Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Sangean WFR-20 WiFi Internet Radio & Media Player

Customer Review: Excellent radio reception, operating system a bit complex
Summary: 3 Stars

this radio is perfect for people who like broadcast band radio, live in an area with poor over the air reception, and have broadband internet access via a private or public Wifi network.

The sound is superb.

The downside is that one does not "tune in " a station. One has to locate it via a variety of menus, and listen to it later.

Thus it takes weeks to locate stations that one wants to listen to, as one's favorite stations may not be available .

in addition, it takes about a minute to change from one station to another.

The operating system is very complex, and will only appeal to those who are good with computers.

easier to operate than a full featured short wave radio, and much better reception of broadcast band stations. no short wave or ham bands.

Customer Review: Disappointed
Summary: 2 Stars

I'm pretty disappointed by this radio. It was my second internet radio. The first one, a Tangent Quattro died after a couple of years. This one was the replacement. Although it has good sound, it's been completely unreliable as a clock radio. Since my bedroom is in the far corner of the house furthest from the wireless access point, every so often it fails to connect. The Tangent had the same problem, but would give me a pleasant little wake up cheep in the morning even when it couldn't connect. This one is silent when it can't connect in the morning. That makes it completely useless as a clock radio. After 3 months I replaced it with a Logitech internet radio which has only failed to connect once and which woke me up with a beeping noise instead. The Logitech is also a much smaller package on my little bedside table.

Customer Review: A very sound investment (sorry about the pun)
Summary: 5 Stars

I bought this radio to listen to UK radio (I am an expat living in the US): BBC, Talksport and Virgin (now Absolute) which are all available via the in-built reciva software.

Setting up is easy, sound is very good for a small unit.

The UI could be better but this does not really spoil my enjoyment of the radio.

My expectations were relatively low, I just wanted something more convenient than listening to the radio via my computer and this certainly has hit the spot. I just turn it on, select one of my presets and it starts playing within 5-10 seconds generally. I procrastinated quite a lot about buying this radio but I am very pleased I made the investment.

I can not comment on the other features such as receiving a station not included in the reciva network.

Customer Review: Wireless setup is flawed; No technical support.
Summary: 2 Stars

I purchased this radio about a year ago and thoroughly enjoyed it using a wired connection. However, when trying to set it up for wireless use, I found that it will connect on an unsecured network and also with WEP encryption. It will however not accept WPA encryption. It will only accept a WEP key. I emailed Sangean for assistance and received no response. I called them for assistance, but their representative was unable to resolve the issue. He took my name and number and assured me someone with more expertise would call back shortly. Again, no response. The inability to handle WPA encryption takes away the advantage of portability. Unless your home is wired for PC use, you're confined to having the radio next to your PC. Since you can connect to the same stations on your PC, who needs the WFR-20?

Customer Review: Make sure you have adequate bandwidth
Summary: 4 Stars

I live in a place with almost no regular AM reception and just one FM station so an internet radio or a computer are necessary for multiple radio station reception.

The Sangean was easy to set up and works well, for the most part. The Reciva system works fine but finding stations could be easier. Being able to listen to audio streams from around the world is fun and, I expect, much better and simpler than, say, a ham radio.

One problem is that my internet connection, a satellite, limits me to 17 gigahertz of download use. There are no DSL or Cable connections here. The radio has to be used judicially, (there is a sleep timer), or my connection is slowed by the provider when I apprach 17G. Don't try to run one of these on a data card with just 5 gigahertz of download use!
