Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Sennheiser EH-150 Dynamic Sound Evolution Hi-Fi Stereo HeadphonesCustomer Review: From a Musicians Standpoint... Summary: 4 Stars
I purchased this pair of headphones because I hate earbuds compared to over-ear designs, plus this pair came with a 1/4 in. adapter; something I can use when I play my guitar at midnight (Hey, if I get an idea or inspiration, I don't really care if everyone else is alseep!). So that's a big plus to me.
Now, about the quality. The Headphones themselves are quite comfortable, they rest very nicely on the head, the earcups are heavily padded, although you'll probably get that same ear numbness and soreness like I did after an extended period of listening. And the cord is 10 feet long, which might seem cool, but when I am sitting only 3 feet from my amplifier, I really don't need all that length, it's just empty filler space. Unless you plan on plugging into your neighbor's stereo while you sleep in your basement, you won't need that much cord. 6 or 7 feet would be fine, I imagine.
Now referring to sound quality, it's good. Not amazing, not pants-creamingly awesome, but good, very good. For $28? Yeah, probably. I play guitar, mostly heavy metal, and I want something that can keep up if I feel like playing a nice rhthym or a high-pitched lead type thing. Bass tones come in great, mids sit well, and as for treble? Well, they do get a little muddy sometimes, but I can tweak my tonal knobs on my amp to fix that in a jiffy. And if you get too loud, distortion kicks in. Not the kind you hear in heavy metal music, but the bad kind-- poorly compressed CD's kind. It's annoying as hell, but I really need to get pretty damn high on my amp for this to happen. Louder then I need/want to be, anyway.
So, if you want to be completely mind-blown from headphones, then plop down $300 for a pair of Bose, otherwise, these things will do you good while you wait for the second coming (of audio technology).
Customer Review: Amazing headphones. Summary: 5 Stars
These headphones are hands down a great buy. I purchased these around two months ago and have had no problems in the least. They are very durable, I have found this out from accidentally tripping on the cord, also by my younger brother sit on them when they were in my backpack. So they are reliable.
For sound quality, for under $50 I doubt that they can be beat. I purchased mine off amazon for $25 but would've been willing to pay full price. The bass is very resonant and supportive, and mids do not suffer as in a lot of other cheaper headphones. The trebles are all clean and crisp. If the balances of these are not to your liking, equalizers on either an mp3 player or computer can take care of them. They will improve your listening experience with all genres of music, given you play with some eq settings a bit. They bring out things in your music that unless you have had $200 plus headphones will probably not have heard before.
The discomfort that people have complained about is there but isn't noticeable for several hours, unless you have very large ears. A slight shift will fix that also. But be very aware of imitators. If you aren't going to buy from amazons primary store, check Sennheiser's website/customer support to make sure they are qualified dealers or you may be ripped off.
I am very passionate about music and will soon be entering collage to major in music education. My musical background has included running sound at my church, playing tuba since sixth grade, and recently bass guitar, and have been the principle chair in our wind ensemble in high school for the past 2 years. So i have used my ears a very long time in reference to the intricacies in music. I just hope you believe me when I say that these are well worth your money.
Customer Review: After Two Years, They Continue to Be Awesome. Summary: 4 Stars
The pros and cons of the EH-150s have been thoroughly debated. I won't go there. I just want to say this: If you've browsed among the many headphones offered on Amazon, strained your eyes through the reviews and can't drop hundreds for dj quality phones, I suggest the EH-150s to the bargain shopper. You won't be disappointed if you're looking for SOLID quality headphones that can withstand everyday use, are fairly light and portable, and don't make you look like you're piloting a helicopter. I bought these on Amazon on a cold February day in 2008 -- and they're still going strong, no breakages, no frayed cords, split wires, damaged or torn earcups - nothing replaced. Besides minor chipping of the silver paint around the top (from them repeatedly dropping from desk to wood floor) they look fine. They are still superb headphones. I'm not an expert or a sound enthusiast/connoisseur, I just like quality phones that last with a nice full, sharp, not-too-bassy sound. Not 'flat' but 'multi-layered' and true to the recording (non-technical terms). Each instrument and voice is distinct, and high bitrate music sounds phenomenal, as intended. And the Sennheiser brand is as far as you need to look if that's what you want; better than Koss, Sony, Coby what have you - for this price.
A few things:
- Only with music playing at the time of use do these headphones act as 'noise-canceling'. People will have to work to get your attention now, if you can't see them (or are ignoring them).
- Super long cord
- After several hours use your ears will feel the pressure of wearing them. But only after many many hours. Go outside!
- You can get the greatly inferior hd201s at Best Buy for $30 right now or get the eh150s for $10 more.
Customer Review: All the info you need Summary: 5 Stars
Having used these headphones for over a year now, I feel properly qualified to review them. Here is what you need to know:
Yes, these headphones are awesome. They sound great, and totally kick iPod phones out of the water any day. I'm not a sound guru, so I won't start throwing frequency data at you, but I am a very discerning music listener, and these phones are amazing for the money.
However, these cans do lack vibrancy. When you start using them, you will notice that although everything is clear and sharp, the sound overall has a dull-ish quality to it. It has no punch - even iPod phones are more lively than these. But after a couple of weeks I became accustomed to it and used it happily for over a year. (The vibrancy never 'burnt-in'; whenever friends would borrow it they would comment on this lack of punch.) This is not a major issue - you will quickly become used to it and the cans still sound awesome; but it is something to keep in mind.
The sound cancellation is great. I have a large family, but with these on I am in pure heaven - I can't hear anyone! (Really annoys the family though. Haha.) Because the cancellation is so good, you can listen to your iPod and movies at much, much lower sound levels than you would need for normal iPod phones. So these cans are much healthier for your ears and will help preserve your hearing.
But now, after 12 months, the left side is playing up. To be fair, I listen to an obscene amount of music. I used these cans for many hours every single day. An average guy would get many years of use out of these, so I have no complaints.
If you are looking for great phones under $40, these are the ones to get. Enjoy!
Customer Review: Excellent Headphones, but identical to the HD-202 Summary: 5 Stars
I purchased the Sennheiser HD 202 Headphones a while ago and have loved them ever since. They are my work headphones and make listening to other people's phone conversations a thing of the past. (No, they aren't active noise cancelling, but I didn't want that because of the distortion it causes) So last week when I started setting up my home office I decided to get a pair of Sennheiser headphones for home, because the 202's are big enough that I don't particularly want to carry them home and back every day. Shopping around on Amazon, I caught a gold box deal where these EH-150's were on for much less than the list price. (and only a dollar or so more than the HD-202's) I snapped them up immediately. When they arrived at my house yesterday I noticed that, other than the silver headband, they looked a lot like the 202's. Going to Sennheiser's website and comparing the stats confirmed it: they are exactly the same, but the EH-150's are 1.)more expensive and 2.)discontinued.
All that said, they are excellent, whatever the model number. It's true that they are a bit tight, but I have discovered that if you lean the band WAY forward on your head (at almost a 45 degree angle from vertical) the phones actually fit your ears quite nicely, and after a bit of wear the ear cups do form themselves nicely to your head. I can wear my 4-month-old 202's for up to five hours at at time without getting uncomfortable (other than the obvious heat from closed headphones)
If you're looking for an entry level set than I recommend these phones highly...but save yourself some money and pick up the newer version.
