Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Sennheiser HD-280 PRO Headphones

Customer Review: Phenomenal
Summary: 5 Stars

I got these headphones for a gift and I am in love with them...I might marry them. I've owned the eh150s and the 202s. I also currently own the pmx680s for when I'm on the go or when I'm yogging. Obviously the HD280s blow all these out of the water.

Construction ***** - Just picking these up off the table can give you the reassurance that these headphones will last a long time. Every bit of them is thick and solid...the headband, the cups and the cord. (the manual will explain how to replace pieces of your headphones if anything ever gets damaged)

Comfortableness ***** - The headphone padding is thick and the ear cups are the perfect thickness. I've worn these for hours and never had any uncomfortable pains. (I have a big head too)

Convenience ***** - The hd280s can fold up in three different methods which can be shown in the manual when you purchase them. They fold up two different ways and they can also lay flat due to the cups rotating 90 degrees.

The Cord ***** - The cord is a very important element to me when purchasing headphones. I prefer to have a coiled cord to avoid lengthy messes. This cord is the perfect length and the thickness will put you at ease if your worried about cord damage. The area where the cord enters the headphones seems to be well constructed. The gold mini jack has a 1/4" adapter that screws on for stereo use.

The Sound ***** - Most importantly is the sound quality. They are loud and they are tight. The fact that they're tight means that ambient noise has trouble getting in. The bass is crisp but not overwhelming. The overall sound is not as dark as the 202s were, which is a good thing. After listening to many songs on my iPod I have noticed that I could hear things that I've never heard before I got these.

Overall the Sennheiser HD280 Pros are the best headphones I have ever owned and I don't plan on ever replacing them until many years from now. Unless you're an audiophile (which I am not) than I don't see the point in spending any more than what these headphones cost. Only a trained ear could be as nit-picky to prefer a more expensive set of headphones. I use these headphones for video recording, whether they're plugged directly into the camera or into my Zoom h4n. They work perfect for field recording as well as in the studio when editing.

I highly recommend the Hd280s. Sometimes I just stare at them and smile.

Customer Review: HD 280 Pro a great buy!
Summary: 5 Stars

The Sennheiser HD 280 Pro was selling for about 80 bucks when i got them. After a couple of months of usage, i have come to the one conclusion : THEY ARE AWESOME! When I first got them, the headphone felt a bit tight but over time, it loosens up a bit and it isn't quite as vice-like as other reviewers say it is.

SOUND QUALITY 5/5
The SQ is great as far as the high and mid range is concerned. However, the bass is a bit lacking at first but to reach the fullest potential, an amplifier is recommended as most mp3 players can't output enough power to perfectly drive them. my iPod Touch paired with some lossless tracks from the Resistance album by Muse came out nice on the headphones. All the instruments sound very accurate and you are able to hear different notes very clearly. When paired with an amp, the drums and the lower frequencies came to life in the headphones. unamped however, the bass is lacking. one last note, these headphones must be burned in for a while (50 hours min) for them to sound good. out of the box they are okay but the sound will open up after some burn in.

COMFORT 4/5
The comfort is okay on these. you certainly sacrifice comfort when you get the great isolation that this set provides. the isolation is definitely not 32db tho. it is maybe around 20db as it doesn't block out everything.for reference, my sennheiser CX300 isolates more. this set can be worn for about 4 hrs before the discomfort becomes painful. a tip for comfort is to increase the # of clicks on the headband so it is a bit bigger, that somehow seems to increase comfort. in conclusion , i will say that these are VERY snug.

NOISE REDUCTION
5/5
For closed headphones, this set is king for isolation. the snug fit isolates lot of sound but in-ear monitors do far better and the isolation is not 32db. is is lesser than that.

DURABILITY
5/5
In the 4 months i've owned these, nothing has happened to them but i have heard that the headband cracks after a year of use but only time will tell if that will happen to my set.

PRICE
5/5
good price for a good product. it is a good set as long as the price is around the 100 dollar mark. any higher and better sets become more viable for the bang for buck value.

CONCLUSION
A great set of headphones that need a lot of burn in and maybe a bit of amping to get to the fullest potential. would i recommend these? YES!

Customer Review: Blown Away!
Summary: 5 Stars

first let me state that these are my first high end headphones, and i know nothing technical about sound and headphones.
the best headphones i've owned before these 280 pros were the Sony MDR-V150 Monitor Series Headphones with Reversible Earcups.

i want to start off by talking a little bit about the bass on the sennheiser hd-280 pros.
now i've been doing research for months on headphones under $150. i read alot of great reviews for the hd-280 pro's and that's why i bought these.
but in many of the reviews, alot of people have talked about the bass not being as punchy, as they'd like.
so when i got these headphones, i was expecting muted bass.
that's a bad thing as i love techno. . .and i LOVE lots of bass.
what i didn't expect. . .was for the bass to be so powerful and clear.
i mean WOW! these headphones create amazing bass.
i really don't know what people are talking about with the bass lacking.
the bass in my techno songs is very deep, very powerful, very immersive, and best of all, it's so clean and clear.
i'm not exactly sure how to explain it in words.
the bass is just blowing me away though. it sounds just like bass is suppose to sound to me, and with these headphones, it's like all my favorite techno songs are just so much more enjoyable.
it's made my music better. . .and not just a little. . .but ALOT.

