Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Sangean MMR-77 Emergency AM / FM Portable RadioCustomer Review: Great tuner, rugged construction Summary: 5 Stars
I bought this as an emergency radio and for camping. I am pleased with the quality, the tuner is excellent, and it has a rugged case. It can be powered with batteries, with the crank and the built in rechargeable battery, or with an optional AC adapter. One side is rounded and this makes it easier to hold while cranking but it makes it more difficult to pack. It also has a led light built in, and emergency alarm. I like the light but the button is too easy to push accidentally. I am afraid that this will drain the batteries if I drop it in my backpack. The same is true for the emergency alarm. These are gimmicks and are not needed. I wish the push buttons could be replaced with a sliding switch so that you couldn't accidentally press the buttons. I am still going to give the radio 5 stars because of the quality tuner and good sound.
Customer Review: Worth its price Summary: 5 Stars
I bought this radio based on other recommendations, and I'm glad I did. The sound and reception are excellent, and because it can stand a humid environment, it's the perfect little radio for the bathroom. I haven't had to change batteries yet, so I don't know how long a set will last, but having a dual power source for extended power outages makes a big difference to those of us living along the Gulf coast.
Update (9.18.2010): I wrote the review above over a year ago. I'm still using the original set of batteries. That might be because I don't play the radio for long periods at a time, but even so, they do last. And the sound quality and reception remain excellent. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS RADIO.
Customer Review: Great design, reception, sound, and value Summary: 5 Stars
This radio's design is excellent - solid, well-crafted feel; easy to hold when cranking the dynamo; simple and useful controls; easy-to-read analog tuning dial. Reception on both bands is clean and very stable, and this radio locks in stations that other radios cannot. The sound is clear and full, much better than I expected from a small radio. A few minutes of cranking produces hours of listening, and I like buying fewer batteries. I originally envisioned this as a standby radio for emergency use, but I find myself using it around the house whever I want to listen to the radio. I heartily recommend the Sangean MMR-77 as a superb radio and a great value.
Customer Review: Sangean MMR-77 Summary: 5 Stars
I am a radio "nut"; I hold an amateur (Ham) radio Extra Class license. I have owned many radios (including several Sangeans) and this little "thingy" is probably the handiest AM/FM Receiver I have ever owned; I carry it around the house constantly to keep up with "talk radio" programs when I am not in the Ham Shack; I crave information and news.
The Analog tuning is not real sharp but sufficient
I am not a "tunes" guy, but the FM seems good and the audio good
It runs forever on two AA cells
The charger (crank) seems to work as advertised
Don't even try to find a better unit for fifty bucks!
Customer Review: An outstanding little radio. Great for emergency use, too. Summary: 5 Stars
This is a well-built little radio. It has the basic features that you want in an emergency.
For daily use, insert two AA batteries, and flip the dial on the back to "battery." In an emergency (when you don't have batteries), use the crank to charge the built-in "dynamo." At that time, turn the dial on the back from "battery" to "dynamo."
I bought this to replace a junky "Eton FR-350" that I found on Ebay. Don't even consider that radio. Struggling to open the battery compartment caused me to cut my finger on the sharp plastic.
