This player appears to be a good starter for my 6 year old. It is a great size and has pretty good sound. The speaker is great and a nice alternative to headphones. I also like how easy it is to load music (no special software, you just rip a CD to your computer and then drag the songs from the folder to your device). What I do NOT like is how the end cap keeps falling open to expose the SD card and battery compartment, and it's not like I can tape it shut because it is attached to the part you twist to advance to the next song. I haven't tried the earbuds that came with it since I don't like in-ear phones for my kids. If I were to choose again, I would probably get her the thumb sized Coby MP3 I got my 8 year old.Customer Review: Cute, durable, battery killer - MUCH cheaper elsewhere.

I bought this about three years ago from Toys R Us for $15. It's a great little MP3 player. The built-in speaker makes it nice for my two kids to share or even for just one of them to put on a shelf while playing. It requires a pretty good jolt to change songs via the shaking feature. My 6 year old couldn't really get it. It runs on a single AAA battery, but you'll be lucky to get 12 hours out of that battery.
I'd say I got my money's worth as I'm only now considering replacing it. Three years later, the thing just doesn't stay on - even with a new battery. I recently saw this at Toys R Us on clearance for $9.99. I don't know where Amazon gets off selling this for nearly $60.

I purchased this mp3 player for my 5 year old Grandson. He absolutely loves it! He was really wanting one for Christmas, but I was worried about the small size of most players. This MP3 player was perfect for him. Small enough so he can carry it in his pocket and large enough for him to easily keep track of it. Also, I was worried about purchasing an expensive gift which he could easily destroy. Not so in this case. The price was great and he has dropped it several times and it just keeps playing. The only negative thing I have to say is that the ear plugs were too large for him. We had to purchase separte one for his ears, but they would probably be alright for an older child.Customer Review: Fantastic!

This player is great! It's the only one I've seen that has its own external speaker, which was a must for me. It's exceptionally easy to use, ultra-portable, and the sound quality is better than I expected. I took it out of the package, stuck in the battery, and plugged it into my computer to transfer some songs. Three minutes after unwrapping this thing it was playing my music - can't beat that! I know it says it's for kids 8 and up, but I loaded it with Raffi tunes and handed it over to my 8-month-old. He absolutely adores it! We'll see how well it holds up to baby slobber...regardless, at under $40 this thing is a steal. I might order another one now to have in reserve!Customer Review: Kids love it

My kids love this product, its a fun shape and its just for them. I love the fact they can hear their music without headphone which is one more thing for me to lug around and worry about it damaging ears, etc. but the sound is good for what it is. I would not hesitate to get one for myself if I didn't already have an MP3. Also the amount of memory you purchase can be changed at any time with the replacement of the SD card. I bought the 512mb but we put in a 2gb card and viola alot of music, although for the littler kids it's easier for them to find their favorites when there is less on the card. It is rated 8 and up but my 3 year old is able to use it properly.
