Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Seagate FreeAgent Pro 750 GB 3.5" USB 2.0/eSATA External Hard DriveCustomer Review: nice drive, trial software Summary: 4 Stars
This is a nice drive with plenty of storage and fast data access. I now have 2 of these connected via eSATA and I am very pleased with data access time. The data write speed is good as well. It comes with some backup software that is very nice, but unfortunately it is a 30-day trial. It would have been nice to have a fully functional version after shelling out $240 for the drive.
If you have no need for the backup software, don't install the Seagate software package when you hookup the drive. It has a couple apps that, once installed, run as background processes on your PC (of course!). You don't need to install any drivers or software to use the drive. It is ready to go out-of-the-box. Cool orange light too!
Customer Review: Many problems Summary: 1 Stars
I had this for several years. The annoying orange light defaults to being on. I found out how to turn it off, but after a while it just started glowing again on its own. There were delayed write errors every week. Many times, the computer would not recognize the drive. This would happen regularly, and I would have to power down the drive and reconnect it. Since I was using this drive for backups, I did not access it often, and there was no visible indication that it was not connected. I had to start checking in Windows Explorer that it was connected. Finally, one day the orange light started blinking. The flashing light seemed to indicate that it finally died, and there was no way to get the computer to recognize it.
Customer Review: A great companion for Dish Network DVRs Summary: 5 Stars
I purchased the 750GB Seagate FreeAgent USB drive to use with my Dish Network ViP 622 DVR. It was truly plug-and-play, and the drive was up and running and connected to the DVR in just minutes.
From there, it was simple to transfer a bunch of high-def movies to the drive, creating the start of a HD movie archive. The drive is quiet, looks great in the entertainment center, and is plenty fast enough to feed HD content to the DVR via USB 2.
I've read that some have had problems with sleep mode on this drive, but the sleep mode works fine with my 622 -- it spins down after a period of inactivity, and wakes up as needed when the drive is accessed through the DVR menus.
Customer Review: Buy the non-PRO version, the online backup is WORTHLESS Summary: 2 Stars
I bought the PRO version to have online backup ability. They offer 500 MB free for the trial version and you can purchase up to 5 GB for $12 a month. This seems USELESS to me, as most people purchasing a hardrive of 320, 500, or 750 GB are going to need much more backup space. I can store 5 GB for free on my hotmail account. What was their marketing department thinking when they only offer 5 GB of online backup, and even the price for that is high?
The hardrive itself is a good price, and besides the fact that the first one I bought was DOA (I think it was the cheap power supply that didn't work) the hardware is fine. Buy the non-PRO version!
Customer Review: Good drive, bad backup software Summary: 3 Stars
I bought this USB hard drive in November 2007. The drive is stylish and fast.
While the included backup software has a nice front end, once activated it continually runs in the background chewing up CPU resources and causing my machine (relatively new machine 1 year old) to run slowly. I tried numerous settings and had the latest software. I later switched to norton ghost, which does a great job of backing up when and how I want.
If the backup software that came with the drive was usable, then this would have been 4 stars. If the internet sharing feature was not limited to 6 months and/or was more accessible then + 1 star.