i'm also very impressed with how much noise these headphones cut out.
when i'm listening to a bassy song, i can't even hear myself talk. it's pretty amazing.
even just putting the headphones on with no music, it cuts out a tremendous amount of noise around me.
i'm very impressed.

and last of all. . .
very comfortable.
they are big, and bulky.
but extremely comfortable.
the padding on the ear cups provides more then enough cushion, and the cushions on top of the headband is a nice touch.
i can wear these for hours with no discomfort at all.
and i wear glasses. no discomfort at all.

over all i'm absolutely blown away with these headphones.
i've never put on a pair of high end headphones, let alone owned a pair.
i've missed out on alot with my music.
the sennheiser hd-280 pro's just add so many more dimensions to my music. it's mind blowing.

Customer Review: Decent sound, needs lots of power
Summary: 3 Stars

Just to add my two cents to the other fine reviews on here - I used these for a couple days and decided they weren't for me. I was trying to use them at the office as a noise-blocking music headphone, and wanted something that sounded better than my $30 Panasonic HT355 cheapies (a fine headphone for the price, actually). Previously I had used my Sennheiser 595 (excellent, but overkill for office use and not good for blocking noise) and Bose QuietComfort 2 (very comfortable, nice for airplanes, but overpriced and average sound). I also have a pair of Sony MDR-V6 monitors, and they're good but a little bright and clinical-sounding for me, and wearing down after 15 years of use.

Anyway, I wanted a pair that could be driven reasonable well by my office computer (a new Intel iMac). The Sennheiser 280s were just too power-hungry -- at full power they were just at an average listening volume - there was no "11" or even "9" to turn them up to. I imagine this would be an issue with ipods and other portable music players as well. Since the folding design suggests these are designed to be portable, that's a problem. There was also too little bass - I don't want exaggerated booming, but even with the EQ cranked on the bass end, they sounded thin and punchless. Again, this could probably be made better if you drive them with more or better power, but with an ipod or PC you don't have this option. Admittedly, I didn't give them a chance to break in. A 2-day break-in period helped my 595s get fuller and smoother, but I can't believe it would make that dramatic a difference given how bass-deprived the 280s were new.

Comfort was decent - not as good as the Bose or my 595, but not tight/uncomfortable as some reviewers have suggested. I could see easily using them for several hours without a problem.

My temporary solution is to go back to my Panasonic HT355s until I can find something with slightly better sound. As a tip, though, if you are intrigued by the Bose but don't want to spend $300, the Panasonics have a similar sound profile (slightly exaggerated bass, good for portables), and very effective passive noise reduction (sealed design, no electronic reduction), and they're about $270 cheaper. My Sennheiser 595s (and from what I hear, the 555s) are excellent for home listening. The 280s just don't quite fit any of these niches, so I think most would be better off with another headphone.

Customer Review: Great Headphones, Great Price
Summary: 5 Stars

After searching for a pair of 'over-the-ear' wireless headphones with decent sound quality (for under $125), I ended up coming back to a corded pair of headphones. After purchasing and returning quite a few other brands, I settled on the Sennheiser HD-280 Professional Headphones.

There were enough reviews on Amazon for me to feel comfortable with the purchase and the price was almost $50 less than what I found at Fry's Electronics for the exact same pair. One of the main selling points for me was the easily replaceable parts (cord & earpads) as I plan on keeping them for quite awhile. Another plus for me was the heavier coiled cord. A few of the headphones that I purchased (and returned) had very flimsy cords that looked like they were asking to be ripped out or crimped at the first opportunity.

Now that I have been listening to them for about 3 weeks, I would absolutely recommend them to anyone. First, the earpad completely encloses my ears, as it should. But you would be surprised to find out just how many supposedly 'over-the-ear' headphones actually rest on some part of your ear because they are too small. They are lightweight, or at least as lightweight as a pair like this can be, and they are comfortable. Yes, they were a little tight at first, but if you read the instructions, that is the way they are designed. The pressure is there to keep the headphones pressed against your ear to eliminate as much external noise as possible; which it does.

The sound is incredible. The wireless headphones that I was looking at just could not come close to the full range and clarity of sound that these provide. I am hearing new sounds in most of the soundtracks that I listen to while working that I never heard in my previous headphones (IR wireless, on-the-ear). I am looking forward to listening to all of my music with a renewed interest as a result.

The headphones are also collapsible, which is not much of a selling point for me. I would actually prefer that they weren't, as I am not looking for portability in a full-size pair of headphones. Hopefully the extra 'joints' that make it collapsible won't prove to be a weak point as opposed to it being solid construction.

If you are contemplating these headphones, just look at the numbers posted here on Amazon to see just how many people have enjoyed these headphones. Purchase with confidence.
