Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Seagate FreeAgent Pro 750 GB 3.5" USB 2.0/eSATA External Hard DriveCustomer Review: Great drive if you have proper hands... Summary: 5 Stars
I've read so many negative reviews on this, that i decided to say something, too.
I've been using this drive for 2,5 years already (bought it in 2007, at that time external 750gb was pretty great), and it is still working flawlessly. PC is on 12-14 hours a day and every day, i am seeding around 2000 (two thousands) torrents from it so you can imagine that it's in heavy use every single second of it's life.
And still it's working properly, i never had any data lost. It's quite fast and responsive, easily detectable on win7, xp and various linux distributions.
Yes, heat is a bit of problem, but if you keep this HDD somewhere in the corner (mine is under the bed) then you won't get hurt.
Design is superb.
So, for 2007 it was such a great piece of hardware. Now you can buy something cheaper, i guess. Maybe not.
I really don't know, maybe i was just lucky to get proper hdd and others are really terrible, but it sounds unlikely to me.

Customer Review: Sync software is only a trial, have to purchase additional Summary: 3 Stars
I was shocked to see that the sync software (Auto Backup), that allows you to do everything described in what this drive does, is an add on you have to purchase. You get only a short trial period, then the only utility that you can use is the diagnostic utility.
UPDATE: thanks to the comment, I learned I did not have a card that gave me a serial number I needed to install the Auto Backup software full version. Once I got the number I needed, everything installed and is working beautifully.
This drive is replacing a Western Digital drive that was causing my computer to crash all the time. Since I replaced that drive with this Seagate, not a single problem. The drive is ready when ever I need it and works just as if it were an internal drive... which is what I was looking for.
It comes with USB and Firewire cables and adapters that attach to the drive so you can use it either way. I've tried both and both work without a hitch. So far it's been a good drive for me.
Customer Review: Stay away, far away. 2 drives didn't last a year, eSATA could not be made to work Summary: 1 Stars
I bought two of these about a year ago. They look pretty, but...
Drive 1 & 2: I got these for eSATA speeds. eSATA could not be made to work (Seagate technicians agreed)
Drive 1 & 2: They run incredibly hot
Drive 1: Failed in a few weeks, rec'd replacement.
Drive 2: Failed after 9 months (disk crash)
Drive 1: Failed mysteriously today (you can see the small internal light registering the attempt to start, but the drive does not start up)
To add insult to injury, I did not pay attention (my bad) to the fact that these drives don't have power switches (they have a press area to start them if they quiesce) and, since they are not recognized as "on" about half the time, I had to use the power cords to stop/start them so that they would be recognized upon power-up.
I am so irritated I don't even want replacements. My more recent large drives are Iomega - go there instead.
Customer Review: Seagate FreeAgent External 750 GB Hard Drive and Vista 64 Bit Summary: 1 Stars
Seagate FreeAgent External 750 GB Hard Drive and Vista 64 Bit
I like my FreeAgent drive, I just wish the software would work with my 64 bit Vista.
The Seagate software will not save selective backup plans that are accessible by the backup software. I talked to the Seagate's help desk and they told me the current backup software does not work on 64 bit Vista and they are not planning on creating a 64 bit version of the program any time in the future.
There is nothing on the box to indicate that the Seagate software does not work with 64 bit Vista.
So my recommendation is, if you have 64 bit Vista, find a drive where the backup software works, because the Seagate FreeAgent doesn't work as a backup solution on 64 bit Vista.
PS: I had to give this one star because Amazon would not let me give a zero star rating.
Customer Review: Like Everything Except the Lights Summary: 5 Stars
I've had this external hard drive for over a month now. No problems whatsoever. It doesn't run hot (just warm to the touch) and its pretty quiet. I very rarely hear anything out of it.
The FreeAgent software is the best thing about it. No more incremental backups as in the past. FreeAgent scans for all changes in your "My" personal folders (My Documents, My Music, etc.) and backups up those changes in the background so that you are always current. Google FreeAgent for all the details. Note that you can purchase FreeAgent separately to use in other drive systems.
Kids may like the glowing yellow band light that stretches around the outside of the drive enclosure. I personally find it distracting and a waste of energy. But, nicely, you easily can opt to turn it off via the software.
All in all, I would buy it again.
