Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Sennheiser HD515 Dynamic Stereo Sound Audiophile 500 Series HeadphonesCustomer Review: disappointed Summary: 3 Stars
Okay, I was hoping to upgrade from my Sennheiser HD 202 Headphones. I thought those were pretty good overall, but awesome for the price. The cord was super long, it was a comfortable headset, and sounded good.
So I thought with the big jump in price, these 515 would be better. But they're not really.
Let's start with the good points. They feel expensive. When I first saw the packaging, I was excited. A very high quality packaging. You can actually reuse the packaging the way they designed it and it even has a pseudo locking mechanism. Then I held the headphones in my hands and it feels like quality. Looks pretty good too. The cord is not as long as the 202 headphones but still long. I wish it came with a little spindle like the 202 headphones.
Now, the headphones look stylish when you're holding them but when you put them on, you actually look like Princess Leia with the buns. Really, it's ugly to wear it. My friends tease me. I have to learn to have thicker skin to wear these in a Starbucks or the school library. They're actually pretty comfortable. It's bigger than the 202 so they actually swallow up my ears better than the 202. They isolate outside noise better than the 202 so as long as I don't look at people, I can't hear them snicker.
The nice thing is there's only one cord running from the headphones. I actually like this. My 202's are starting to die because I kept on accidentally tugging on the cord. a problem with me. the cord would snag on something every day and pull on the headphones. like one day, I'd be sitting with my foot on the super long cord and then stand up which would yank the phones off my head.
Now, the default plug of the 515 is the big one so that you can plug into a nice AV receiver. the 1/8" plug is the adapter. i don't mind this setup. it's like these headphones were meant for high quality AV equipment, not your ipod.
Now the most important part. The sound. Now I wasn't expect 3X better performance (these are 3X the cost of the 202). But I really have to think about whether these sound better. I think they sound better. But it's not obvious they sound better. I don't think that's a good sign. I could have bought 3 sets of 202's for the price. And if I did it all over again, I may have bought 3 sets of 202's.
I think I like them. But it's not a slam dunk. I will actually be using the 202 spindle to bundle up the cord of the 515. for something that costs 3x as much, it could have come bundled with the same spindle. considering how much I am a klutz with headphones and earphones and how I always seem to be careless and break them, maybe it was better to buy 3 sets of the 202. maybe this isn't an indictment of the 515. maybe it's just that the 202 is such a good deal.
edit: I didn't realize this because I didn't think about it until I saw the other reviews. I did the review with the headphones on the whole time. I never had "open" headphones before and never really knew what that meant. Now I do. you can totally hear the music coming from these headphones from outside the headphones. It's as if you're putting speakers by your ears. It not only pipes out of the headphones on the side that you put your ears on, but also on the outside of the headphones. I first thought maybe it was sound leaking from the inside but I put the headphones over my leg and put a tight seal so there was no leakage and I could easily hear the sound coming out the outside of the headphones. Even if you don't turn the volume up, everyone can hear what you're hearing. Kind of freaky. And I'm not sure I want the world to know what I'm listening to all the time. so be warned! don't be playing things that you don't want other people to hear.
