Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of SanDisk Sansa Clip 4 GB MP3 Player (Silver)

Customer Review: An mp3 player for people who aren't jerks
Summary: 4 Stars

The Sansa Clip Silver is a great all-around mp3 player, and a great value at this price. I was waiting a long time since they first announced it to get one, and ordered it the second it became available.

I've been using it to work out at the gym for weeks now, and I like it a lot.

Pros:
+ Simplicity - you don't have to deal with installing any proprietary software like iTunes. Just drag and drop, like the rest of the sansa mp3 players.
+ 4GB of storage provides plenty of space for music.
+ Features - has an FM tuner and voice recorder, which are convenient if you need them
+ Very light - clip it to clothing, put it in a pocket, or carry it with no problem
+ Good battery life

Cons:
- As mentioned in another review, the shiny faceplate looks good, but it's almost impossible to read in the sunlight because of the reflection. Since I mainly use it to work out indoors, it isn't too much of an issue for me.
- The placement of the hold slider and volume rocker is a little awkward at times because it's so small. Because of this, I need to use two hands to turn it on/off.
- The included earbuds sound okay, but the wiring doesn't have a thick plastic coating like iPod earbuds so they get tangled more easily

Overall, the Sansa Clip Silver is a good-looking, simple mp3 player. It does everything an mp3 player should do, no more, no less. As an added bonus, and the best thing about it, it doesn't the pretentious aura of an iPod. An mp3 player for people with nothing to prove.

Customer Review: Great iPod Shuffle Alternative and Awesome DAP!
Summary: 5 Stars

I'm a survivor of two RCA Lyra Micro Jukeboxes. They both were good for their time (less than a year), but it was time to move on. I've always admired the SanDisk Sansa Clip from afar, like a pretty girl I was too shy to talk to.

However, I found an incredible deal at Buy.com which allowed me, through Google Checkout, ten dollars off the price. I ended paying only $61 for my 4GB Clip. After dealing with the ineptitude of UPS, I got my silver beauty after eight days of desparate waiting and tooth-gnashing.

The Clip is an incredible digital audio player, with amazing sound for its tiny size. After perusing the official SanDisk forums, I discovered that the Clip catalogues music (in my case, mp3s) by ID tags, I used the fine freeware program MP3Tag to re-tag all of my music files. After getting my Clip, I dragged and dropped on to the player, and I don't even use playlists. I just use the "Album" and "Artist" categories to play my mp3s.

I would recommend getting other headphones, as the included earbuds aren't all that great. I'm using Sony Psyc Stereo clip-on headphones. I'm carrying the Clip and my headphones in a brand new Case Logic digital camera case I got from Wal-Mart.

I'd also recommend a silicone case to protect the Clip not just from scratches and dings, but from smudges, smears, and fingerprints. I got one from eforcity on eBay.

All in all, the 4GB Clip is an awesome DAP and a great alternative to the iPod shuffle and most of the other more expensive mp3 players out there.

Customer Review: The SANSA Clip Dead in 24 hours!
Summary: 2 Stars

I just got this SansaClip model from Amazon yesterday and today it stop working, it won't even turn on, it is dead like that dead parrot from Monty Python. I didn't do anything retarded to it, just plugged it into my computer usb port and it frooze my Mac and then it died. RIP Sansa lemon, you shall be returned to your dark masters. Pity, it look so pretty and stunk so badly, like a blind date.

There is no mention anywhere that this player is incompatible with Macs but I suspect it has some "issues" with both platforms, it is all over the Internet: "my Sansa won't start up" "my Sansa is dead", "can't reformat my Sansa", etc. Google before you buy.

I tried for 24 hours before it died and I can at least say that this Sansa Mp3 player belongs to another era, it has all of the same problems that I notice on my first Mp3 from six years ago (pre-iPod era), except my old one never crashed! I can't believe how outdated this Sansa Clip is. Still not compatible with Macintosh Audible Manager, so you can't listen to your Audiobooks unless you have a Windows PC. And the sound is not as good as other people claim in their rave reviews, in fact, it actually suck a little not much. If you are not an expert programmer forget about this player, its operation is highly complex, you will spend more time hacking into it than listening to your music and there are no real instructions to guide the rookies. I would change the rating to minus zero if I could. But you still wanna buy it because it's cheap and cute, don't you...so it goes.

Customer Review: The Go-Everywhere Music Player
Summary: 5 Stars

If you are looking for the perfect go anywhere music player that plays a wide range of music formats this is the one to buy. And it's extremely lightweight, cool looking (the silver one particularly), and has great sound. The battery life is excellent. It plays Audible files for those who subscribe the audio books section. I do, and I was looking for a player that could handle those. It has a surprisingly good FM receiver built into this tiny player which is a plus. The display gives you just the right amount of information, not too much, not too little -- just like poridge.

Note: the Clip plays music only, so if you need video also I recommend the Creative ZEN as a best value Multimedia Player (I have one of those too). But it's bigger and I don't take it everywhere. I do take the Clip everywhere.

I got a 4GB version in silver from Amazon for $34. That's just impossible to beat. So cheap that you don't have to worry about taking it to the beach or anywhere else. If it gets lost or stolen you aren't in a funk, you just get another one. The only downside may be it's size, it's tiny and light so you have to remember you have it in your pocket. Oh, and get a decent set of earbuds. I recommend the Sennheiser noise-isolation CX 300's. Great sound and very comfortable.

Buy it, you won't be sorry. Consider the silver one, it looks very high tech and cool when the perfectly flat front lights up with the display that is invisible when off. I know, sounds weird, but take my word for it.

Customer Review: Perfect for me
Summary: 5 Stars

I made this purchase with a lot of hesitation - replacing my old iRiver that I've gotten very accustomed to. Here's why I am thrilled with my purchase after a week:
* Small size - I can conveniently clip it on and carry it around and save my phone battery for phone stuff without carrying 2 bulky devices
* Ease of navigation
* Standard USB connection - no proprietary cable required
* Mass Storage - connects as an external drive, so I can directly copy files without other software or "service"
* Good sound - volume loud enough for use on noisy train

a few weeks later - found that I like it even more:
* remembers where I left off on podcast and audiobook tracks even I switch and listen to something else - gives me the option to resume or start over
* leaving shuffle turned on for music does not shuffle podcasts and audiobooks
* delete files directly from device
* the clip - it's simple, easy and it works - I clip it on a belt loop, edge of a pocket, shirt placket, etc.

a couple minor things that could be improved:
* the included headphones are not very good, but I already have a high-quality pair
* even with brightness at max, the display can be hard to read if there is glare
* trying to skip to the start of the current track is tricky - back skips to the previous track, then forward goes to where I left off on the other one - hard to get back to the start of the current track
