Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Sangean PR-D7 AM/FM Digital Rechargeable Portable RadioCustomer Review: Very good, with a few caveats Summary: 4 Stars
It looks as if it should cost about US$40. The sound is clear and at full volume fairly loud (with no distortion) -- useful when my hearing aids are out -- considering how small it is. What annoys me is the wall-wart power supply. With no batteries installed, unplugging it loses the current station and tunes the radio on power-up to the bottom of a band. If you leave it plugged in, the little thing's distinctly warm... probably a watt or two at most, but that's annoying. I ended up buying NiMH cells so that I need use the wall-wart only to recharge them. Sensitivity seems good, but I'm not listening to many FM stations over 30 miles away or AM stations over about 100. Daytime listening seems limited to about 120 miles for high-powered AM stations. (There are no jacks for external antennas.)
Battery life is good, but the battery clips are cheap: I knocked my radio off a kitchen counter and it landed right-side up, on its base -- bending half the negative-end prongs that keep the cells in place. (They're not proper springs but pieces of bent, slightly springy but too-soft metal, and those pointing upwards were bent almost double to temporary uselessness by the cells when the radio hit.) They're easily bent back into their proper shape, but for a radio this expensive, made by cheap labor in China, there's no excuse for not using proper springs. At least the radio seemed otherwise undamaged by the fall.
A carrying strap would have been useful. This is a table radio for me, but it's small and easily portable. The silvery metallic coating on one side of the tuning button began to wear off a few days after I got it, but it's gotten no worse since I noticed it. On the whole, a good radio.
Customer Review: It will suffice . . . Summary: 3 Stars
I received this as a gift from someone who knew I would use this for the purposes of travel, which I infer would be suitable for this "portable radio".
Pros:
-Decent to good build quality. I knocked it off the windowsill from almost a few feet above the hardwood and its fine--no rattles. Fit and finish is outstanding, but the glossy surface is less desirable in this application. Why not use something textured or rubberized instead?
-Rechargeable feature works fine with my Eneloops. I can play the radio ~ 8 hrs a day for a week before the batteries start to wear down.
-Pretty good sound quality to my untrained ear, and can get loud!
Cons:
-Awkward button design. The power button sticks out more than the others, which means the radio gets turned on and off in your pack. A low profile sliding toggle button mounted topside would work much better. Heck, all the buttons could have gone up there, to make room for a jumbo display. Also, the front mounted buttons make one-handed control of the radio impossible when it isn't standing against a wall.
-Reception isn't as great as the reviews indicated. I get better in my 08 Nissan truck.
-Feature set doesn't justify the price. Where is support for RDS, which is standard in Europe and Latin America (this is a travel radio right)? Some rubber feet would be nice. How about the ability to receive S.A.M.E. weather messages? And the AC adapter isn't even dual-voltage? Whiskey tango foxtrot?
I applaud Sangean for making a nice little unit that gives the Songbook a run for its money, but I still think there is room for improvement in this radio.
Customer Review: Absolutely Wonderful! Summary: 5 Stars
Okay, first, if you want a radio for stereo music listening, this might not be your best choice. It has a 3 inch speaker--NICE! But it's just one speaker. And Sangean is especially good for voice. I LOVE that, because I listen to songs to hear the words. Sangean is wonderful for that.
I have several other Sangean radios, and love them all. I have two that I carry around to have music with me as I walk and do things. It makes an amazing difference in my mood and movement. I am so very grateful for it.
I also have two shower radios, one in the shower on a high shelf that has worked great for a couple of years. The second one is newer, is in my study on an AC adaptor. It is aces, too.
I liked several things about this PR-7, in reading reviews and specs and thinking long and hard about buying it. It COMES with an AC adaptor that also charges rechargeable batteries inside the radio. I read up about the Sanyo rechargeable batteries, and decided they were the ones to buy. So I ordered them at the same time, and they arrived with the radio.
As advertised, they come precharged. So I put them in, switched the little inside switch in the battery compartment to "rechargeable," and began to set it.
The instructions are GREAT, clear and brief. First I set the time, and then I set the same stations I have set on my shower radios--quick and easy.
I have the radio with the antenna folded down, sitting on the desk about two feet from my desktop computer playing a not-extremely-strong FM station, and it is coming in clearly! HOORAY! I am so pleased!
Customer Review: Small, attractive, rechargeable, VG sound. AM Signal has static. Summary: 4 Stars
Update. I just reduced my rating from 5 stars to 4 stars.
The FM reception is superb. FM tuning is superb. However, I just don't get a static free signal on AM. At least not indoors. Static on all stations. Yet FM is superb. Don't know enough to explain why. Live within 8 miles of Dayton Ohio, a mid sized city, with many stations. Even the Cincinnati superstation, WLW 700 has static.
Wanted a radio for the house and yard that was easy to carry, had good sound, easy to use, and used inexpensive AA rechargeable batteries. This radio includes an AC plug/charger. Fits the bill. This is a very attractive radio.
I use Sanyo Eneloop batteries, and have used these batteries for several years.
The radio will actually recharge these batteries without removing them from the radio.
I did purchase a clear acrylic radio stand from Amazon for $ 7.99. Highly recommend this.
The manufacturer recommends a stand. Keeps it off grass in the yard, and from tipping over.
This radio will replace two larger radios with poorer sound. It will also replace a large Sony Boombox. The Sony is nice, but too big to carry around, and even for placement in most rooms.
Finally. I was planning to buy a logitech internet capable squeezebox radio. 25% of reviewers rated the logitech 3 stars or less. Considering the ratings, and the fact that the logitech wouldn't let me listen to my AM ball game station, and the cost difference, this radio seemed by far the more sensible buy.
Customer Review: Great radio, but where's the handle ???? Summary: 4 Stars
Great digital AM/FM radio........love the fact it uses rechargeable NiMh AA batteries that are charged internally, no more taking batteries in and out. With 6 AA NiMh batteries, this radio will run for several days under heavy use before a recharge is needed. Minor flaw.....you can listen to the radio with the AC adaptor, but it won't charge the NiMh's while the radio is on.........
Very well made radio, the digital tuning with station presets is very useful, as well as the "sleep" and alarm functions.....a very unique set of
I have two disappointments with this radio that keep it from being 5
1. Minor disappointment: this radio is very well made, but the white glossy color is just going to look bad in a few mine a matte black finish to hide those you never move your radio around, great....but I do.
2. Bigger disappointment: Where's THE HANDLE I love this radio, and I move it around a lot because I listen to ball games while I'm working my Honey Do list.......this otherwise really great radio cries for a little built in
Still, this is a unique AM/FM radio that I still recommend I'm glad I found it on Amazon, because I sure couldn't find this gem at a big box
