Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Seagate FreeAgent Pro 750 GB 3.5" USB 2.0/eSATA External Hard DriveCustomer Review: Many problems. Poor tech support. Summary: 2 Stars
I purchased this drive because it was on sale at Best Buy and my Western Electric external drive was dying after a little more than 18 months of use. I need to keep my files on an external drive because the hard drive on my computer is too small. I was happy with the drive for about 1 day then started to have problems. Problem 1: After I power down my computer the Seagate drive shuts down, but when I come home hours later the drive will be powered up again even though the computer is still off. Tech support had no explanation and suggested I unplug the drive. Problem 2: Every time I power down the computer when I power back up again I-tunes can no longer find the songs in my library and I have to recreate the library by switching the location to a different drive so the files all refresh, then switching the location back to the Seagate. This happens every time the computer powers down and if i don't recreate the library by switching drives back and forth I-tunes can't find any of my songs. Tech support has no explanation for this either and claims it's an I-tunes issue. I've always kept my I-tunes music on an external drive and never had any kind of problem like this before. Tech support via e-mail responds quickly but the responses are not helpful at all and give the impression that questions are being answered by people who don't speak English and don't know anything about computers or the specific Seagate product. I am extremely unhappy with this drive and will need to replace it with a model by a different company ASAP. AVOID!!!
Customer Review: Stay away from Seagate Summary: 1 Stars
We bought this hard drive when my laptop hard drive became to full. At first the hard drive worked grate. We downloaded all the family pictures and videos from the last 15 years on to it and a few other important items. Well, 6 weeks later the drive failed to connect to the computer. It had not been dropped or abused in anyway. We contacted Seagate and they agreed to send us a USED replacement drive, but they would not cover getting our data back. They sent us the replacement and we promptly after deciding we could not fix the problem by exchanging some of the hardware sent the broken drive and the replacement drive to Seagate data recovery center. We were told that it would cost $1900.00 to get our data back. Although that hurt our pocket book greatly we had to have our data and we took responsibility for only having one copy of the data and no back up copy (lesson learned).
Well, while we are waiting to hear back from Seagate about the data recovery Seagate turns around and charges us $304.00 for the USED replacement drive too. I tried to call and the office was closed for MLK Day (What...they are not a government entity???)
This company is out to rip people off. After doing some research I found they are doing this to a lot of people. They put out a poor quality product and then when it promptly fails they know they can charge people outrageous prices to recover their data. Sounds like a pretty good racket if you ask me. We will no longer buy Seagate products.

Customer Review: Mine work great Summary: 4 Stars
Just to counter all the negative reviews here, I have to say I own to of these 750 GB drives. Mine are on 24x7, connected via USB 2.0 to my Windows computer and used for backup. Both units, ordered 6 months apart from Amazon, have been operating flawlessly for several years now. No issues whatsoever.
Now, I'm not a disc freak, I don't spec out transfer rates, etc. because all I need to do is back up data. For my purposes these work great. They sit on top of my desk in a well-ventilated area and have had zero heat issues. My cases are not even that warm to the touch at all. On occasion I may have to wait a moment while the drives spin back up if they've been in sleep mode which is perfectly understandable.
All drives lose a significant percentage of space for formatting and managing block allocations, etc. so those complaining that they 750GB drives only have 675GB space, that's the same for all drives. It's just annoying as capacities get larger, and this IS explained in fine print on the packaging too.
Take the negative reviews with a grain of salt. I think some users simply received bad units or units damaged in shipping, or otherwise mis-use their equipment or expect it to last forever. These are hardware components, if I get 3 years reliable service out of them I'm fine with that (and I have...)
Personally, I have been working with computers for almost 20 years and can say I have found Seagate drives to be much more reliable than, say, Western Digital or Iomega.
Customer Review: Tons of problematic errors and corruption Summary: 1 Stars
My hard drive has gotten the same problems with the first one I initially bought and the new one I had replaced by Seagate.....I have no idea what the problem could be. I even got it working for about a week without any problems shut down my computer and hard drive and called HP to reformat and reinstall everything onto my computer....sent it out got it back....wa-la clean slate now it shouldnt be a computer problem....reinstalled everything onto the computer again.....a week later same problem with the hard drive...not to mention A TON OF MY MUSIC COLLECTION NOW HAD SKIPS IN THE SONG WHEN THEY WERE NEVER THERE BEFORE.....I'm a die hard Exact Audio Copy user with .log files all the time to make sure the disc was ripped correctly....My music does not have skips in it....the files transferred were slightly corrupted and when I called support they told me to reformat it.....the drive wouldnt let me......then they told me to run a chkdsk.....wouldnt let me....so I had it replaced....and now I'm going through the same problems......WOULD NOT RECCOMMEND SEAGATE PRODUCT AT ALL!!!
P.S. For all those who say this is complaining I ask you to come deal with this problem yourself. I turn on the hard drive ONLY to backup once every 2 weeks. So it is never over worked ever. It's just a plain and simple faulty product. I love the 5 year warranty I hate having to pay shipping for it every time it breaks though. I might as well buy a new hard drive the rate this thing is breaking over 5 year period.
Customer Review: Can you afford to replace a 750GB drive per year? Summary: 1 Stars
This drive is beautiful, no doubt - it's what attracted me to it in the first place. From its brushed steel casing to the amber glow it emits, the drive is really a looker -- and I got it from Circuit City on sale, too, so the price was right.
However, 7 months after I purchased it and had been using it as the primary back-up drive for my MacBook Pro, it began making strange noises. I attempted to defrag the drive with Drive Genius to fix whatever was causing the sounds, to no avail. So I moved as much data as I could off the thing. During the migration, it crapped out. Now when it's plugged in, it emits a high-pitched squeal that is excruciating to listen to, and my MacBook Pro says that the disc is irrepairable and only "part of the data" is available to me.
Much of the data was saved elsewhere as well, so I don't think I have any catatrostrophic loss of data - but for this thing to just die less than a year after purchase is inexcusable. I have drives from Western Digital and Maxtor that have been out through the paces, left on all night and all day, for months at a time -- and *never* had a problem with them (knock on wood).
This is my first and last purchase from Seagate. As they sometimes say of dumb attractive people, "It's a pretty little house, but nobody lives there." Quite literally for the Seagate FreeAgent - worse, this house is condemned.
