Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Sangean HDT-1X HD Radio Component TunerCustomer Review: Even better than the HDT-1! Summary: 5 Stars
The HDT-1 is an excellent tuner however being the initial offering from Sangean there were some annoyances like the display that could not be dimmed and no optical output. Well these two issues have been addressed in the HDT-1X! Other improvements like forced analog mode; split comparison between HD and analog signals; accurate time keeping; display that goes black when in the standby mode but you can push the INFO button and the time will come on and stay on for a few seconds. The sensitivity of the tuner is superb as I live almost 50 miles north of NYC. While I do not get all the HD stations, I pull in a fair number to cover the various music genres. I am most satisfied and I am not a teckie, but I know a quality item; as I said this is my second Sangean tuner and I am enjoying it! Buy it, but make sure you have a good FM antenna -- I am using an indoor whip antenna and a Magnum Signal Sleuth and I get HD stations -- imagine with a roof or attic antenna (I can't have either as I live in a townhouse). Of course if you live close to a large city like NYC you won't need any elaborate antenna!
Customer Review: Poorly constructed and doesn't work well Summary: 1 Stars
Avoid this product!
I bought this for my daughter and have had nothing but problems with it. First, it doesn't get good HD reception, despite adding a high-quality antenna. It switches between HD and analog, causing the song to jump back and forth due to the different delays between the two signals. It is unlistenable. Second, the optical output fails frequently, generating a huge amount of high-volume static. Resetting the unit, which takes a minute or so, fixes the problem most of the time, but not always (why does it even have a reset feature?). Third, the build quality is poor---lightweight, loose connectors, etc.
Bottom line: it doesn't hold a signal and is unreliable.
Addendum: Although I discovered the problem on day one, I thought the reset fixed it. I learned from my daughter yesterday that it did not, she has to reset it all of the time, and it sometimes doesn't work. Now, because we are three days outside of Amazon's 30-day return window, they refuse to give me a full refund. Very disappointing.
Customer Review: Very nice unit Summary: 5 Stars
Very nice unit. Software is more refined and it works and receives better than the Sony XDRF1HD HD Radio Tuner and doesn't overheat. You can punch in stations by frequency and it remembers favorite settings if power is off unlike the Sony. It does lose the time if power is off though. It receives slightly better on AM than the Sony due to having an RF amp at the AM input. It falls short on AM by having just a two connection terminal strip for the antenna input but you can make up an F connector by soldering two short pieces of wire to a connector and mounting it in the two terminals in order to connect the cable to an outside antenna. I found that an 8' CB whip on the roof works very well to receive AM and FM and will get all the HD stations from Phoenix 30 miles away in the daytime. It won't receive any AM stations in HD besides the Disney channel at night when they cut the power though.
Customer Review: Truly fine HD radio tuner Summary: 5 Stars
First I would like to say that this is a great radio tuner. Unfortunately, in my location, it didn't pull in HD stations as well as I had hoped. My favorite station is about 60 miles away across low coastal land (East Central Florida) and I was hoping to be able to pull in it's HD signal. This radio tuner, however, does do a better job than my A/V Receiver tuner, even in analog mode. I found the supplied dipole antenna to be best, better than even the C.Crane Reflect, which, in my experience, is not much use at all, and certainly not worth the price. My local Public Radio HD station has digital drop outs which I can't seen to figure out, except that it always seems to happen when an airplane goes over.
My recommendation is that you buy this radio for your component system to add HD, especially if you live within about 50 miles of your favorite stations.
Customer Review: Surprising results from tuner Summary: 5 Stars
I ordered the Sangean HDT-1X tuner somewhat on a gamble. Our location gets notoriously bad TV broadcast signals due to being near interfering hills. Most in the neighborhood have gone to cable or satellite. FM reception has never been great, either, so I wasn't sure how this tuner would work. After setting up with the antenna in the box and going through the station seek function, I was amazed by the signal clarity from both analog and digital. The "near CD quality" claim for digital is not overblown. I have also found it easy to use. High tech AND friendly.
The AM side of the story is not so great, but in this area, better fidelity for talk radio is not necessarily a plus. If the programming quality ever improves, I might have to look into better antenna solutions. But I'm not holding this against the tuner.
