Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of SanDisk Cruzer Titanium 4 GB USB 2.0 Flash Drive SDCZ7-4096-A10Customer Review: Does What I Wanted and a Pleasant Surprise Summary: 5 Stars
I purchased three SanDisk 4 GB Cruser USB Micros with U3 in Fall, 2008 solely for data storage (extra backup and transport). Based on reviews I had read, I expected to have to go to SanDisk's website to figure out how to remove the U3. As a result, I put off using the Crusers until now (June 2009). When I plugged the first one in to my XP equipped desktop computer, a message came up inviting me to either launch or delete the U3. It also advised that I could reinstate the U3 whenever I wished, using a small executable that remained on the drive. The delete process took only a few seconds and, subsequently I was able to store close to 4 GB of various files in about 15-20 minutes. The process went smoothly and a few tests of "recoveries" were uneventful. Repetition of this same process for the other two drives also went smoothly. In short, I have three very satisfactory data storage devices, easily configured to avoid the bells and whistles, but easily reconfigurable in case I want to use features such as the password protection.
Customer Review: Great, but dump the U3 software immediately! Summary: 3 Stars
I use a Mac 90% of the time. Transferring files between Macs is no problem. This drive is fully compatible with OS X.
However, the U3 software is a pain when you use this disk on a Windows machine. Other reviewers here have used it and have more technical explanations for either liking it or hating it. I disliked it as the U3 software just makes using it on a PC confusing, causing Windows to think it loaded several drives simultaneously. The U3 software gives extraneous error messages when you plug and unplug the drive using the Windows to unplug hardware rather than the U3 software. I eventually removed the software as it is simply poorly designed software that I didn't ask for. To make it difficult to uninstall, you have to download more software from U3 to remove it from the drive -- simply trashing the files does nothing as it reinstalls itself!
Despite the sturdy construction of this drive, I'm not inclined to purchase additional SanDisk products until they stop the preinstallation of the U3 software.
Customer Review: Whoa Price un-Break Summary: 5 Stars
Just FYI, I bought this for $45 from an Amazon affiliate. It works quite well, but I've never seen it break 10MB/sec on reads or writes. It feels very tough, I've only had it a few weeks so it hasn't been through a washer or some rain yet. The latency (moving lots of small files) is decent, 1000x faster than my Lexar Firefly. If you're moving lots of 2-4k files expect to be move only at 300KB/s or so. However, running an application and reading/writing to the device is pretty decent as well 8MB/sec reads while running firefox, pretty impressive!
The U3 software is very easily removed, it's some nice software but they are just way too limited in available apps. Here's what I did, downloaded PortableApps or if you are paranoid try out TrueCrypt, it works very well with AutoStart. Another very nice app is Roboform. The U3 software integrates with the USB device a little better than these various apps, but it costs a lot more in disk usage and cost of having to buy all kinds of software.
Customer Review: cheap and effective; also strong Summary: 5 Stars
A few years ago i went to a local grocery store I'm sure we all are familiar with and bought a Sandisk 2GB black plastic flash drive for about $30.00. Recently i bought this and wow is it a deal.
* You get 4Gb of memory
* Has an ultra strong case around the flash drive so it is difficult to break by applying force to it
* Low price a little over half the price i paid for half as much memory
* Has a very useful U3 utility program which utilizes the use of multiple programs that are sure to help you
The only con may be the U3 program as i have heard that you cannot remove it.
Overall a great product with currently no drawbacks If you want memory i recommend the plastic version sold here on amazon.com, but if you want decent memory and durability i recommend this one.
If you want memory i still recommend you pay a little extra and get this version as it will last much longer and pay for itself in the long run
Customer Review: Apple Mac OS X 10.1.2+ --- Erase U3, Reformat, Name --- Good to Go Summary: 5 Stars
I don't own the 4 GB. I own the 2 GB which identical except for capacity.
My review is for Apple OS X 10.1.2+ users who may want one. SanDisk's website and most sellers, say it is only for Windows. I emailed SanDisk's technical staff. You can use it on OS X 10.1.2+, but you can't use the U3 programs. Incidentally, many PC users neither want nor use U3 either.
You need a PC friend to download the little program from the SanDisk website that deletes U3 on your SanDisk in his USB port. Then, use your Mac's Disk Utility to Erase Free Space, Name and Volume Format in Mac OS Extended (journaled) for full storage capacity. Well worth the effort. The SanDisk is good looking, functional and nearly bulletproof. It's MUCH easier than it sounds. Just go step by step.
I did this and it works beautifully with my iMac G4 running OS X 10.4.11!
If you have a new Intel Mac, you don't even need a PC friend.
