Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Satechi SP400 Smart-Pointer (Red) 2.4Ghz RF Wireless Presenter with Mouse Function and Laser PointerCustomer Review: Good remote but be aware of lower left button and lower right button Summary: 4 Stars
I like this remote and would recommend its purchase. However, it is important for the presenter to understand that, in presenter mode:
o the lower left button sends B, which tells PowerPoint to display a black screen. Pressing the button again sends another B, which tells PowerPoint to resume at the current slide.
o the lower right button alternates between sending an F5 (start slide show at first slide) and an Escape (exit slide show).
If the presenter is unaware of this functionality they may inadvertently press one of these buttons and then wonder how they got into trouble. I have witnessed both of these scenarios (black screen, exit slide show) during real presentations and the presenter was confused about what was happening.
One solution is for the presenter to be aware of this functionality and to know how to recover:
o Black Screen: press the lower left button again. Or press any of the next slide or previous slide buttons. The slide show will resume with the last-displayed slide.
o Exited slide show: press Shift+F5 (start slide show from current slide) or use the mouse (or SP400 in mouse mode) to execute Slide Show > Start Slide Show > From Current Slide. Note that when using the PowerPoint Viewer, as opposed to the full version of PowerPoint, recovery requires restarting the viewer and navigating to the last-displayed slide.
An alternative solution is to suppress the B key and Escape key functionality when in PowerPoint slide show mode. I have implemented this via an AutoHotKey macro, which I place in the All Users Startup folder so it always loads when the PC boots. (The code is simple but there are lots of comments, including how to exit the slide show once Escape has been disabled. And, hopefully, what you are seeing looks better than Amazon preview mode, which removes all of the spaces.)
SetTitleMatchMode 2 ; Windows title can just contain the desired string; it does not have to start with the desired string
; Microsoft PowerPoint Customizations
#IfWinActive PowerPoint Slide Show
b::return ; bypass 'black screen' command (suppress unintended press of MouseLeftClick button on SP400 remote when in presentation mode)
; Presenter can still press '.' (period) for black screen / resume from black screen.
; Presenter can still press W for white screen / resume from white screen.
; Resume at the last-displayed slide can also be accomplished by using any of the next slide or previous slide keystrokes or SP400 buttons.
; The problem is the the presenter has to recognize what caused the problem (s/he pressed the wrong button on the SP400);
; otherwise, the presenter may think the the black screen is caused by a hardware problem, software problem, or system setting.
; Bypass 'end slide show' command (suppress unintended press of MouseRightClick button on SP400 remote when in presentation mode)
; The SP400 MouseRightClick button alternates between sending F5 (start slide show at first slide) and Escape (end slide show) even if there are intervening button presses.
; For the full version of PowerPoint, Escape exits the slide show and returns to PowerPoint edit mode.
; The slide show can be resumed at the current slide by pressing Shift+F5 or using the mouse (Slide Show > Start Slide Show > From Current Slide).
; For the PowerPoint Viewer, as opposed to the PowerPoint full version, Escape exits the Viewer. To get back to the last-displayed slide requires restarting the Viewer and manually navigating.
; Instead of using Escape to exit the slide show, use one of the following:
; - (Minus/hyphen/dash key) either on the main keyboard or NumPad
; Ctrl+Break
; Alt+F4
Escape:: ; bypass end slide show
;F5:: ; start slide show at first slide (leave active)
return
;#IfWinActive ; end PowerPoint Slide Show remapping
; If you decide to leave Escape active, I suggest converting F5 (start slide show at first slide) to Shift+F5 (start slide show at current slide). (remove ; from the beginning of the next three lines to make the code active)
;#IfWinActive Microsoft PowerPoint ; PowerPoint in edit mode, not slide show mode
;F5::send +{F5} ; convert F5 to Shift+F5
;#IfWinActive ; end Microsoft PowerPoint
; END END END ====== Microsoft PowerPoint Customizations
The above AutoHotKey macro has only been tested with PowerPoint 2007 on XP. Note that the macro does not know the source (SP400 vs. keyboard) of the B or the Escape, so a B or Escape from the keyboard is also ignored.
For those with a technical bent, here are all of the keystrokes generated in presenter mode:
Button ScanCode, AutoHotKey, Keyboard key
Left SC148, VK_UP, Up (arrow)
Right SC150, VK_DOWN, Down (arrow)
Up SC149, VK_PRIOR, Page Up
Down SC151, VK_NEXT, Page Down
Mouse Left Click SC030, VK_B, B
Mouse Right Click alternates between (even if intervening button pressed):
SC03F, VK_F5, F5
SC001, VK_ESCAPE, Esc
