Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Seagate 1TB Barracuda 7200.11 Bulk/OEM Hard Drive ST31000340AS

Customer Review: BEWARE !!! BAD DRIVE !!! NO SUPPORT !!! NO WARRANTY !!!
Summary: 1 Stars

I bought this drive on Sept 26, 2008. Amazon was right on with shipping and delivery.

The drive went south and was not longer recognized by the BIOS or the OS (Vista). Trying to get help and/or warranty service from Seagate is just NOT an option. Seagate has turned a deaf ear on all of their users. Go to their website and read some of the posts.

As I am writing this I am in queue with Seagate on speakerphone and I've been listening to their catchy tune for about an hour.

I have since purchased a 1TB Western Digital from Amazon. Again Amazon has been great and the WD drive is working great.

I RECOMMEND THAT ALL STAY AWAY FROM ANY SEAGATE PRODUCT. I ALSO RECOMEND THAT AMAZON REVIEW THEIR WORKING RELATIONSHIP WITH SEAGATE. SOME MAY CONSIDER THIS A PROBLEM WITH AMAZON.

PERSONALLY I DON'T THINK AMAZON SHOULD BE DEALING WITH A VENDOR THAT DOES NOT STAND BEHIND THEIR PRODUCTS.

Customer Review: Don't buy oem hard drives online
Summary: 5 Stars

Big and quiet. Five year warranty.
Much faster than my drives from just 3 years ago (though this is true with most new model Seagate, Western Digital, Hitachi, and Samsung drives).

I buy most of my computer parts, CDs, DVDs, books, etc online.
But I never buy OEM harddrives online. Every site with reviews has customers complaining about drives being DOA or, far worse, going dead two months later. And the reviews mention shoddy packaging.

Hard drives are delicate, the retail boxes are specially designed to absorb shock.

If you have a 1000 gig hard drive full of data, would you rather

a) have it been bought in a specially designed retail box that was delivered to a store as part of a large palette?

or

b) had it wrapped in bubble wrap, placed in a small individual box, and thrown around in several shipping warehouses before you got it.

Customer Review: Saddened to say Amazon failed to ship the drive properly
Summary: 1 Stars

A warning:
I received an OEM drive, i.e. the part was pulled from the mfr's shipping container and reshipped. Amazon failed to properly prepare the drive for shipping. Because I stupidly assumed a SATA cable came with the drive I will have to get one before I can tell if it is working at all. If I am unfortunate enough that it works I am afraid I can't expect a full life expectancy because it has been slammed around enough to pop all the internal airpacs.

Specifically the drive came in a 9X12 inch Amazon box with a few (unpopped)airpacs then an internal 9X6 inch Amazon Box with an ironic "Ready to Ship!" sticker containing the drive and 2 popped airpacs. I don't think there was enough packaging to prevent rattling of the 9X6 box and inside the 9X6 box obviously experienced enough acceleration to pop all the airpacs placed with the drive.

Customer Review: Drive failed within days; replaced quickly and works well so far
Summary: 4 Stars

I love Seagate. I use only Seagate drives because the only drives I've ever seen fail are Western Digital and IBM/Hitachi. Unfortunately, after using this drive for a week or so, it failed catastrophically, failing Seagate's "Long Generic" diagnostic.) Fortunately, I was still burning in the system and hadn't put any important data on it yet.

I used Amazon.com to report the defective unit late Sunday night. Amazon shipped a replacement within hours, and I had it on Tuesday. This new unit has been running fine for a few weeks now and, based on my experience, should continue to for many years.

Conclusion: Always test your system for a week or two. Amazon's RMA system is second to none (especially when compared to NewEgg). It's worth a couple extra bucks for such great service.

Customer Review: Great drive
Summary: 5 Stars

I was happy to go with Seagate and that's what we've always used at work. I love the fact that it has a 5yr warranty. I do have to say that we recently switched to buying Western Digital brand at work when our Seagate failure rate skyrocketed past 50% of purchased drives. This *cough* seemed to come after their purchase of Maxtor *cough*. To be fair to Seagate, they cannot control how the hard drives are shipped unless you buy straight from them!

I have two of these drives setup in RAID 1 configuration and loving it so far. great product. Keep in mind (as others have said) the drive will arrive screwless, wireless and instructionless. If you don't know how to install one, I probably wouldn't practice with your brand new 1 TB drive.
