Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Sennheiser EH-150 Dynamic Sound Evolution Hi-Fi Stereo HeadphonesCustomer Review: Forget about Sony... Summary: 5 Stars
Finally decided to leave the Sony brand after breaking my 3rd pair. I started off with the higher end of the MDR line but after breaking the 1st then the 2nd, I didn't want to spring for more than the V150s. The Sennheiser EH-150s are right smack dab in that price range, so it's fitting that I compare my new set against the lower-end models of the Sony MDR line.
I'm really liking my new EH-150s. The most significant advantage has to be the comfort. Because these fit over and around my ears as opposed to sitting atop them, I can listen to music longer without any discomfort. Beware though, if you have large ears these may not fit precisely. I'm guessing that after I break them in, these will sit perfectly.
The second advantage follows directly from the first. Because of the way they sit, the EH-150s can block some of the background noise. These headphones should however not be confused for noise-canceling, because they simply don't do that.
The third advantage obviously deals with sound quality (disclaimer: I am not a self-proclaimed audiophile). I primarily listen to trance music. Although this genre is rather bassy, it does cover a large frequency range. The EH-150s reproduce the music beautifully. I believe that this is helped by the fact that they sit over and around your ears.
All in all, I am very satisfied with my product. Dollar for dollar, I think you would be hard-pressed to find a better set of cans. I will not be going back to Sony. If anything, I will likely move up through the Sennheiser line as long as these prove to be reliable with continued use and light wear (fingers crossed).
Customer Review: I Guess I'm an audiophile... Summary: 4 Stars
Well, I have had quite a few high-end headphones, from Sony monitors to Bose QC2's. I started really listening to headphones when I worked at Pup N' Taco while in high school. I took my first paycheck and bought a pair of cans from RadioShack. They were the "Realistic" model. Anyway, I've been listening through cans for quite some time now.
The reason I purchased these cans is that I wanted something similar to my Bose QC2. I said "similar". Well, I read the reviews on these headphones and decided to try them out. Afterall, 30.00 is pretty reasonable either way you go.
As for the headphones, the sound is pretty good. The highs and mid range are distinctable. The base is right-on. Not muddy, (at least if you don't over modulate them) The response will be slightly different depending on the type of song you are listening to, and of course it's recording level.
I have listened to several different types of music, from jazz, R&B, and classical. I have to say that I was pleasantly surprised! However...while I enjoy the sound, I can't enjoy it long because the ear cups are kinda uncomfortable. I usually try different ways to put them on my ear, and no matter what, I just can't quite seem to get them really dialed in. I really want to like these, guys. And you know what, I actually do, I just have (and you might too) have to take them off for a bit. That's the only rason I gave them 4 instead of 5 stars.
Overall, you can't go wrong with them. The only real difference I see between these and my Bose is the way these cans fit and my Bose. They (Bose) are just plain "Comfortable". But give these a chance.
Customer Review: Best bang for your buck Summary: 4 Stars
I recently got these headphones, and I'm impressed. I was tempted to order the cheaper HD-201, but all the reviews I read indicated that the bass was sub-par. For the price, Amazon can't be beat (provided they don't raise it over 25).
I am not an audiophile, so my review is subjective and I will try my best to be as objective as possible. The quality of these cans really depends on what you will use it for. If you already have, and are already researching headphones, then it's more than likely that these headphones won't suit you. But, of course, you'll also have to pay more than double the amount of these headphones to approach the quality you may be looking for.
I've tried these cans over PC games, console games, CD audio, and MP3. If distracting others is an issue for you, and that is why you want headphones then this is the best bang for your buck, in my opinion. I've tried several kinds of noise cancelling earbuds (mainly for MP3), but I'd be reluctant to call any of them comfortable. I think it's just the physics of the design - earbuds are just uncomfortable for long periods of time. Most of them are designed to cancel out ambient noise, while stressing the cavity of your ears.
Anyways, these cans perform well in games and action-packed movies. If you're looking for a pair of phones with absolute clarity, look some where else. These cans really capture the extra "uuumph" that you won't find without blasting your stereo. For that reason alone, I consider this a smart buy. I also have a relatively large sized head and ears (being a guy), but these are perfectly comfortable for me.
Customer Review: Dis' comfort Summary: 2 Stars
Like some of the other low-raters, I found the ear cups of these cans to be to be very small -- too uncomfortable for me. Moreover, a quick listen let me know that the audio wasn't for me.
It's clear some of the 5-star reviewers here have never had closed-back circumaural (surround-the-ear) headphones. Yes, in general versus in-ear or lay-on-the-ear headphones, circumaural phones will dominate for:
* comfort
* blocking out noise
* producing better sound
* not annoying your neighbors.
Of course, all circumaural headphones are not equal.
I finally went with Sony MDR-V6's (not 600!), an affordable recording industry go-to design that has not changed since the 80's. The reviews on the MDR-V6 overflow with praise, with some reviewers having them in service for *decades*. You know you are onto something entirely different when the biggest complaint is that the (replaceable) ear pads start to wear/flake after many years. I had a pair of these which I lost after about 10 years service, and echo that praise. I was serendipitously surprised to discover they are still made. My new ones were $65-ish from Amazon, with free shipping. I think this is a remarkable price for a 20+ year lifespan product.
If you are still sold on the EH-150's, I just froogled them, and as of today, they can be had for $20-30.
A final shoutout to Ritz Camera, which sold me the EH-150's. When I called for a return, they refunded my card and said keep 'em. Wow.
Customer Review: Decent. Summary: 4 Stars
So here is the deal, these headphones sound and feel just like any other pair of headphones between the 30-70.00 mark. They're made out of cheap fabric and plastic. They have the same type of cup padding as any other pair of headphones; and, they're slightly biased towards base (which 99.9% of people like). I enjoy music a lot, but I swear to god having purchased a Creative Labs, Sony and now Sennheiser in the same price range (30-70) they're all the same (or indistinguishably close by any mortal). These are a little bit tighter, but it isn't a good or bad thing.
I think a more important metric than sound at this price is build quality, and I don't feel these headphones will last any more than any of the others. I want metal headphones with no plastic. These headphones have some plush padding at the top (like Sony), but it doesn't do much for comfort (just as comfortable as the others). Creative uses foam padding which works just as good. These also look like any other pair of headphones but the band comes up very close to the front of your face, which looks slightly more awkward.
The last thing that I think is weird is the right and left cups have two different cords which meet half way down. I like one cord coming out one cup like Sony/Creative -- but to each their own. I'd say these do slightly better at blocking out external noises than the Sony and Creative.
Until someone makes metal banded headphones, I'll be using the cheapest full cup to get above a 3-star review, because unless something is direly wrong it simply doesn't matter to me or most people I know.
