Customer Review: great Hard Drive
Summary: 5 Stars

The Sata Hard drive is one of the easiest to install. First I made backups of my original hard drive and burned it to DVD. Then simply installed the new 500GB Seagate hard drive. On bootup it ask for a start up disk I loaded the backup disk which reinstalled my Windows Vista Pro and all the drivers for my computer. The results is a much larger hard drive which works much better than the factory hard drive.

Customer Review: Very happy with this hard drive
Summary: 5 Stars

I bought this item off the shelf without researching it in advance. I believe that all brands of hard drives have duds and diamonds. I understand how disappointing it can be to get a noisy hard drive or one that fails prematurely. However, this can happen with any brand. Some of the reviews here state that this brand is unreliable, but I'm sure that I would come here and trash this product also if it failed on me.

However, that has not been my experience. I ripped this drive out of the static bag, slapped it in, plugged in the cables, fired up the box, and proceeded to install Windows 7 without one hint of trouble. This has been the fastest, easiest hard drive and system installation I have ever done. I actually thought that I had done something wrong, because it went so fast and smooth. I did not use the CD that came in the box with the hard drive. I just turned on the computer and let Windows 7 install itself. I went out to goof around in the garage for a short while and when I came back it was done. Period. Fini.

The drive has been absolutely silent. I just felt it for heat and it is running cooler than the old drive that is next to it.

I feel bad for anybody else that is not happy with their hard drive, but I sometimes wonder how much of the problem is really one hundred percent of the fault of the hard drive and not because of some other hardware conflict in the computer.

I recommend this hard drive. It is a great value.

Customer Review: Best SATA I have found
Summary: 5 Stars

This Seagate ST3500641AS-RK Barracuda 7200.9 500GB SATA was a complete surprise to me. As expected and is the case with most WD and Seagate internal HDD's, installation was exceptionally easy. The real surprise was the included software. In my case, I had an old and small HDD that was beginning to make noise. Rather than wait until it crashed, I decided to upgrade the size and speed of this boot disk drive. I thought I was going to have to either A) re-install Window and installed software and drivers and copy the files from my old drive (a major headache) or B) use cloning software (I purchased one for this purpose). However, upon installing the Seagate HDD as my second drive, the included software AUTOMATICALLY prompted me to specify if this was to be A) a new boot drive, B) a mirror of the existing drive or C) simply a second HDD for additional storage. I selected the mirror. In no time, the system was copied and operational. THANK YOU SEAGATE

I have only had the device for a few weeks, so I cannot comment on its reliability as this time.

Customer Review: 1.5 Years and Still Going Strong
Summary: 5 Stars

I can certainly empathize with the failed hard drive woes a number of people have experienced with this Seagate Barracuda 500GB SATA Internal Hard Drive but I've had this hard drive for a year and a half and I've had no problems with it. I got it to replace the hard drive on my Dell Dimension E521 and I've been very satisfied with it.

Fast and Quiet
--------------
Read/Write access on this hard drive is fast. Programs load up quickly with minimal "grind" noise as the hard drive is accessed.

Installation
------------
I installed this drive without a hitch on my Dell Dimension E521. "Installation" simply involves cracking open my computer case, removing the data and power cables from my old hard drive, and plugging these cables into their respective connectors on the Seagate Hard Drive. That's it. Windows (XP) recognized and formatted the hard drive with no problems.

Hard Drive Capacity Discrepancies
---------------------------------
When I installed XP on the new drive, Windows (XP) reports the total capacity of the hard drive in My Computer under the "Total Size" column as 465 GB. However, if you right-click on the hard drive icon and select Properties on the pop-up menu, Windows brings up a dialog box which shows the full capacity of the hard drive as 500,096,991,232 bytes (465 GB).

The discrepancy between 500,096,991,232 bytes (~500 GB) and 465 GB is the result of the use of "SI Prefix" system of units and the "Binary Prefix" system of units.

The "SI Prefix" system of units is based on the metric system where 1KB is 1000 bytes, 1MB is 1000,000 bytes, and 1GB is 1000,000,000 bytes - very straight forward. Thus, 500,096,991,232 bytes converted to GB by is done by: 500,096,991,232 bytes / 1000,000,000 bytes per GB = 500.096991232 GB.

The "Binary Prefix" system of units is a little different. In industry speak, 1KB isn't 1000 bytes but 1024 bytes. Here's how it works:

1 KB is 2^10 = 1024 bytes
1 MB is 2^20 = 1,048,576 bytes
1 GB is 2^30 = 1,073,741,824 bytes

As a result, when 500,096,991,232 bytes is converted to GB in the "Binary Prefix" system of units, the result is: 500,096,991,232 bytes / 1,073,741,824 bytes / GB = 465.7516174.

This explains why Windows reports the capacity of the hard drive under My Computer as 465 GB, not 500 GB.

---
The Seagate SATA Internal Hard Drive is fast, ultra quiet, dependable, and provides plenty of storage space. Windows (XP) recognizes and formats it with no problems. If I needed another hard drive, I would get a Seagate again!

Customer Review: Had two die in less than 1 year
Summary: 2 Stars

One died after 4 months, RMA'ed it for the same model. The second one died after 7 months.

I would AVOID SEAGATE. The drive is NOT quiet at all.

Compared to WD, Seagate is [...]. I took a chance with Seagate after owning mostly WD and Maxtor drives. This was a horrible decision.
