Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Seagate ST302504FDA1E1-RK FreeAgent Desktop 250 GB 3.5" USB 2.0 External Hard DriveCustomer Review: For all of the hype, this harddrive is nothing more than a glorified paperweight Summary: 1 Stars
I bought this hard drive to help back-up my parents computer in prepartion for getting a new machine. They complained of having issues accessing the drive and initially thought it was user error, however, after taking the hard drive home and working with it, I immediately saw that the computer would only recognize the hard drive and allow me to access it occasionally, and even if it did, after returning to it later that day or in the morning, it might show it in "My Computer", but if i tried to open it, i would receive a message stating it was unaccessible, along with the files, etc. stored on it.
After trying to format it several times and scan it with anti-virus software, it continues to be relatively worthless.
Extremely dissapointing given my otherwise superb experience with Seagate, but i would think twice before buying another seagate drive again -
Customer Review: Setup is a breeze Summary: 4 Stars
After delaying a computer backup for months on end, knowing that backing everything up on disk would take forever, I finally purchased this drive with the hope I could finally check the task off of my to do list and keep up with backups on a monthly basis. Setup was a breeze and the copy of files to the drive, including large image and video files, was swift. What would have taken me hours was done in less the one. Only time will tell whether the drive has stamina, but so far I couldn't be happier. It hides behind my laptop monitor, and I barely know it's there. As far as I can tell, there is no need to shut down the drive ("eject hardware") like with my last drive. The need for that process was part of what led to the downfall of my last drive when Windows was acting unstable, so I'm hoping that this drive works more compatibly with my current setup.
Customer Review: Works with Vista (Hallelujah) Summary: 5 Stars
My main concern was getting this to work with Vista. I made the mistake of upgrading my computer when Vista was new and have had a terrible time with hard drives (SATA). But this worked immediately out of the box, was recognized and can be used with the software that comes with it just fine. In fact, I prefer to use Windows back up. It also works with Ubuntu Linux 7.10 with no problems. It is quiet and small and I have not, as a previous reviewer did, had a problem with the cord not staying plugged in. To the poor guy who wanted the software, it is already loaded on the drive, as it tells you on the box. You just plug in the power, then plug in the USB cable, connect to your PC's USB port and wait. It will load. Follow the onscreen directions. It's really... well I guess it's too late to say it's stupid proof.
Customer Review: Seagate drive delivers! Summary: 5 Stars
I recently bought this drive and so far it has really impressed me. Granted, like any hard drive, the life expectancy is indeterminable, but the fact that Seagate gives you a 5 year warranty with this purchase gives me faith.
My main key points:
1) The transfer rate is the same as what is listed. No surprises there.
2) The entire drive is a lot smaller than what is pictured. When I first saw the photo I thought this thing was going to be a monster. Turns out, it's pretty compact. The fact that it stands on its end gives it an even smaller footprint. I'm very impressed.
3) The price is excellent! Couldn't get a better deal even if I built the external hard drive myself.
4) The included software is also very reliable and complete.
Customer Review: Elegant looking but flawed in performance Summary: 3 Stars
Like the previous review, the only gripe that I have is that it isn't recognized when I first boot. It hangs in the post when it gets to that drive and I have to start the boot over again and then it is recognized and the boot continues normally. It's as if the post sends the inquiry to the device before the drive is powered up. So, as long as I reboot, the drive is still powered up and there is no hesitation on recognition.
I have several other external drives, namely the Seagate eSATA External Hard Drive with the power switch and have been satisfied with them. Apparently they power down if you aren't using them event though the power switch is on. This causes a brief delay when you want to access them but they are recognized with no problem in the boot process.
