Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of SanDisk Sansa Express 2 GB MP3 Player (Black)

Customer Review: On your own risk
Summary: 2 Stars

I use to put just whole albums in my 30Gb iPod ("Classic" iPod nowdays) so i was looking for a device to put singles and "one hit wonders". First i think to get an iPod Shuffle but then there was the Sansa with 2Gb (enough for my interest) and specially the FM tuner and recording options (also i was thinking use it to record some radio shows that i cannot attend when they go live) so i get one. How is doing this thing? Regular, very close to bad. I've been using the Sansa for a month and in a couple of times the thing just hang out, i mean it doesn't respond to any key and i have to wait until the battery goes down.

Pros (when the Sansa works):
- FM tuner and voice recording feature.
- Files transfer is simple. Just copy the files as you do in Windows.
- Light and fancy design.
- Equalizer presets (they make a real difference in the sound quality).
- Expandable storage capacity.

Cons:
- The menu/interface is confuse.
- The radio tuner is good when you listen live radio, but every show that i record there was a noise, some kind of interference, no big deal but a little bit annoying.
- The shuffle option is not very intelligent; it can repeat 2 or 3 songs when there are 20 songs that have not been played yet.
- Rechargable only trough USB ports.
- Not reliable.

Maybe i got a defective unit, i don't know but i don't recommend this thing, specially if it will be you main player (maybe could be a backup or secondary player). If you don't need FM tuner or voice record go for an iPod Shuffle, no doubt. Otherwise, get a Sansa on your own risk.

Last minute update: Yesterday the "Sansa Updater" program detect a new firmware version so i download and install it (you have to format the unit in order to update the firmaware, can you believe this?!!). After the update i let the Sansa plug to the computer to charge the battery. A few hours later i want to use the Sansa, it turn on for a minute, and then suddenly dies. At this moment the Sansa doesn't turn on. I plug it to the computer and still remains dead. Crappy.

Very Last Minute Update: The Sansa come back to live. After a couple of hours i check the user guide and applied a "hard reset", after that the Sansa just turn on and is working now. What happend? I have no idea.

Customer Review: Excellent value, nearly flawless
Summary: 4 Stars

It would be very difficult, if not impossible, to find a better mp3 player in this price range.

Having the USB connector was the first feature I looked for as it makes transferring files much easier.
The internal battery is charged while the player is plugged into the USB port of a computer, which I did not realize until after I had ordered it. The previous player I had used 1 AAA battery and I was able to use it for several days on a single battery. For me, it seems that I can only use this for one day and part of another on a full charge but I know that skipping through tracks and playing with features is far more draining. I'm betting that if you just let the tracks play it probably will give much better battery life. Of course, at the end of the day I just plug it in and the next morning it's charged and ready anyhow.

The player is very small, so portability is excellent. The expansion slot is neatly placed under the earphone jack, and takes mini-SD cards. I have a 2GB card in mine, so immediately I doubled the capacity which is nice because it's a decent price jump to the 4GB+ players. Another great feature is the FM tuner, with impressive reception and a good amount of presets. The sound quality on this player is good, but that's not something you can rate a player on being that the earphones will deliver the sound.

**I have a pair of the A4 Tech MK650 metallic earphones and they are among the best I've ever heard. They compliment this player well, as they are both very portable.**

There are plenty of features that make this player great, but ease of use is really what I enjoy most.
The controls are simple, laid out well, and easy to navigate through. I would highly recommend this player for anyone who enjoys good sound and likes the ability to easily transfer files to and from the player. There is also a voice recorder and you can record segments from radio as well.

The only thing that this player is lacking is the ability to browse folders or play only music from certain folders, unless I just haven't figured that out yet. Navigating through 400 songs takes a long time and I've yet to figure out in which order songs are placed or why so being able to only play songs from a folder I choose would be great.

Customer Review: Fantastic little mp3 player
Summary: 5 Stars

I bought this little player to use in my car to listen to audiobooks. I used to use a 5th gen iPod which I gave to my husband after I got an iPhone. It quickly became apparent that it was dangerous to use the iPhone as an mp3 player in the car since you can't even pause w/o looking at the screen. This little player filled in nicely. I've had it for about 4 months now and I'm very satisfied.

