Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of SanDisk ImageMate 12-in-1 USB 2.0 Flash Memory Card Reader SDDR-89-A15

Customer Review: ahhhh...no damn drivers needed finally
Summary: 5 Stars

I've been searching for a USB 2.0 flash card reader that doesn't need stupid drivers (I'm a bit obsessive about keeping my system clean) for the longest time and have finally found it!

When plugged in, the device shows up as 4 separate drives. Transfers are painless and you can also transfer between multiple flash card formats w/o copying to your hard drive first (though I haven't had a need to do this).

If you do install the drivers, there's a button on the reader that transfers files automatically. I haven't installed the software for this, so I don't know where the files go :-)

Thanks, Sandisk! Shame on Dazzle for making their 8-in-1 reader require drivers; my old USB1.1 Dazzle didn't need drivers so I thought their new USB2.0 reader was safe to buy. Tried the Lexar reader next and had the same problem. But now I'm happy again...

Customer Review: Great Product
Summary: 5 Stars

This is an external memory device that can be used for all kinds of media. Realize though that this is a card reader, not a replacement for your camera transfer software, although it can certainly be used to move your camera's files. Only 4 slots (different media) types can be used simultaneously, but who needs more than one or two? It is great to just plug in the USB connection and have it work without installing drivers. I originally bought this to read various cards from my digital cameras and audio device. I now bought a 2 gig card and use it to backup critical files from my hard drive. The only thing I don't like about it is that it tends to fall over - maybe the base should be bigger, or maybe I should put it where I won't bump into it! No problems after several years of use, unlike my Dazzle reader which fried within a year or two. This is a good product.

Customer Review: Doesn't work at all for me
Summary: 1 Stars

I've been trying for weeks to get it to reliably read my SD cards. I've got two different brands of cards (one SanDisk, one Corsair) and I tried 3 different computers, 2 PCs and a Mac, and pictures read from the card come back corrupted a good fraction of the time, even though they are good on the card (other card readers will see them). I got a replacement unit from SanDisk and it had *exactly* the same problem. Even just copying pictures to the card from my PC and then back onto the PC, results in corrupt images. The only constant in all of this the fact that the images were originally shot with the same camera (a Pentax) but it's hard to imagine that the camera that created the JPEG files could be a reason for the corruption.

Online tech support tries to be helpful and they are prompt, but can't do anything but keep sending me replacement units.

Customer Review: Bloated Software; Useless Drivers
Summary: 1 Stars

This card reader requires a 30MB TransferMate application to access the individual slots. Why can't this USB hub run in Plug-And-Play mode?

I got this card reader to work once, then I unplugged it and tucked it away until I needed it again. When I went to plug it in later, I was told the driver failed to load because Windows was unable to locate the software for it. That is bad!

My PC is a DELL D820 laptop (WinXP Pro, 1GB RAM, 100GB HDD) that I use for work as a software developer, and being a software developer, I feel pretty knowledgable with computers.

This device should not be that hard to use!

I've tried uninstalling everything, rebooting my PC, then reinstalling the software, but I can't get it to run the card reader any more.

It looks pretty, but I recommend you find something simpler.

Customer Review: High quality, multi-format, flash card reader
Summary: 5 Stars

The product is well made and works great. There are four slots for different types of Flash cards - see the product description for exact details. I purchased this item because it supports the new SDHC flash card used by my camera.

The reader has a yellow power light indicating it is connected to an active USB port. It has 4 green leds; one for each slot indicating data activity on a given card slot. Each slot shows up on explorer as a separate removable drive. The unit comes with software that helps a novice copy files from a newly inserted card on/off it to the PC hard drive.

The unit comes with a stand that allows the reader to be placed vertically on a desktop. It also comes with a 6 inch cord that allows it to be used without the stand and plug into a standard USB Type A port. The unit itself uses a mini-USB port.
