Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of SanDisk SDDR-103 MobileMate SD+ 5-in-1 Mobile Reader (SD/ MiniSD/ MMC/ RS-MMC/ TransFlash, Retail Package)Customer Review: Good multi storage card solution but a bit bulky Summary: 4 Stars
I bought this because I have the standard somewhat problematic mixture of SD and Micro SD cards. My cell phone uses the micro, my camera uses the SD, and I travel a lot. Unfortunately microSD cards are a bit expensive per bit compared to SD cards and, for a camera, you want the speed of the SD card. Plus I'm basically cheap so I want the most memory for the buck for my camera and the SD card provides that. So, given the array of memory solutions, this was a good accessory to have. However it is a bit large (maybe can't be helped for the flexibility) and makes it difficult to use the other laptop USB port when this is plugged in. Never the less, good overall flexible solution that seems to run at USB2 speeds(though I haven't measured it of course but seems equivalent to any other USB2 memory card/thumd drive I have).
Customer Review: Work, but Tricky to Take out microSD Summary: 4 Stars
Working fine with my SD and microSD on Win XP SP2 box.
However, you've to push microSD almost completely inside this reader. Once you put in microSD, it's quite tricky to take it out because microSD is so small and your finger barely can hold on to it to pull it back out. I had to do so as gently as possible since I was worried using extra strength might break it. It took me quite a while to get it out eventually.
Hence, as for easy-of-use with microSD, especially if you plan to put in and take out your microSD frequently with this reader, it doesn't get my highest recommendation. Nevertheless, it works fine for SD though.
I don't have cards of other formats to test it, but I naturally assume they would work fine too.
Customer Review: Tight SD Slot and Shaky USB Connection Summary: 2 Stars
I bought the SanDisk MobileMate SD+ to use with a MicroSD card I purchased at the same time. I chose the MobileMate SD+ because it had a lot of comments (100+)... most of which were positive. I haven't used it to read the MicroSD card yet. However, I did try it with some SD cards. I found two issues with the MobileMate SD+. (1) The SD slot is very tight. The contacts on the SD cards were scratched after being inserted and removed from the reader. I am concerned that frequent use will ruin the SD contacts. (2) The USB connection (I'm not sure if it is the reader's socket or the short USB cable it came with) seemms flaky. I have to wiggle it a bit to get it to work (have the second light come on indicating card detection).
Customer Review: Works well Summary: 4 Stars
This thing works great. It reads and writes quickly to SD cards. I had some trouble getting a Windows XP and Mac OS X computers to write to my SD card (kept complaining about being write-protected), but this was resolved by inserting the SD card not quite all the way. I have not tried the MobileMate with a Multimedia card. My major complaint is that the cover for the card slots is not permanently attached. If one attempts to swing it out of the way to insert a card, it falls off. A drop of Super Glue was a quick and permantent fix. Another complaint is that this tiny thing is power hungry. It must be attached directly into a computer's USB port. It over powers any USB hub - even the USB hub in a Mac keyboard.
Customer Review: Does the job, but very awkard design Summary: 3 Stars
It definitely gets the job done, and SanDisk has been a good company in my experience.
The way you insert cards is irritating--the SD slot is a *tight* squeeze and even if you put it in right-side-up it feels wrong; for a moment I was confused and almost took the card out and put it in the wrong way. In addition, the microSD slot faces OPPOSITE of the SD card slot*, which is a great way to add more confusion for the user.
I guess I don't have any REAL complaints. I've bought/used more elegant card adapters before, and I'll forever worry that one day I'll be careless and insert the SD card backwards.
* Don't put two cards in at the same time (as per the directions)
