Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Seagate ST302504FDA1E1-RK FreeAgent Desktop 250 GB 3.5" USB 2.0 External Hard DriveCustomer Review: Great hardware; complex instructions. Summary: 4 Stars
I know something about computers, but I'm not an engineer. I had problems first trying to do an entire disk backup until I figured out that the device had to be "prepped". (They have a proprietary term for this step which currently escapes me, but will be understood once the directions are read.) This wasn't made clear in the directions. The manual made this step appear like it was optional, but it is a mandatory procedure. Once the FreeAgent was prepped, everything went fine.
The fact that an entire disk backup is possible is a wonderful thing. I have yet to do an incremental backup, but I have no reason to believe that they'll be any problems with that.
Don't be alarmed when the FreeAgent software takes over your system and blocks out Windows. Your operating system is still there. Just remove the installation CD, down the system completely, remove the FreeAgent, and power up again. You'll boot up normally at that point.
Great unit, but the instructions are overly complex and should be revised.
Customer Review: Save the box - you'll need it to return the drive Summary: 1 Stars
The FreeAgent was simple to set up and worked great...at first. After twelve weeks, the drive stopped working; my computers would not recognize it. I called Seagate and they told me I needed to format the drive. The Seagate technician attempted to sell me a $125 data recovery program to get my data back. Luckily, I had a backup of my data. The technician assured me the drive was not defective and would work fine after the reformat. After the format, it did work fine....for two weeks. Suddenly, my computers would not recognize the drive. When I contacted Seagate, they told me the drive was defective and I needed to pay to return the drive and they would then send a refurbished drive; that's the way the five year warranty works. This time, they tried to sell me professional data recovery services to resurrect the data the drive lost. I'm still trying to decide whether I want to pay to return the drive. Will they send me another defective drive that I will again have to pay to return? Or will the refurbished drive be the charm?
Customer Review: Hijacked by Seagate Summary: 1 Stars
I had a similar problem as a previous reviewer -- the FreeAgent kept hijacking my computer, tying up all its memory and eventually crashing it. At one point, I had to reboot my computer twice in a row to get it working again. Before finalizing the reboot process, the computer automatically ran scandisk and performed some kind of repairs (unfortunately, I didn't record the results of the repairs). When it finally finished rebooting, I checked the Seagate and found that all of the 30+ GB that had been previously saved onto it was gone without a trace. There was no trace of the lost data even in the Recycle Bin. After that, the only way I was able to get the computer to work normally was to power down the Seagate. Once I did that, my computer was back to its normal self. I returned the Seagate for a refund and bought a 400 GB internal Seagate hard drive for $90 instead and it has been working fine. I have to give Amazon credit--their online return process was exceedingly easy. Amazon even paid the return shipping fee!
Customer Review: Amazon Fixed the Problem Summary: 3 Stars
When I got the FreeAgent 250GB hard drive it was dead. I contacted Seagate support and they just sat there on the phone after telling them the problem. I could here people in the background, so I just hung up. I contacted Amazon to return it and literally the second day a new one was on my door step. Before the broken one got to them, lol. Now that's sevice and support!!
Now the drive is nice. The back up his really nice to have but the software on the drive with a back up takes up almost 80GB. What I really like about it is the sleep mode, so when your not using it you don't have to shut it off because of it wasting energy. Like other hard drives there loud and don't go into sleep mode if not using it. This one does. No loud noise and no reason to shut it off. Very happy with the speed of file transfers and navigating the folders, where some lack. I have now 3 external hard drives and this is my favorite on by far. 1) sleep mode. 2)automatic back up. 3)slim quite design.
Customer Review: Seagate ST302504FDA1E1-RK Summary: 5 Stars
This product was purchased over four months ago and I'm glad to report that it has performed as hoped. I had read reviews that say this drive performed badly but I had purchased Seagate hard drives before and felt comfortable with them.
I'm using this hard drive as part of my security system to record seven days of surveillance of two cameras that are connected to my business PC. This means that this hard drive is operating 24-7. It is located away from the PC in an area where there is not much ventilation. You might ask why I have it set up like this? Simple, I'm afraid that if I have a break in thieves would easily steal the PC and all the surveillance information inside it's hard drive. This set up would allow the PC to be stolen but I would still keep the information and the thieve's identity in the hidden external drive. I also have scheduled back ups of my important data.
In a nutshell....I don't think you can do any better than this.
