Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Sandisk Sansa Clip 4 GB MP3 Player (Black)

Customer Review: Perfectly Amazing Player
Summary: 5 Stars

I've had the Clip for just under a year now, and I have absolutely no regrets, except maybe for not knowing that the Clip+ would come out soon after I bought it. For its price, it is my honest opinion that there is no mp3 player on the market that is a better value (besides, of course, the Clip+). Here's why:

1. The size.
The player is very compact, probably smaller than you're thinking it is if you haven't seen it in person. Still, all of the controls are very easy to get to, and it really doesn't fell cramped at all.

2. The screen.
This pushes the Clip miles ahead of its iPod counterpart, the Shuffle, simply because you can select which song you want, and can *quickly and easily* browse through albums, playlists, artists, genres, ratings, podcasts, and audiobooks.

3. The clip.
Don't underestimate this feature. If you plan on moving around with your player (very likely), you will be surprised by how useful a clip will become. I had originally figured that I would detatch the clip and just keep the player in my pocket. Instead, I simply clip the Clip to my pocket (lolz) and it's much easier to access. This turned out to be a major plus for me.

4. The sturdiness.
I treat my Clip pretty rough, I will admit. But I don't worry about it, because I know that my Clip can take the hits and still keep on clipping and pumping out tunes. I can't tell you how many times my headphones have gotten snagged and they get ripped out of my Clip, and yet the headphone jack shows no signs of quitting. I do use a silicone case, but it's mostly to fend off scratches and dings. I know that even if I took off the case and threw it at the wall across the room it would keep on playing.

5. The features.
Along with its great music capabilities, the player comes with several other features. Voice recording works great; it's clear and is sensitive enough to easily pick up my teacher's lecture from about half a room away. The FM radio works good, it picked up the big stations, though it missed a few with assumedly weak signals. Furthermore, it comes with a 5-band EQ with a bunch of presets, though it sounds great without the EQ. Also, with the most recent firmware it has replay gain capability, which makes all of your songs have the same volume.

5.5 The podcast/audiobook support
For any audio tracks tagged with Podcast/Audiobook for their genre, or placed into the Podcast/Audiobook folders, some extra features become available, the main one being bookmarking. When you leave a podcast or audiobook and come back to it later, it will give you the option to resume right where you left off. So you can listen to half of that new book, jump over to the radio and listen to NPR, play a few songs you like, and then come back right where you left off in the book. Also, it allows for faster and slower playback speeds, and of course, it keeps all of the podcasts and audiobooks out of the music area so you won't hear part of A Tale of Two Cities while you've got your music on random.

6. The ease-of-use.
The Clip works in both MSC and MTP mode. MSC means it's treated like any old flash drive, and and can just drag n' drop to transfer music. MTP also works with drag 'n drop, but you can also use a media player such as Windows Media Player or Winamp (my personal favorite is Media Jukebox) to syncronize with your Clip. No matter what your preferences are, you can find a method that works for you, and you're not tied into any specific software. Also note that any software that comes with the player is completely OPTIONAL, and not need to install or deal with at all.

7. The sound quality.
You can rest assured that you can plug in even high-end ($150+) headphones and the Clip will still sound great. You can read anywhere, they will tell you that the Clip has sound quality comparable to players four times its price.

And there are just a few things that are mostly neutral, or at least in my book:

1. The design
I think that the player looks pretty decent, but it's definitely not the coolest player on the block. Also, some people have problems with the headphone jack being next to the volume controls. If you have a really big plug, it might get a little in the way, but you should still be able to control the volume (you don't have to press the very top of the button to make the volume go up; a little bit above the middle will suffice).

Oh, and something very minor: The power and hold icons are painted on, and the paint can come off. The power icon has long been scratched off (more by my fidgeting than regular wear and tear) and the word "HOLD" has been turned into "OLD". I doubt anyone will care about this, but it's just something to note. At least the tiny serial number on the bottom doesn't appear to be removable.

2. The battery life
I haven't really tested it, but my Clip probably lasts somewhere around 8 hours. Compared to other players, that's pretty low. Most would list this as a con, but I'll explain why it isn't one to me:

First of all, the reason why I don't know my Clip's exact battery life is because it's NEVER died. I use my Clip constantly, probably an average of 2-3 hours a day, but I still don't have a problem with the battery. This is because I have access to a source of charging at almost any given time, through either a computer's USB, or through an wall or car outlet with an AC adapter. When I'm near my laptop, I plug in my Clip. Boom, 20-30 minutes of charging means an hour or two of music. Unless you literally listen to music for 8+ hours straight or don't have access to a charging source for an extended period of time, battery probably won't be as much of an issue as you think it will. Players having a battery life of 20+ hours is great, but you should really think to yourself on how much you plan to use it per day. If you're using it less than 5 hours a day, you can probably throw battery life out of consideration.

I really hope this review helped. I love my Clip, and am definitely completely satisfied with my purchase. I'd recommend of course the Clip+, because I know that you're not losing any functionality at all in the upgrade.
