Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Sangean RCR-22 AM/FM Atomic Clock Radio

Customer Review: Excellent Clock Radio
Summary: 4 Stars

This clock radio replaced a Proton unit that was generally very good but did not have a good dimmer for the display or presets for the radio. The Sangean works just right. I'm able to control the display brightness at the touch of a button and dim the radio to a very low setting (or no light if I wanted) so I'm not disturbed at night by the brightness. I'm also able to use the preset station buttons to switch stations, which I never wanted to do with a dial switching mechanism. The time kept by the atomic display is perfect and the radio maintains the time even if there is a short power outage. I also like the small footprint on the night table. Ease of operation has been cited by other reviewers as a problem. I found that if you read the instructions a few times and play with the radio features that it isn't that difficult to use all of the radio features. It does take just a little effort to do so but once learned it becomes intuitive to operate. Other reviewers were correct in that the AM reception is not ideal. That has generally been a problem in my area and continues to be subject to interference with this clock radio. FM reception is excellent. Overall, I'm very satisfied and may purchase this product for other rooms of my home.

Customer Review: Pretty solid, bad manual
Summary: 4 Stars

Good once it got up and running, but it took a while to get there. The first thing you should do upon opening the box is set your time zone using the switch on the underside of the clock. Then, plug it in and WAIT. I have started up the clock from scratch a couple of times now, and each time it has taken at least 5 mins for the atomic clock to register. This most recent time it took several hours. However, once it locks on it's there to stay, it seems. While it's searching for the signal the display freaks out, so don't worry.

Contrary to other reviews, you CAN change the brightness of the display using the knob on the underside of the clock, and you can toggle between the set brightness and full by pushing the light button.

The alarm and radio systems are great. The buzzer alarm ("humane waking system") is perfect for me because I have an early morning job and a partner who's a light sleeper. The alarm begins softly enough for me to wake up without disturbing my partner. The alarm scheduling is great because it means I don't have to worry about setting it M-F. The radio comes in loud and clear!

The manual stinks. Its step-by-step instructions are lacking greatly in detail, and in some cases it misses steps.

Customer Review: Good product but too bright
Summary: 4 Stars

I bought this as a replacement for a clock radio that had fairly bad reception. The reception is great (we live in a 'fringe' area and most radio don't do well). It has a lot of options though it is complicated and time consuming setting stuff up and it's not very intuitive. The sound quality is alright - it's not great but for the price I paid I am quite satisfied.

My least favorite thing about it is that it's SO bright. Even on the low light setting you could almost use it as a reading lamp (and that's from across the room). Aside from the blue lighting for the display being bright there are two very bright red indicators that show if the two alarms are set.

Also, even though it is very bright the contrast on the display isn't that good so even though it shines like a beacon from across the room it's still not that easy to read. It looks like instead of springing for a backlit dislay they used a standard display and just put a very bright LED at the right edge. I can understand the desire for cost savings (I would doubt they could offer it at this price point with a backlit display). Still, spending some time fine tuning the display contrast and display and alarm indicator brightness would have been appreciated.

Customer Review: Can't believe this clock got good reviews
Summary: 1 Stars

First, the manual is worthless. Doesn't tell you what all the parts are or where they go--although there are diagrams. Says things like "hold down the button for more than 4 seconds." The on/off button has a picture of a person in a be. To set the alarm, you have to follow the instructions exactly. And the instructions are less than clear--it doesn't tell you, for instance, that the clock relentlessly counting from 1-0 is what is supposed to happen when you set it. Nor does it tell you that it takes several minutes for it to find the signal. It's not intuitive or logical. If there's more than a one-hour power failure, you'll have to get the manual out again to set the alarm.

The display is either too bright to sleep with or too dim to see. It does pull in hard-to-get stations, but that's the only good thing about it. The sound is certainly that of a small plastic clock radio. Any other clock radio will do everything this one does better, except set itself to the correct time.

You have to want this clock--there's no way to set it up without ripping the plastic wrappings to get the parts out, and Amazon won't take it back without the wrappings in tact. If you buy it, it's yours.

Customer Review: Could be better so easily
Summary: 3 Stars

THE GOOD. The atomic clock works flawlessly even in Virginia, far away from Boulder, Colorado where the signal is coming from.

The radio is decent but not outstanding. Its reception is about the same as my previous cheap ($20) clock radio. The sound quality is OK from the monarual speaker and excellent when using stereo headphones. The existance of the headphones jack is a big advantage.

The volume control is analog but capable to regulate practically down to zero. That is really good.

COULD BE BETTER. Setting up the alarm is not intuitive. I had to go back to the manual multiple times and even now I am not sure how to get there. Have to try several times before I accidentally do it right. Otherwise I am a technical person.

THE BAD. Like many other reviewers already complained about the bright display I have to join them. A night clock should not have this enormous lit panel without the dimming ability. Instead of the whole background only the numbers should be lit.

The presence of the AM capabilty is useless for me. I wish they'd used the resources for better purposes.
