Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Sandisk Extreme FireWire Reader

Customer Review: Very fast image transfers
Summary: 5 Stars

This CF reader is well worth the money if you pair it with SanDisk's Extreme IV CF cards. How fast is it? I shot 139 RAW images on my Canon 20D onto an 4GB SanDisk Extreme IV CF card. The images average 8 MB per file for a total of 1.04 GB. I used this Extreme Firewire CF reader connected to a 1394a port on a desktop PC running Windows Vista. The card reader took just 42 seconds using Adobe Bridge to load the images. That is a transfer rate of 26.7 MB/sec. That is more than 2X faster than using the SanDisk Ultra II cards or using the Extreme IV card on my USB CF reader. The load was so fast, I could barely make out the thumbnail images as they flashed by in the Adobe Bridge loader pop-up dialog. By the way, installation was a snap. I just plugged it in and it was ready to go. I'm very happy with this purchase. Highly recommended.

All the other bad reviews are true. The FireWire reader has to have 6 or 9-pin ports that are powered to work.

I am a proffesional photographer and only trust and use Sandisk III or IV CF cards. I could not get thereader to work on my new Dell. 4-pin firewire ports are the industry standard. Why would Sandisk put out a product that most computers cant use. I bought a PC Card 800 with 800 firewire, but it only works if you plug the pc card into an external power source. Way to many things to bring on the road. Way to many possibilities of things getting broken whne you need them both.

I spent a few days researching on how to get the reader to work and lost money for the time wasted.

Amazon sent me 2 of these readers by mistake (and charged me). I am willing to sell them both.

Customer Review: It truly IS extreme
Summary: 5 Stars

Now THIS is an upgrade! After getting a new digital camera I had been using the USB cable to transfer images to my Mac G4 MDD. I knew it would be slow, but what the hey. With the USB cable I was getting about 750-800Kb per second transfer rate. With the Sandisk Extreme reader I now get 33MB per second! YEEOWZA! This thing flies like the wind! 400MB of files blasted onto the hard drive in seconds! It was so fast I had to laugh like a madman. What more could you ask for, you plug the thing it, it mounts right up; no software to install or anything (not sure about the Windows world, though) and it copies files off the card like greased lightning. If you are impatient and\or value your time this little thing gets the job done. Your progress bars will actually make progress!

Customer Review: In Search of The Perfect CF Card Reader...
Summary: 5 Stars

I had owned about 4 cheap USB card readers prior to purchasing this little guy here. All of them eventually perished after limited amounts of use. The metal prongs inside the things would always end up bending due to the way that the CF cards would loosely slide into the units.

That certainly isnt an issue with this sandisk reader. The slot is cut to the exact size of the CF card and after about 2 years of use it still works as if I just got it in the mail from Amazon.

Another perk is the fact that its firewire and that means its fast. Much faster than my old USB style readers and faster than my cameras as well....

If you are in the market for a great CF card reader, you cant go wrong with this one here....

Customer Review: Fast & Reliable
Summary: 5 Stars

I searched for fastest reliable CF card reader to transfer images from Nikon D700 camera to PC. I have lost several typical card readers. Mechanically they appear like new, but electronics or connections fail, and they are slow being limited to USB transfer rates. The Sandisk FireWire 800/400 unit meets all expectations. With rubberized bottom pad to help the card reader stay in place (i.e., slick desk surface) the supplied 800-to-800 & 800-to-400 fire-wire connector versatility, solid construction & high transfer speed; this unit will be hard to beat.
