Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of SanDisk Cruzer Titanium 4 GB USB 2.0 Flash Drive SDCZ7-4096-A10

Customer Review: The comfort of secure data
Summary: 4 Stars

I bought the cruzer Titanium because my last USB thumb drive split the plastic case open and dumped the 8gig electronic core somewhere on the Road in Southern Colorado.

I keep my thumb drive on my key chain, and I ride a motorcycle. At the end of a recent trip, I reached down to take my keys out of the bike and noticed that the only thing remaining was the plastic case. It had popped apart just enough to let the guts fall out. I assume the swinging and banging against the bike was enough to do this.

Several reviews of the titanium case mentioned running over the case multiple times, and even gouging out a chunk of asphalt after wedging the case sideways under a tire.

It is just a bit heavier than a plastic cruzer, but I think the weight is well worth it.

I've also come to like the U3 software options, and especially the hardware supported password security.

I even added some software that if the drive gets lost, and someone finds and plugs it into their computer, it will report it's IP address and I can possibly get it back.

Speed seems average, and the 4gb is not as much as my old 8gb, but I'm content with knowing my data is much more secure.

Customer Review: Physically tough; slow writes and random malfunctions.
Summary: 2 Stars

The Ti shell is really why I bought it, and why I gave it an extra star. My case is scratched up from being dropped, stepped on, and skipped across the floor, but it still works and it's outlasted two plastic ones. When a plastic case cracks the board usually goes with it.

The slow writes and malfunction's in Windows are why I've stopped using it much. 17mbps read speed is good for most uses, but the 1mbps sequential write speed is pretty slow when backing up a gig or two of data. Forget about the 0.1-0.2mbps random write speed when the drive gets a little fragmented. When I bought it last year the 4Gb was pushing technology and the 2Gb performed better. Things may be better with the 4Gb units now shipping.

The biggest issue is that it will randomly "malfunction" in Windows--XP or Vista, at work or at home. The light goes off and the device disappears and I can't get it back.

Fortunately I've never had a problem under Linux. And, after using it in Linux exclusively for about a week it'll again work in Windows. Maybe this is due to the ESD issue someone else mentioned. Who knows.

Customer Review: Roomy and Sturdy
Summary: 5 Stars

I give lectures and briefings and a lot of my material is proprietary, so I got this drive for its security features and its near indestructability.

A nice bonus is the U3 software which lets me plug into a laptop or desktop and load up a Firefox web browser or Thunderbird email software. Opera web browser and email software is also an option. Instant connection to my personal email accounts! And no worried about any of my personal information being left on the host computer.

Another bonus is being able to use Open Office for word processing, spreadsheets, and even presentations. All stored on the thumbdrive.

I also have Syncback (both the laptop version and portable version) for instant synching of the information between the thumbdrive and my home computer.

Probably best of all, though not specific to this drive, is that I've been able to run other software off it as well, like my Eudora email program. Lots of things can be run off of a thumbdrive. With these large capacities, like the 4GB of this one, the sky is almost the limit!

Customer Review: Excellent Drive
Summary: 5 Stars

When I first picked up this flash drive, 4GB was about the most you could buy at a reasonable price. These days, of course, you can pick up a flash drive 32GB or more. However, in this day and age, cloud computing is starting to reign superior to any form of physical storage, so flash drives, themselves, are starting to become worthless.

However, you will still occasionally have a need for physical media, and 4GB is way more than enough for any flash drive, so unless you need to physically transfer some REALLY large files, I'd strongly suggest picking this drive up.

What I love the most about this flash drive is the titanium case. Sure, it's totally unnecessary unless you're expecting to have the drive smacked with a baseball bat several times, but it feels solid in your hands, which I personally enjoy compared to other drives with plastic cases that just feel cheap and flimsy.

I purchased this product well over a year ago and continue to find uses for it to this day, so it's definitely worth the money you spend on it.

Customer Review: Excellent Flash Drive
Summary: 5 Stars

Like the other reviews, I agree that the only downside to this drive is that the U3 software does not work with Vista...but San Disk said it should have the compatability problems worked out by te fall. I didn't purchase this drive for the U3 software. I purchased the drive for the storage, the price, and the design.

I own the San Disk Cruzer Micro 1 GB, and I never felt safe having it on my keys because the plastic is a bit flimsy. The Titanium San Disk Cruzer is well built and I do not worry about it being on my key chain. I paid less than $50 on this drive, including shipping, and it looks like that was a steal because I cannot find that price any more.

I tested it recently to see what type of transfer speeds I would get and I was impressed with the results. I transferred 3.2 GB of MP3 files from my laptop (running Vista) to the drive in 7 mins and 30 sec. I then transferred the MP3s from the drive to another laptop (running XP) in about 6 mins and 30 sec.

All in all I am very pleased with this device.
