Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Sangean PR-D7 AM/FM Digital Rechargeable Portable RadioCustomer Review: Close to perfect Summary: 5 Stars
I've spent years looking for a portable radio this good! The Sangean PR-D7 does everything I need it to do. The reception is as good as the best radios I've owned, pulling in the underpowered community FM radio station in Pittsburgh (WYEP) from the fringe of the metropolitan area (Moon Township) with crystal clarity. Not many of my radios, and none of my portables, do that reliably. It also catches several AM stations whose reception is weak on my other radios. The sound quality is simply outstanding, head and shoulders above other portables and up there with many tabletop radios. Plenty of bass, but with clear highs - a real quality speaker! Battery life is great. I play the radio while getting ready in the mornings, probably about an hour a day, and it lasts a month or more before needing a charge. Speaking of charging, the built-in charger is an incredibly handy feature. I just plug the AC adapter in and let it charge for the day. No removing or replacing batteries, though you could if you needed to in a pinch. I even know when the batteries are getting low by reading the indicator. No surprises! Like most radios, you have to learn its quirks on how to set the frequency, alarms, etc. But overall, I could not be more pleased with this radio. The ONLY way they could improve it would be to include the weather band. Don't hesitate to buy this radio.
Customer Review: Incredible Radio Summary: 5 Stars
A month or so ago a Sony portable radio I purchased in Japan over thirty years ago finally died. It was a bit larger than the Sangean PR-D7. I searched the internet for a similar radio, found the Sangean and purchased it through Amazon for about $60. It is a fantastic radio for the use I want it for, listening to talk radio. I have it placed on the vanity while I shave or get ready for bed, and also I bring it into our very large shower area where I can place it so that I can hear it while taking a shower without getting it wet. (For music I have an outstanding Boston Acoustics clock radio by my bed, also purchased from Amazon.) Back to the Sangean. It was so easy to program and set up (using rechargeable batteries) that I did not even have to look at the instruction manual, and I am not a techno-geek, usually having difficulty answering my cell phone. The sound quality is more than adequate and all the radio stations (AM and FM) I have programmed come in very clear. It is attractive and well designed. Overall it is better than my old Sony, mainly because it is digital, making it simple to change stations. I highly recommend this radio and can think of nothing negative to say about it. Customer Review: Fantastic Radio Summary: 5 Stars
I was trying to replace my Sony ICF-M410 which is about the same size. I was extremely disappointed I could not find it as they discontinued this model and I was so happy with that radio. In searching for reviews of AM/FM small portable radios, I came upon this one. Not too many reviews (7) but I bought it anyway because I wanted a radio that ran on batteries. I could not be happier with this radio!! Superior in sound and reception to the Sony I had and a BIG PLUS is that you can use rechargable batteries (I have been using the eneloop) and charge them in the radio! Doesn't get any better than that and I LOVE having the option of using the electrical adapter (which comes with it) or use it with the batteries only. There is no weather band or tv band on this like the Sony, but I really mostly use the radio for AM reception and talk radio which is excellent (FM is also). I highly recommend this radio for anyone looking for a truly portable radio with great sound, reception and a compact size. I also love the volume knob and the display which has a lighted clock along with the channel. Oh, I forgot about the sleep timer too that I love. Hope this helps.
Customer Review: Runs on NiMH rechargeables Summary: 5 Stars
I use a portable radio a lot, and I hate throwing away exhausted AA alkaline batteries. But most radios perform poorly on NiMH rechargeables because of the lower voltage and because old-style NiMH batteries self-discharge in a few days or a couple of weeks to the point that they need recharging again. This radio can use NiMH batteries with no loss of performance due to lower voltage. I recommend Sanyo Eneloops because they self-discharge much more slowly than ordinary NiMH batteries.
One word of caution though. You can recharge the batteries using the provided plug-in adapter, but because the recharge will be in series the batteries will not be recharged individually. This works OK for one or two recharges, but then the batteries tend to get unbalanced -- some will be higher voltage than others -- and performance will suffer. You will also observe a loss of energy capacity (the need for recharge will become increasingly more frequent). If you recharge the NiMH batteries in a good charger like a Maha or a La Cross, however, the cells will be charged individually and there will be no observed loss of capacity.
Customer Review: great little radio Summary: 4 Stars
great looking little radio, great sound quality, great for talk radio and also music,60min sleep timer great little feature, also has alarm and wake timer, yes it charges its own batteries and also plays on non rechargeable batteries, you just have to make sure you set the little switch in the battery compartment to the type of battery you have in it, there is also a cool little feature, it seems to have a built in way of keeping the time on even when not plugged and no battery , somehow it still has a little reserved power to keep the time up on the LCD screen. The battery cover stays connected on hinges, signal reception is great pulls in stations with clarity my Sony has a hard time with, and it is loud enough a little louder than I expected it to be. Its however no pocket radio, looking forward to good listening for some time to come from this little fella, and if a power failure comes this way, like we have in south Florida from been in hurricane path, we will be ready, currently testing runtime on Duracell alkaline batteries to see how long this fella will keep on playing at room level volume.
