Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of SanDisk Sansa m240 1 GB MP3 Player (Silver)

Customer Review: Annoying, but okay
Summary: 3 Stars

First, let me say that I just received this product and have been using it for only a few hours. It plays songs and podcasts just fine, the volume is good, and the player functions fine. I like the screen and the easy-to-use menus. I bought the m240 because I won't use it much, I'm going on a trip to Europe and I don't want to have to buy a converter just to charge it, and I didn't want to spend $200 to get an equivalent iPod. For what I'm going to use it for, I think the m240 was a good buy.

Now for the down side. The product info says that the m240 will only work with XP. This isn't true. In fact, I still can't get it to work on my XP (SP2) laptop. I plug it in, it "rebuilds the library," then shuts off, and won't power back on. It turns on fine when not connected to the computer, but it won't work at all when connected--and yes, I do have the latest firmware update. On top of that, the product comes with an "Easy Start CD"--HAH! It won't run on my Windows 2000 desktop at all (which I expected, given that the product info says XP only), but when I put it in my XP laptop, it says I need the newer version of the CD (I just bought the thing!) and asks if I would like to be taken to the web page to get it. I click yes, and it takes me to--the Windows Media download page! I'm already using the newest WM player, and why a Sandisk product would send me to a Microsoft site for updates to its software is beyond me. Needless to say, I've given up trying to use it on my XP laptop.

Right now, I have it attached to my 2000 desktop, transferring files through Windows Explorer, and it's working fine. Go figure.

So this is a good little player, when you can actually get files on it. I really think the people at SanDisk need to get their act together and make sure their products actually work like they're supposed to.

Customer Review: Impressive, Best Value MP3 player and Great Radio... Worth a look
Summary: 5 Stars

I got this model last summer for my pre-teen son. I didnt want to spend too much since I was not sure how well he would take care of it. I have used it several times and must admit I like it as much or better than my higher end 2GB Sansa e250 with video screen, and/or my sister's ipod nano.

If you're all about function, this is great... Its nice and simple, the organization of songs and navigation is straightforward and easy to use. Also, the FM tuner is great. I can barely get reception on any radio in the rural area I am in... This one comes in crystal clear.

Personally, I mainly want to listen to mp3's and/or an FM radio, and this definately works great for both. This one is much simpler than my Sansa e250 (which I paid twice as much for) and my previous, now dead, older model creative zen that was a technical difficulty nightmare. Although a bigger color screen on the e250 is pretty to look at, I have yet to use the video function;and navigating through all the buttons, screens and options can sometimes be a pain when I just want to find a song.

Overall, this one is great if you like simplicity. On the other hand... If you are looking for a good recorder, video screen with capability to watch videos, etc., and dont mind taking the time to figure things out- you may want to consider the e250. Ipod nano has higher price, doesn't have the FM tuner(or the option to download video like the sansa e250)but has some definate compatiblity advantages. If the functions on this one meets your needs, you won't be disappointed with this model (sansa M240).

One more thing.. Shop around or check back on amazon frequently for the best price. I think I paid $54.99, but have noticed it jumps from as low as 39.99 to over $70.00. Good luck...

Customer Review: great value, good quality mp3 player!
Summary: 5 Stars

I also have a Creative Zen Micro, but wanted a flash player to toss around at the gym. I received it today, and the M240 seems to be great value for the money. It took a bit of fiddling with controls to become comfortable with the menus, but the menus are fairly clear and you can find what you're looking for.
The FM radio has decent reception, picking up stronger stations clearly while sometimes receiving the weaker ones. 20 presets that you can flip through with the touch of a button is a great feature. The length of the backlight is adjustable, as is the contrast. The sound quality is great, and I found the included earbuds to be comfortable and decent, although worthwhile to upgrade.
I was able to easily sync the player with Windows Media Player and the newest version of WinAmp to initially load songs, although I had to manually delete them from the player. I love that you can drag-and-drop songs onto the player as well as sync it. Other reviews said that the player was not capable of playlists- it seems that the newest ones might have upgraded firmware (mine shipped with 3.2.8A), and the player also sorts with genre, artist, album, and title. Be warned that the only firmware available on SanDisk's site is an old version, and seems that it hasn't been updated in awhile.
Physically, the player seems decently made, a quality that I would expect for this type of player- it's not steel, but will withstand some drops. The case is made of a clear plastic that fits well and the armband is elastic and velcro- not top quality, but a nice feature that will accomplish its job. There is a space to attach a lanyard, although it's not included.
Overall, the M240 is a product I would definitely recommend- great value, good accessories, and nice features.

Customer Review: There seems to be a software problem
Summary: 1 Stars

At first glance, this appears to be a good product. However, as soon as I start using it, a serious problem surfaced.

It seems that after 20 minutes into a track (any track), the fast forwarding button no longer functions. You press the >> button, the time counter starts to advance (as expected). But when you release the button, the player skips to the next track. The player works properly at the beginning of the track, but the problem starts after about 20 minutes into the track. Therefore, it seems to me a software problem, which won't be resolved by exchanging with a different unit of the same model.

I contacted the technical support of SanDisk. I received a response telling me, in no uncertain terms, that I should format the disk and that should solve the issue. I spent about an hour figuring out how to do that, and perfomed the task. However, the problem is still there. I reported the results back. Then within an hour I received an Email telling me a new response was available. I checked the site, found no new responses. So I left a request again, reporting the problem with this Email notification. So far (48 hours passed), I have not received any response. It seems I will return the unit to Amazon after New Year, if I cannot resolve the problem by then.

Another strange thing: I cannot find any information about warrantee, either on the package/manual, or on SanDisk website. When I asked about warrantee information on their support site, the response was that I need to provide model number (I already registered my product with serial number, etc.). Right now I don't bother about that, since I will return it to Amazon. But you might want to check out the warrantee issue if you are considering the product.

Customer Review: Fantastic mp3 player for gym rats!
Summary: 5 Stars

I bought the Sansa SanDisk M240 2 months ago and I've been very pleased with the purchase. Here are all the reasons I bought it and like it:

-I needed an mp3 player to use during workouts (both at the gym and runs/walks outside). It comes with an adjustable elastic arm band and a plastic protective sheath for use with or without the armband. This unit is perfect for working out.
-Reasonably priced (around $75)
-Large-ish capacity (1GB) flash drive which also functions as a jump drive to store non music files on as long as you have your usb cord with you
-Runs on 1 AAA battery (!!!) (they say 16 hours of play time and that's about right)
-Features an FM radio
-Hold switch to keep unit on or off
-It's small, lightweight, and quite attractive.
-The display is easy to read.
-It has a microphone but I have never used it so I can't comment on that function.
-Comes with headphones that are probably the best of the 3 pairs I own
-Simple drag and drop file transfer to load/unload music (but not compatible with Windows 98)

The only issue I had was on the first day that I got it, it wouldn't let me drop more than 125 songs on the player. When I called customer service they immediately suggested that I create a folder on the player and drop the files into the folder (instead of directly onto the drive). That solved my problem and I was able to load up almost a full 1GB of music onto it. I was impressed with how knowledgeable and helpful their customer service was.

May I suggest that you buy a set of rechargeable AAA batteries and a charging unit (I like Rayovac) to help save our planet?

I would buy this product again in a heartbeat.
