Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of SanDisk Cruzer Titanium 4 GB USB 2.0 Flash Drive SDCZ7-4096-A10Customer Review: Reassurance plus retractibility. Summary: 5 Stars
I went from a SanDisk 250MB flash drive to a 500MB Titanium to a 1 GB Titanium (missed the 2 GB) to this 4 GB Titanium. Each time the cost has been less and the speed greater. Sure, you can pick up a "generic" 2 GB flash drive from Walgreen's for 20 bucks, but spending a little extra for a SanDisk is worth it if only for peace of mind. Moreover, the Titanium many be larger and have the same storage capacity as Sandisk's less expensive Mini-Cruzer, but its retractable feature saves enough misplaced covers to be worth the premium. For that matter, the added size makes the drive itself harder to miss. And unlike, say, a 60GB Western Digital drive, the Titanium doesn't have a cable with one of those delicate and tiny 1394 pin connectors between the storage device and the computer. It plugs directly into a computer's USB port and, unlike my frustrating WD drive, never fails to appear on my computer's desktop.
Customer Review: ...and it's not heavy enough to use as a paperweight. Summary: 1 Stars
i bought this item because its effulgent no-costs-barred exterior speaks of quality, and i believed it. the U3 software was a nuisance to get rid of (i'm a mac user, and it required that i hunt down a pc-using friend), but i managed. i still have un-deletable crap on the disk, though...apparently i don't have the "privileges" required! and within weeks, the hardware started malfunctioning: once mounted, it was impossible to unmount the disk except by restarting my computer and yanking the cruzer out of the usb port while the system was down. if the computer goes to sleep with the stick in it, all bets are off; click on the icon and you get the spinning wheel of death that heralds whinces and pangs for mac users everywhere. it's actually crashed my (otherwise bulletproof) G4 no fewer than 5 times. my advice to mac users: get a kingston--they're cheaper, and there's no obnoxious self-perpetuating software bundle.
Customer Review: Outstanding portable data device Summary: 5 Stars
The 4GB Cruzer Titanium (U3) is extremely well made and very fast. I was able to backup ~ 900MB of data from my employer's ThinkPad to it in a little over 5 minutes. The USB connector extends and retracts easily, and eliminates any concerns about lost caps. I've also owned a 512MB Cruzer Titanium for 3 years and it has functioned very well, although it is noticeably slower than the 4GB device, no doubt due to the 512MB's USB 1.1 connector.
I purchased the device primarily for use in conjunction with my work and highly recommend it for that purpose.
My one complaint about the 4GB Cruzer Titanium is that the U3 software doesn't yet work with Windows Vista. I contacted Sandisk about this and was told that a Vista compatible version would be available sometime in Q3'07, so hopefully the incompatibility is temporary. Overall, though, this is the best USB device on the market today.
Customer Review: Buyer Beware Summary: 1 Stars
I've owned two of these now--trust me, they aren't well made and you can't count on it working. The software that comes on these is made in France, by a company that doesn't offer support or even have a phone number. I learned this the hard way, after my device froze and then somehow erased my password which resulted in being locked out--with no ability to recover the files or password. Don't buy these things--they aren't built well. If you do, never count on it--always make sure your files are backed up somewhere else. Also, I wouldn't recommend using it for business related purposes. Mine crashed on a way to do a company presentation for a potential client. Sandisk has very poor customer support--you will talk to India and they will offer no help. They even tried to get me to buy a password recovery program to solve the problem--which solved nothing. The software is very flawed. Beware!
Customer Review: Super 4GB Flash Drive Summary: 4 Stars
I would give this 5 stars, but the U3 application adds another layer of complexity that I was not expecting and it pissed me off trying to remove it, only to have it re-load the application upon the next insertion.
I have since learned to use the U3 stuff and I'm glad I couldn't remove it easily. With U3 you can use the same applications on any compatible computer, without having to re-load your personal settings (i.e. bookmarks, favorites, passwords, web receipts, cookies, etc.)
I'd certainly buy another one of these any day, especially after someone told me that it can hold 2,000LBs of pressure before snapping off ... so you're more likely to break the USB port on your computer than lose data.
The 4GB gives you enough room to almost store a full DVD iso image or a few CD images.
Plus, it's very shiny and the switchblade connector is slick.
