I love retractable cables... even sought out a vacuum cleaner that had one. So naturally when I got an iPhone I went looking for a retractable data cable for it. The Scoche was the best-reviewed of them all, but also seemed to be the most durable (and durability can be a huge problem with these thin, flat retractable cables). It was fairly costly, but I the build quality seemed to justify the cost.
I bought it to keep in my travel kit, so most important to me was that it was good for syncing as well as charging. I had purchased another retractable cable with dock connector before to find out it only had the charging pins connected... so when I tried to use it to sync my iPhone with my computer nothing happened. The Scoche on the other hand has all of its pins connected, so it's a true replacement for a regular Apple cable.
I have to laugh though, because I'm quite sure a coiled up Apple cable (especially the newest ones with the ultra-slim connector) occupies less space than this. The retraction mechanism on this is pretty substantial (which I'm sure is necessary to ensure proper operation) but it adds considerable bulk and weight. So when it comes down to it, these things are mainly for anal people like me who hate cord tangles and like things neat and tidy. Otherwise you'll save money and space just buying one of the new type of Apple cables.
Oh, one other potential issue is that the connector on this is not the slim type, and therefore it is not compatible with the iPhone 4 bumper case. That's pretty common amongst third-part accessories, but just thought I would mention it to anyone else who was wondering.
