Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Sangean RCR-22 AM/FM Atomic Clock Radio

Customer Review: Atomic Clock Fails
Summary: 2 Stars

The Sangean RCR-22 AM/FM Atomic Clock Radio will not receive the time signal from the radio transmitter in Colorado. I followed the directions carefully, several times, and for several days, with no success.

I looked at the Sangean RCR-22 AM/FM Atomic Clock Radio discussions, for advice. I found that I seem to be doing everything correctly, but the atomic clock will not work. I own three other battery powered atomic clocks, and they all work fine. I wanted this feature on my clock radio, but this unit is a failure.

The other functions of the Sangean RCR-22 AM/FM Atomic Clock Radio are fine, if complicated. The reception is very good. Setting the time and the alarms are not too bad if I follow the instructions carefully. The sound quality is OK, too. In fact the Sangean RCR-22 AM/FM Atomic Clock Radio only seems mediocre when I compare it to the great radio that it replaces.

I have used a beautiful Panasonic clock radio for the past twenty years, and it had been excellent. The Panasonic was intuitive, convenient with great sound quality. I never opened the instructions, because all settings were fast and easy. However, I need to replace my old Panasonic as it will no longer hold a station. I get too much drift, to much noise as I move about the room, or even roll over in bed.

The Sangean holds frequency, and works fine, even if it is complicated. But no atomic clock. I feel cheated, disappointed.

Customer Review: "Great Clock! Serves It's Purpose!"
Summary: 4 Stars

After reading loads of reviews on Amazon.com, I decided to purchase the Sangean RCR-22 atomic clock radio. I've been using it for some months now and thoroughly enjoy it. It certainly serves its purpose for me! My biggest concern was buying a clock radio for my bedroom THAT KEPT CORRECT TIME. If your clock radio goes off too early or too late, what good is "beautiful sound" if you are cussing at the radio for waking you up at the wrong time?!?!?! I did not buy this clock radio with the idea that it would have superior sound quality. If I wanted superior sound quality in a table radio, I would have spent hundreds of dollars more for a Bose! Prior to this, I had an Emerson clock radio which had rich sound qualities with a deep bass. However, the LED clock in the radio NEVER kept the correct time! It didn't even come close! Within a week, the clock was running way too fast! For the same reasons, I have been wearing an atomic wrist watch for years, and I wouldn't buy any other watch, although there are a lot "prettier" watches out their that are more expensive but don't keep correct time. I found the Sangean RCR-22 easy to set up and use if you read the manual first. You can adjust the brightness of the blue-illuminated face with a switch that is somewhat "hidden" underneath the radio. All in all, the Sangean RCR-22 is a versatile clock radio that serves its purpose as an atomic clock device for my bedroom.

Customer Review: Just what I was looking for, but read Patrick's review!
Summary: 4 Stars

When the government changed the daylight savings time dates a couple years back, it rendered my "automatic" clock radio obsolete. I had to change it four times a year instead of zero, so I began to look for options. It took me a couple years of on and off looking to find this radio and based on Patrick's review, I bought it and I like it. Out of the box, the display is way too bright but you can dim it. The only problem with that is then you can't see it during the day unless press the button to brighten it again. Not a big deal. Mine found the radio signal it uses to set itself quickly with no problem.

The clock is very accurate and the the sound quality is quite good. It's a great choice if you're looking for a new clock radio that will adapt to whatever the government wants to do with daylight savings time -- it will set itself correctly based on the NIST clock in Denver.

One thing I haven't been able to figure out is how to stop it from changing to DST if you happened to live in a place, like Phoenix for example, that does not use DST. I've seen complaints from folks in Phoenix who couldn't stop it from switching, but I suspect this can be controlled. I just don't know how to do it and the manual really is not clear. I personally don't need to figure that out because I live in an area that does switch to DST.

I like the clock radio and recommend it to others.

Customer Review: Bright design dimmed by the display
Summary: 5 Stars

This is incredibly well thought out except for the display.

Plus's include:
+Size, sound quality and features are all outstanding.
+Quality feel of user interface. Most have a rubberized feel.
+Initial set-up is intimidating due to so many buttons (there are 18!)and a non-user friendly manual. Once the 2 alarms are programmed and atomic clock is synced you really only need the power button to turn off the alarm.
+FM Reception and sound quality far better than I've ever had in a clock radio.
+One other very well thought out feature is a switch on the bottom to easily set the time zone.
+Humane waking system with buzzer

Deltas include:
-The display? Yes its bright. There is a button (the one with a light bulb not to be confused with another with a sun icon for DST)to toggle between low & high brightness. On the bottom there is one more dial providing variable brightness - which my wife and I have had to tweak for several nights before finding something acceptable (too dim to read / too bright to sleep). Yes the blue back lit LCD looks more upscale than standard LED, but it comes with a trade off.
-The only other potential short coming is that there is no battery backup. It does have an internal capacitor which maintains power for approx one hour. I am a bit paranoid about an extended outage

Customer Review: This is a GREAT Clock Radio
Summary: 5 Stars

After having this radio for a little over a month I can really say that I don't miss my old trusty Sony radio of 20 some years.

I've only found two things that could be looked at as drawbacks. The first is the atomic clock does not work in Portland, OR. But I have NEVER found any atomic clock that does work in Portland so it's really not that big a deal.

Second, the brightness on the display is somewhat intense. The first night I used it I had to get up and change the brightness several times to keep turning it down. At the factory high setting the display could be used as a night light on the far side of the room or for reading close-up. I don't really think I'm exaggerating that much. After getting the instructions out and turning down the brightness setting on the bottom almost all the way, it works just fine.

Overall I like the radio very much. The sound is great for a small radio, the instructions are very clear and easy to use, it keeps very accurate time (compared to my watch and computer), and contrary to the pictures in the item display this is actually a small radio in size (smaller than my old Sony).

The other features like the snooze and sleep timers worked without a hitch.

Over all I would recommend this radio to anyone looking for a small, inexpensive, dual alarm with no reservations.
