Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Sennheiser HD201 Lightweight Over-Ear Binaural HeadphonesCustomer Review: Mediocre comfort Summary: 2 Stars
I am both amused and dismayed by the extremely enthusiastic reviews of this product. The statements such as "best headphones for under X dollars" where X is often 75 and 100 dollars. Those words were of course, said by people who haven't used a set of good $100 headphones.
HD201s have one big con, and that is comfort. Sennheiser skimped on the design of cushion pads. They're really thin. As a result your ears will touch the drivers' housing, which is made of hard plastic. After wearing these headphones for more than one hour, my ears start hurting very badly. The design is borderline garbage. I don't care if these headphones sound as good as $70 or $100 headphones (and for the record, they don't. I own a part of HD555s too). Given the terrible comfort, they can't be worth more than $20. You get what you pay for and that's that. If you're going to wear headphones for a long period of time, does the price difference of $20 between these and say Koss UR-40 or Koss PortaPros really matter? I'd rather wear more expensive headphones and not feel the excruciating pain in my ears.
Next issue is the cable, which is flimsiest of the long headphone cables I have seen in my life. The 10ft long cable gets always on the way. It's specially annoying if you use it with a PC or anywhere where your source is close. The cable will be on your laps, on the floor, it will be stepped on. It will be all over the place. Next, the quality of the wire deserves a lot to be desired. It's really thin, and there is little shielding. This means that a lot of power is lost due to wire's length, and the wire is susceptible to electromagnetic interference. If you use a flimsy cable, you're much better with a 4 ft cable and with a 10ft cable.
Finally, given the price of only $20, these headphones are surprisingly hard to drive. A lot of portable devices and some computers need to have their volume level to be set at 90% or higher. Perhaps, the super-long wire has to do with these. But anyways, all I can say is "blah".. Spend around $20 more on better headphones.
Customer Review: Can't do better for under $80 Summary: 4 Stars
For the price, these are amazing. They sound like they should cost about $50 more than they do. I bought them for my wife and sampled them against my Sony MDR-7506 studio monitor headphones. The Sony's have a much more even sound, as I expected, that's what the Sony's are all about. The HD 201 also have a rather flat sound, which is my preference for general purpose headphones. Especially those which will be worn for fairly long periods of time. Too much bass or too much treble gets a bit tiring after a while. The HD 201s tend to be a bit bright, but for $25 they really are amazing. The sound isolation is pretty good, though not as good as the Sony's. The major drawback is that their design transmits quite a bit of sound through the physical enclosure. So, if you bump against the cord or if your glasses rub against the ear pads, the result is heard in your ear. It's like putting a cup over your ear and then tapping on the cup. A little tap can sound pretty loud. The design of the Sony virtually eliminates this kind of intrusion. But the MDR-7506 is about $80 and these are $25 with shipping.
The straight 3 meter cord is great for use at the office or at home. The cord splits and goes to both ears however, rather than coming into just one side. They totally enclose your ears, they're very light and are great for long periods of time. The ear pads don't swivel a full 90 degrees so wearing them around your neck isn't as comfortable as the MDR-7506s. Although closed, they're not great ear muffs so even after extended use, my ears weren't too hot which is good. They're actually quite smart looking. Very tidy and compact for closed circumaural cans.
So, if you're looking for the best closed headphones for extended wear and a fairly flat response tuned for studio monitoring, the Sony MDR-7506 is what you want. If you want all that but also want to spend less than $75, then the HD201 is going to make you very happy. For non-portable general purpose use, these sound fantastic. Don't let the price fool you.
Customer Review: Awesome pair of headphones! Summary: 5 Stars
I watch a lot of movies on my laptop and while it's a HD/blu-ray player, the speakers on it are criminal. I have had on the ear headphones which I hate, I've had ear buds which never fit my ears right and are painful, and the kind of earbuds that go into the canal which was what I used most, but they were painful after awhile and caused a sort of vacuum when swallowing or eating. I decided I needed a good pair over the ear headphones. I searched around Amazon, almost buying a pair of sony, but one review mentioned these. I decided on the Sennheiser HD201 Lightweight Over-Ear Binaural Headphones and received them today. First off, wow...the comfort level is amazing. They fit perfectly around the ears and the padding is plentiful. The cord is very long, which is nice the slit area is plenty big (if you've ever had a pair of headphones where the double wires meet too close to your head, you'll appreciate that!). I plugged them in and fired up a movie...I feel like I'm in a theater! The quality of the sounds are phenominal. A nice blend of bass, but not too deep that it makes your ears vibrate. It gave my movie a surround sound feeling with the crispness. I'm no expert or professional, I'm not listening to music with bass so heavy that I want to feel my headphones vibrating, I'm just a casual user and I can say these are perfect for me. They don't cancel noise, but are pretty padded (I was so impressed that I have paused my movie to write this, they are still on and I can hear the keys as I am typing). But for the price, they are amazing. I have small kids who seem to find everything so I didn't want expensive headphones that I might have a breakdown if they managed to destroy them, but I will be hiding them because they are really fantastic. I can see myself ordering a second set soon as a back up and so I can share my movie with someone since there are 2 headphones jacks on my laptop. So, if you need a pair of solid, comfortable headphones that will give you really supurb sound at a steal of a price, I'd highly recommend them!

Customer Review: Great Headphones with Small Problems Summary: 5 Stars
I'll get right to the point, here are the pros and cons with a quick summary.
Pros:
*The sound quality is amazing.
*The ear pads a decently comfortable, so far they haven't broken in much and still are flat. Broken in ones tend to be softer and puffier.
*The plastic is very durable and the design of the headphones looks good. When looking at the headphones, not a single plastic mold mark is visible, perfection. The plastic is also very strong and hard to break. I backed into a wall really hard with them on my backpack, sandwiched them, and they didn't even crack.
*The headphones come with a larger golden color jack for use with pianos and larger recording machines.
*Lots of bass in them.
Cons:
*Even though the sound quality is great, the bass sometimes gets a little distorted with the Apple iPod Bass Booster in music settings (you really won't need it)
*The cord is 10 feet long and can get a little troublesome. Either get a zip tie or a rubberband to fix that.
*Every time I wear these headphones, my ears get a little sore on the top. It just matters where you place them. Try squeezing the soft cushions til their worn in the place, it will make them more comfortable too.
*A minor, nit-picky problem with the headphones is that they don't fold up. If you want headphones that fold, get the PX-100's by Sennheiser.
Summary:
Overall, these headphones are a steal for the price. At $[...], they give loads of bass with incredible sound quality and have the durability and looks of much more expensive headphones. These headphones should be $60... If your the cheapo kind of person like me, buy these, you won't be disappointed.
