Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Scosche IDR350m Increased Dynamic Range Earphones with TapLINE (White)Customer Review: great value, great in line mic & control Summary: 4 Stars
These were not purchased to be my primary Gen 3s Iphone headphone. I purchased them as a replacement for my Ultimate Buds, which I needed to send in for repair. Long an Eytomic lover, I liked the Ultimate Buds for using the Eytomic ER6i drivers, which I've used for a number of years which they meld with the original Apple Iphone remote headphones. So I get the best of both worlds.
As a back up for the Iphone's headphones, I'd purchased some Ultimate Ears (for a really low special one day price) for the microphone, but after using the remote control on the inline wires of the Ipod original Iphone headphones (melded into the ER6i drives) I found myself spoiled. Not wanting to do without while my Ultimate Buds were sent in for warranty work, I looked for a reasonably priced replacement.
The Scosche IDR350m were on sale for $32 & with my prime shipping, I'd have them in one day for a $4.00 shipping fee. Seemed reasonable enough.
Now I wasn't expecting great sound, good sound was acceptable.
When I received them the next day, (thanks Amazon Prime) I set about opening them up. Here is where these value headphones lost a five star rating.
Included in the blisterwrap are Interchangeable color caps, something I probably wouldn't use, but, they're there. The blisterwrap, even though it's in-cased in a sealed box, is molded together, requiring a sharp object, like a razor blade to open them. A pain, but all to normal.
When you get through the environmentally wasteful blisterwrap, you think you can just remove the headphones from the winding layout in the preformed plastic. Wrong. In trying to do so, your little interchangeable color caps go flying all over the place. If you're in a room with furniture, you'll most likely have them end up under a chair, couch, table, or tv stand, which is what happened to me. It's not that I intended to use them, but I have dogs who I can envision swallowing them. So out comes the vacuum cleaner, and bye bye caps (at least I hoped they got sucked up).
So the caps are an irritant, but not the main problem. The thin delicate headphone wires are attached to the blisterwarp, with no apparent (at least to old eyes like mine) means such as tape to give you a warning you can't just pull them out. So in pulling them out, you run the risk of damaging the wires. I was finally able to get them out however, though I wish they had disclosed this packing feature.
When I hooked them up, I was surprised the inline remote was actually better than the one Apple sells and Ultimate Buds uses, so I was very please with that aspect of the headphones.
However, most people will be purchasing them for the sound. So, taking into account that everyone's ears are different, I can only speak to how I found them, in comparison to my Eytomic (and Ultimate buds since they use the same drivers), my Ultimate ears, and my Shure E3.
A lot more comfortable than my Eytomic & Ultimate Buds but not as good at keeping out surrounding noise. I'm not too certain how well they'd perform on say, an airplane but good enough for daily back ground noise. Nor can I see them staying in ear with the same degree of certainty I get with the ER6i. Surprisingly superior/fuller bass, not as clear highs.
Ultimate Ears: Scosche & Ultimate Ears have an equal fit, at least with the flanges that came on them out of the box. The Scosche does have different sizes in a pouch. Sound, pretty similar. I have to give the advantage to Scosche because even though both have microphones, the Scosche has the inline remote and retail without a special, for less.
Shure E3: I've been back and forth on the E3 versus the Eytomic ER6. Both have strengths and weakness which I won't go into here, you can read my reviews on either if you're interested. As for comparing to the Scosche, for the price, not the sound or quality of the make, Scosche inches out the E3 at least for the Iphone. If I was going for an Ipod classic, E3 no doubt. For a Nano, because of the thickness of the E3 cord, which is part of why I've gone back & forth on the E3 v the ER6, I'd probably stay with an ER6, and pass on the Scosche.
Overall, for an inexpensive set of Iphone in ear headphones, I can, at this time, recommend the Scosche, we'll see how well they stand up and I'll revisit this review at that time.
