Customer Review: great little radio. NOT great customer support.

I needed a radio that would get my favorite local radio stations, which I can no longer get here in the sticks (of NH), also because it seems classical music, alas, is no longer being transmitted widely, except on HD radio.
I chose to go this route because I can get ALL the best stations in the US and abroad with this radio.
That said, it took some doing to find and set up a router (went thru 3 routers) that would work. But work it does.
The radio is fairly easy to use, the instructions are clear, which is good, since as usual, the help phone number is nowhere to be found. The sound quality is excellent and the reciva.com website is fairly easy to use.
However, I cannot get my favorite podcasts to work. They cut out and stop altogether. When they restart, they start from the beginning. I cannot get the pause,fast forward or reverse to work, either on the radio or on the remote.
I wrote to Sangean asking for help and have received no reply.
I should have titled this review Great radio, LOUSY support.

I received this radio as a very thoughtful Xmas present. I have lived in the US for 30 years and one of the few things I still miss about the old country is BBC Radio4. Out of the box I could not get the radio to work at all. This turned out to be some kind of incompatibility with my Airport router & was solved by connecting the radio directly to the modem with an ethernet switch; OK but hardly wifi. The next problem was that the radio reported an error whenever I attempted to get the code to register with the web site that aids with programming and when it finally disclosed this code today the web site was non-operative. The list of programs available on the radio are irritatingly arranged with the US & UK at the bottom of long list - I would have thought that a majority of users would be in these two countries.
This said, the radio is solid & well constructed and the sound quality is excellent. Technical support staff are patient & helpful.And I have LOVED being able to listen to British radio again.

I will admit that I am a radio junkie, this radio has been the best find that I have run across. After several years of being an XM user, I decided it was time to let that go and try out the WIFI radios.
This Sangean gives you almost instant access to any station on the internet, you can find by genere, country or location. I do wish it had more than 12 memory slots but really it does ok, if you had more it would become harder to find your favorites without scrolling through a long list.
I have not tried hooking it up to the computer yet, but if you do you will be able to access all of your MP3 files. one day perhaps I will try that feature.
I would highly recommend this radio to anyone who is looking to expand their radio listening experience and to all XM and Syrius users who find they aren't using their radios for anything more than a in house radio which is what mine was.

I rated this 5 stars not because it is perfect, but because it works very very well for a first generation device. I guess since the Reciva system has been around a while it is not technically first generation, but it amazes me how well it does what it does.
I am a radio nut who truly mourned the loss of shortwave radio broadcasts as a way to travel the world in your imagination. Here is all of that good fun back in a format that sounds better than ever.
The integration of the Receiva website as the basis for programing favorite stations/ podcasts and the like works great. There is no way a simple radio display could do it this easily. Once programmed, you can access all of your favorites with a couple of touches.
I expect firmawre updates, and greater familiarity with the controls to make things even better. What a great toy!
Build quality and sound are what you would expect from Sangean, top rate.
Customer Review: Official Firmware Update Breaks This Radio

I received this radio today and absolutely loved it. It's magical, when it works.
Then I did the firmware update. I followed the instructions to the letter. And it bricked the whole radio. It gets into some crazy loop when it starts up and keeps trying to re-connect to my wireless network. Doing a hard reset on the radio let's me re-enter my network information, and everything works fine. Then it gets back into the crazy loop whenever I turn it off and back on again.
After I hit the forums I found out that this firmware update which causes all the problems was released at the beginning of November 2009. It's now the beginning of January 2010, and there's no fix available. Unacceptable.

I love this radio & wish that it worked as advertised. But I highly recommend that you read the forms and wait until Sangean fixes this problem before you buy this. Mine is going back to amazon first thing Monday morning.