Pros:
1. Very compact and lightweight.
2. Doesn't require any special cradles, it plugs into any USB port. I've never had any problems in picking it up from other computers. (Very convenient for charging as well)
3. I don't need to look at it in order to pause or forward when driving.
4. Good sound for audiobooks. (The few times I've used it to listen to music it sounded descent as well).
5. Inexpensive. My husband thought I should buy an iPod nano or shuffle. But, both would be a lot more expensive, and the shuffle doesn't even have a screen (so I wouldn't know where I left off in an audiobook).
6. When you pause playing, after a while (~0.5 min) it turns off to save power. Next time, it resumes from the beginning of the track where you left off. So this is quite useful for audiobooks.
7. Doesn't feel incredibly fragile. I wouldn't be afraid of leaving this in my car, unlike an iPod or iPhone (if the weather wasn't too extreme).
8. Radio tuner
9. Micro SD slot (I only just got a card & haven't used it yet, so I don't know how well/conveniently it works)
10. You can record voice notes
11. Menu system on device strait-forward & easy to use

Cons:
1. Windows media is not as easy to use as iTunes. So, syncing is a little harder.
2. Shuts off too quickly. I haven't seen any options for changing this.

All in all, this is a great, handy little player. I would definitely recommend!

Customer Review: SanDisk Sansa Express 2Gb
Summary: 4 Stars

I bought this item with a little trepidation having read very mixed reviews of the product. In the end I decided to buy it on the basis that I was looking for an MP3 player that is easy to use, compact and doesn't require any additional leads etc (which can easily be lost/forgotten). This seemed to be the only unit that satisfied this for my budget range (<$50).

I've had the unit one month so far. I should point-out that I am not an intensive user of MP3s and perhaps use mine around 2 times per week.

So far I have found it to work pretty well. It looks nice and the battery life seems fine. I used it on several long-haul flights and it seemed to last fine (the ear-plugs feel a bit unconfortable after an hour or so).

The unit has crashed on me few times (poor software I guess) but was quick to re-boot after pressing the reset button, ie. it did't particularly bother me. I haven't upgraded the firmware.

The unit seems to work well with MS Media Player - it seemed to auto-detect and worked seamlessly. I haven't bought an expansion memory card yet so can't comment on that.

The pros and cons of this unit are:

Pros:

* Cheap
* Looks good
* Compact
* Simple to use - no leads to forget/lose
* Has a radio that works!

Cons:

* Sometimes stalls (but comes back to life after a reset)
* the wiring is a bit messy - a problem shared by other units
* sound sometimes a little hissy
* menu sometimes seems a little awkward to navigate (minor complaint)
* Earphones a little uncomfortable (probably best to buy nicer ones if you plan to use it a lot)

Overall, this unit works (so far) well for me, but I'm not a big user. Keep that in mind when reading this.

Customer Review: Basically a suped up version of the sansa m series
Summary: 4 Stars

Basically this Mp3 is a suped up version of the sansa m series.

Pros (?):
Slim and sexy look.
You can see yourself on that faceplate.
OLED Screen.
Very light.
Very good sound quality.
Amusing Dino

Cons:
USB Charging only (I haven't check for products that'll charge it w/o a computer yet 08/07)
Easily smugable (fingerprint prone)
No info of bitrate of a file on the bottom like the m series (But I think that'll be fixed in a future firmware update).
Easily ejectable microsd card. (Better buy that toughskin accessory)
OLED screen not really visible outside on full brightness.

Other Thoughts:
This Mp3 has a weird Graphic EQ. Only 5 bars. Leftmost being the bass and rightmost being the treble.
When you turn a bar up, basically the Mp3 will just lower the sounds from other ranges of the sound spectrum.
Solution:
Just jack up all 5 bars by 3 times and then set your EQ preference.

Lousy shuffling
Solution:
Repeat All and then shuffle.

Pretty good so far.

I wouldn't recommend the c series normally b/c I do not find it a plus to have photo viewing on a ridiculously small screen.

The dino is amusing to watch.

Ipods have the best interface.
The sansa seems easy to get lost in for the average person.

The dino is amusing to watch...

SanDisk should animate it more.

Opps, that dino is a dog
