrange spectrum just as good. The bass is much more present here though the difference between that on the MX450 & MX550
isn't huge as others say,it's noticable. The MX500 can't get so loud as the MX450 & MX550 due to its 32 Ohm resistance compared to 16 Ohm in MX450&550.Fit and wearing comfort is inferior to the MX450 & MX550 cause though
they have the same diameter the profile of the MX450 & MX550 is thiner thus allowing better fit.Build quality of the MX500 is much better though than that found on both MX450 & MX550.

Customer Review: unbelievably disappointing
Summary: 3 Stars

I used to own a pair of HD201s and was absolutely blown away by that product's sound isolation and bass response. I decided to buy the MX500 for my Creative 4GB Muvo MP3 player, in spite of some lukeward reviews about the bass.

What can I say? The reviewers were absolutely correct. If you're into classical or don't mind NOT having a thump in your jazz, then this pair will be ok for you. However, the bass response is genuinely terrible. Even with the horrible "bass boost" function of mp3 players, there's no noticeable bass. And I'm not a bass-hungry kind of person who wants his skull vibrating.

Here's a comparison between the MX-500 and the STOCK Creative headphones:

* VOLUME: Stock creative is much louder. On the Chicago El, I had the volume on my MP3 player up to 19/25 with the Creative, and at 22/25 for comparable volume with the MX-500s.

* BASS: Stock creative is much bassier. I never use the bass boost function or the "Rock" EQ setting and I'm happy. With the Sennheiser, even with both turned on, there was barely any bass.

* HIGH-END: This is possibly the only place where Sennheiser wins. Excellent high-end, but possibly wasted outdoors because of the lack of sheer output.

* FIT: MX-500s definitely fit easier in my ear, and the cord is a nice managable length. However, the easier fit does mean that they tend to fall out once in a while.

VERDICT: Don't buy these!! Go with the HD-201 or HD-202 if you want Sennheiser headphones. They have a LONG way to go for in-ear headphones...sadly.

Customer Review: Strange thermal properties
Summary: 4 Stars

First, I love these headphones - they sound great, they're reasonably comfortable, they have a nice, unbulky volume slider built into the cord, and the price is right.

I got them for my iPod because the silly white ones that come with it are a) an invitation to get mugged and b) crap.

But the Sennheiser earbuds are not without their faults. Actually, they really have only two faults. First, the cord is ever so slightly shorter that I would have liked. It's almost exactly as long as the distance from my pocket to my ears. I'm 5'9". If you happen to be 6'5" like my brother, these are not the headphones for you.

And the other problem, well... it's more strange and unusual than anything else. The wires in the cord react to changes in temperature VERY quickly. During the winter, I cannot walk outside to my car before having the cord solidify on me. The cord gets quite stiff at temperatures below freezing. It looks very strange when this happens because the cord stops hanging limply from your ears and sticks out away from your body. If you were planning on wearing these headphones while running during the winter, don't. The stiffness of the wires in the cold makes them fall out of your ears much more easily.

All that said, these are probably the best pair of earbuds I've ever used, and I love them despite their idiosyncracies. They'd be flawless if they had about 6" more cord length and a more thermally-sane metal used for the wires.

Customer Review: It's about time I found something.
Summary: 5 Stars

I bought a Creative Zen mp3 player a few weeks ago. Anyway, I wanted to upgrade the earbuds. This is where it all started. I first bought some Phillips white pair and a blue pair, sucked. Then I read reviews on here about the Sony everybody loves 71's and the 51's, sucked. I don't like feeling like i'm under water. try walking around or eating something with those in your ear, the outside noise was blocked,my ears still hurt. no bass, cheap cord, over priced. F sony. I go and buy the Koss Plugs, again from reviews on here, holy garbage Batman.Let me tell you those sucked the worst out of all of these. Very cheap and having to squeeze the cheap wont stay on foam, whose dumb idea was that. It took like 5 min for the foam to expand. Keep in mind here that I returned all of these, I then bought the Sony, Why not try Sony again. This time it was the Sony 828's. I have small ears and Im sure most of you do to, The round part you put in your ear, well it was the size of a Nickel, BIG and BULKY. Those I kept, only paid 8 bucks. The bass was good treble was good, again everyone raved about them. I'm going to go on my own instinct. I bought MX 500 Sennheiser. There diffrent from the one shown here. I love these headphones/ earbuds, the perfect fit, perfect bass, perfect treble, perfect cost, perfect color, if you have small ears buy some. these ones posted are the older models. get the new ones. goodluck and don't give up you will find a pair that fits you. all for the music.

Customer Review: OK, but not great
Summary: 3 Stars

After being impressed with the MX-300s, I decided to give these a try. When I opened them up and tested them out, though, I was disappointed. While they have good range, there is too much treble and not enough bass. They can even sound tinny at times. The only major difference I found between these and the MX-300s was the higher treble and the volume control on the cord. I guess for the price difference I expected more, but these just aren't worth the extra money. If you're looking for a pair of Sennheiser buds, I'd recommend going with the MX-300s. They're inexpensive and have better sound than the MX-500s, in my opinion.
I do have another complaint, and it is that the cord is way too short. When I came across these at an audio/video store, they had them in the dark blue and also in white, to match an iPod. I looked at the specs on the package, and while they were the same (as expected) the cord length was listed differently. The blue ones were stated as one meter (just over three feet), and the white ones read 1.2 meters (about four feet). I prefer a longer cord so I picked up the white pair mainly for that reason. However, these specs were incorrectly listed- the cord was actually only three feet. Now I plan on returning these, and I hope that mentioning the cord issue saves someone else the hassle.
If you need a spare set and don't mind the cord or treble these may be good, but if you want more bass, keep looking. There are better ones out there.
