Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Sandisk Extreme FireWire Reader

Customer Review: This reader is fast
Summary: 5 Stars

Using my old USB card reader it took 2 minutes and thirty seconds to transfer 110 mb of images into iPhoto. Using the same card it only took 30 seconds to transfer the same image files into iPhoto with this new firewire reader from Sandisk. If my math is correct (results are not guaranteed) I figure this reader will transfer 1 gb of images files to my computer in about ten minutes. As I generally shoot 200 to 300 RAW files at events I attend, I'm looking at downloads completed in minutes; not hours from now on. I am pleased with this reader and recommend it highly.

Customer Review: Firewire 800 - Not for Snow Leopard
Summary: 4 Stars

I have been using this card reader for 3 years now and it's always been reliable and fast. One of the saving features of this reader is that the cable unplugs from the unit, so you can switch between Firewire 400 / 800. Problem is Firewire 800 does not work in Snow Leopard! The 400 is fine, and is a huge leap from USB 2.0, but I've tried it on a few machines (Snow Leopard) with the same results. Reading some of the other Amazon reviews and poking around the interwebs, it's clear this unit has problems with the new OS's and FW 800. Great card but buyer beware!

Customer Review: Ideal investment.
Summary: 5 Stars

This product is lightning fast, and is just what any professional photographer needs. While is is true that if you are using WINDOWS, you most likely will not have Firewire 800, and so your transfer speeds will not be as fast as the 800, but this reader does supply both cords. The higher end macs will have both firewire 400 and 800, and with the 800, you will achieve transfer speeds of about 1GB/min. It's great to be able to pop in a new card, set this card to transferring, and keep on shooting, knowing that the card reader will be done in a matter of minutes.

Customer Review: Better but imperfect
Summary: 2 Stars

The reader is noticeably faster than my old Brand X USB reader. However it still does not reliably mount CompactFlash cards on the desktop. I often have to plug and unplug the reader several times before it's recognized by my MacBook.

The reader is packaged in ridiculously hard plastic that requires sharp scissors to cut. The plastic itself is sharp enough to injure you after it's been cut if you aren't careful. There's no excuse for using anti-shoplifting measures like that on a product sold by direct mail.

Customer Review: Speedy and easy
Summary: 5 Stars

I bought this to transfer images from a SanDisk Ultra CF card, since I much prefer plugging memory cards into a waiting reader instead of cabling cameras to the computer.

Using it with a Mac Pro, it's fast, and works fine daisy chained off another FireWire 800 hard drive.

The only downsides are: it's expensive, and it requires FireWire (duh) so no using it with the netbook I take while traveling.

Still, this does exactly what it's supposed to do.
