Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Sangean HDR-1 Table Top HD Radio ReceiverCustomer Review: Compact radio, too compact remote Summary: 4 Stars
My 96-year old friend was distressed at the loss of the two classical music FM stations in this area, and he asked me to help him get an HD radio, since he had heard that classical music was available there. I finally settled on the Sangean for him, because it is compact and nice looking. Here are some points:
1. It was necessary to unscrew the built-in FM aerial and replace it with the supplied dipole aerial. The built-in could not pull in the required station, although he lives quite close to the transmitter. After that it came in loud and clear.
2. AM reception is good for local stations, but a news station 80 miles away which is reasonable on many radios had too much static for use.
3. Set the clock and date by using the button on the front of the radio, twist to select, push to set. It is very clumsy to use the remote for this. Afterwards leave that button alone!
4. The remote is OK for a normally sighted person, but older persons will find it a challenge. They should offer a normal or even supersize remote as an option.
5. I do not plan to buy one for myself, but my friend is delighted, especially as the programming on the public radio HD station is excellent.
Customer Review: Just doesn't work well...major dissapointment. Summary: 2 Stars
Great looks and exceptional sound quality just aren't enough.
I've had this unit for 10 months. My biggest nits are:
1. HD reception is terrible: side by side to my neighbor's Boston Acoustics Receptor showed that I could marginally receive half the stations the BA was receiving. Maybe I have a bad receiver.
2. quality:
- this is my 2nd unit. The first had a defective AC jack on the back that wouldn't accept the power plug.
- The replacement has a shorted/open AM antenna connector that only works when held in place.
- the clock won't hold time...loses minutes every day.
3. User Interface: the remote works fine...simple to use but setup is a chore and I'm the only one in the house who can figure it out. Adding new stations to memory, setting the time and date are too painful.
I'm returning this to Sangean for warranty...I hope they get it right.
Great form factor, sound quality and I don't mind the remote and it looks great on the kitchen counter but they just didn't get the rest right.
Customer Review: Good sound and easy on the eye Summary: 4 Stars
The Sangean HDR-1 has great sound, and excellent fit and finish. I ran the radio through its paces and found it did pretty much everything it was supposed to, with one exception; I could not get a radio stations RSS feed to automatically update the time on my unit. If you need is for a handsome radio to fill a 150 sq ft room with high quality music/etc this unit is a good fit. In my area Washington DC, and the promised secret channels are more a smattering than a full on buffet of programming, but I think it's worth the premium. The quality of digital radio is rather good, the radio has a good `voting circuit' that switches between analog or digital depending on which is better.
As for AM, an old friend in the business said it best when stereo AM was all the rage; "great just what we need, two channels of static". The quality is there, but there are other problems with radio station coverage and interference patterns. Sangean spent their money on the FM tuner, and I think they got it right.
Customer Review: Single point of failure Summary: 2 Stars
Unfortunately, I can't recall dates and times, but I purchased this item as my first venture into HD radio from Amazon (at about $250). I was very pleased, being about 35/40 miles north of Denver. I received the few NPR stations that I used to listen to plus more (the text of the program, music cut, etc). Granted, I was not interested in CD quality music, and so cannot comment on that - I was interested in picking up some of the frequency/monetarily/politically shifting things going on here in Colorado. After about a year, the front LED(?) display quit working. Everything, tuning, display, re-programming depends on this display. Now all that visibility is gone. Everything that I programmed before still works just fine as before but I guess trying to re-program anything with a non-functioning display may be possible but is too challenging for me. I am, maybe foolishly ordering another HD unit (this time from Sony).
Customer Review: Excellent Radio Summary: 4 Stars
We bought this radio for my parents so they could listen to classical music from a local HD station. For this purpose they absolutely love the radio and couldn't be happier with it; my mother said she would rate it a 5 for it's intended purpose. However, she also said that they like to listen to AM in the morning, and this radio's reception for the AM station they like is not excellent, just average. The sound from her old radio was better for this AM station. She said she would rate it a 4 out of 5 as an overall radio for this reason. She also said that maybe if she moved it to the location of the old radio, the reception might be better. However, she's an older person and not super mobile, so she didn't want to move it. Overall it's an excellent radio and they love it; and maybe or maybe not the AM reception would be better if they moved it!
